The primary reason is\nhistorical — Languages like Python and R have historically been popular in the bioinformatics community due to their\nease of use, extensive libraries, and strong community support. Many existing bioinformatics tools and workflows are\nalready written in these languages, making it easier for new projects to build on top of existing solutions.\n\nHowever, Go's simplicity, performance, and concurrency make it a strong fit for compute-heavy pipelines and portable command-\nline tools. This list curates Go-based bioinformatics software that is actively maintained and useful in practice.\n\nSee [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) for curation and audit policy, and [ARCHIVED.md](ARCHIVED.md) for inactive\nprojects. Contributions are welcome via pull requests or issues.\n\nSee also [awesome-biology](https://github.com/raivivek/awesome-biology) and\n[Awesome-Bioinformatics](https://github.com/danielecook/Awesome-Bioinformatics).\n\n## Table of Contents\n\n- [Awesome Bioinformatics Software in Go](#awesome-bioinformatics-software-in-go)\n - [Table of Contents](#table-of-contents)\n - [Workflow and Pipeline Management](#workflow-and-pipeline-management)\n - [General Bioinformatics Libraries](#general-bioinformatics-libraries)\n - [Proteomics and Genomics Analysis](#proteomics-and-genomics-analysis)\n - [Sequence Analysis and Manipulation](#sequence-analysis-and-manipulation)\n - [Phylogenetics and Alignments](#phylogenetics-and-alignments)\n - [Variant Analysis and Manipulation](#variant-analysis-and-manipulation)\n - [Data Manipulation and Querying](#data-manipulation-and-querying)\n - [DICOM Parsing](#dicom-parsing)\n - [Name and Taxonomy Analysis](#name-and-taxonomy-analysis)\n - [Biochemistry](#biochemistry)\n - [Archived Projects](#archived-projects)\n - [License](#license)\n\n## Workflow and Pipeline Management\n\n- [SciPipe](https://github.com/scipipe/scipipe) — Workflow library embedded in the Go programming language,\nfocusing on complex workflow constructs, compiling to a single binary, and providing powerful file naming and\ncomprehensive audit reports for every output.\n[ [Lampa et al., 2019](https://doi.org/10.1093/gigascience/giz044) | [web](https://scipipe.org/) ]\n- [Reflow](https://github.com/grailbio/reflow) — A language and runtime for distributed, incremental\ndata processing in the cloud\n\n## General Bioinformatics Libraries\n\n- [bíogo](https://github.com/biogo/biogo) — Bioinformatics library for Go.\n[ [Kortschak et al., 2017](https://doi.org/10.21105/joss.00167) ]\n- [Gonetics](https://github.com/pbenner/gonetics) — Go bioinformatics library.\n- [Gonomics](https://github.com/vertgenlab/gonomics) — Toolkit and Go library for genomics and population genetics.\n[ [Au et al., 2023](https://doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btad516) ]\n- [Grail Bioinformatics tools](https://github.com/grailbio/bio) — Bioinformatic infrastructure libraries.\n\n## Proteomics and Genomics Analysis\n\n- [Philosopher](https://github.com/Nesvilab/philosopher) — PeptideProphet, PTMProphet, ProteinProphet, iProphet, Abacus,\nand FDR filtering.\n[ [da Veiga Leprevost et al., 2020](https://doi.org/10.1038/s41592-020-0912-y) ]\n- [samql](https://github.com/maragkakislab/samql) — SQL-like query language for the SAM/BAM file format.\n[ [Lee and Maragkakis, 2021](https://doi.org/10.1186/s12859-021-04390-3) ]\n\n## Sequence Analysis and Manipulation\n\n- [SeqKit](https://github.com/shenwei356/seqkit) — Cross-platform and ultrafast toolkit for FASTA/Q file manipulation.\n[ [Shen et al., 2016](https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0163962) ]\n- [KMCP](https://github.com/shenwei356/kmcp) — Accurate metagenomic profiling and fast large-scale sequence/genome\nsearching.\n[ [Shen et al., 2022](https://doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btac845) ]\n- [bio](https://github.com/shenwei356/bio) — Lightweight and high-performance bioinformatics package in Golang.\n- [unikmer](https://github.com/shenwei356/unikmer) — A versatile toolkit for k-mers with taxonomic information.\n- [bwt](https://github.com/shenwei356/bwt) — Burrows-Wheeler Transform and FM-index in Golang.\n- [gTaxon](https://github.com/shenwei356/gtaxon) — Fast, cross-platform NCBI taxonomy query tool with CLI and REST API;\nsupports gi2taxid, taxid2taxon, name2taxid, and LCA.\n- [Gotranseq](https://github.com/feliixx/gotranseq) — Translate nucleic acid sequences to peptide sequences (like\nEMBOSS transeq).\n- [gofasta](https://github.com/virus-evolution/gofasta) — Command-line utilities for genomic epidemiology.\n[ [Jackson, 2022](https://doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btac424) ]\n- [spexs2](https://github.com/egonelbre/spexs2) — An exhaustive sequence pattern search tool.\n[ [Rahni et al., 2022](https://doi.org/10.1038/s43856-022-00114-7) ]\n\n## Phylogenetics and Alignments\n\n- [gotree](https://github.com/evolbioinfo/gotree) — Command-line tools and API to manipulate phylogenetic trees.\n[ [Lemoine and Gascuel, 2021](https://doi.org/10.1093/nargab/lqab075) ]\n- [goalign](https://github.com/evolbioinfo/goalign) — Command-line tools and API to manipulate multiple sequence\nalignments.
