It can be run on the OS console,\nin xterm and other terminal emulators.\n\nGNU Midnight Commander allows you to manage files while making the most of\nyour screen and giving you a clear representation of the filesystem, yet\nit's simple enough to be run over a telnet or ssh session.\n\nGNU Midnight Commander is released under the GNU General Public\nLicense version 3 or any later version.  A copy of the file is\nincluded with this distribution package.\n\n\nDependencies\n------------\n\nPlease read the file INSTALL for installation instructions\nand full list of dependencies.\n\n\nFeatures\n--------\n\nGNU Midnight Commander was conceived as a free clone of John Socha's\nNorton Commander (TM).  It also takes the best from more recent software\nwith similar interfaces.  GNU Midnight Commander comes with mouse support\non xterm and optionally on the Linux console.\n\nSome features are specific to the POSIX environment MC runs on, some are\nfamiliar to the users of similar software for other operating systems.\nThe features include:\n\n\t* Built in Virtual File System: manipulate remote file systems\n          through the FTP and SFTP protocols or over secure shell, browse\n          contents of tar, ar, rpm, zip, cpio, lha and rar archives just\n\t  like local files.\n\n\t* Almost all operations work with the virtual file system,\n\t  enabling you to do complex tasks, like viewing files in\n\t  archives on an FTP server.\n\n\t* Mouse support on most terminal emulators for X Window System\n\t  as well as on the Linux console.\n\n\t* Learn Keys: GNU Midnight Commander may be configured at run\n\t  time to support any kind of input keys for a given terminal,\n\t  making its operation possible even on most weird terminals.\n\n\t* Text and hex editors are available for you to use (hex editor\n\t  is a part of the viewer).\n\n\t* Hotlist allows you to keep a list of common visited locations,\n\t  including remote sites and directories inside archives.\n\n\t* Command completion: By pressing Alt-Tab in any place where a\n\t  filename or an executable are expected, GNU Midnight Commander\n\t  will complete the name for you.  If you press Alt-Tab for the\n\t  second time, you get a list box with all possible completions.\n\n\t* Subshell support: Run your commands by a real shell\n\t  interpreter.  GNU Midnight Commander interacts with bash,\n\t  tcsh and zsh to provide you with all of the facilities\n\t  available in your preferred shell.\n\n\t* Find file command can search for the file contents.\n\n\t* Background operations allow you to copy or move files from\n\t  any virtual file system while you do other tasks (i.e., you\n\t  can do background FTP copies).\n\n\t* FTP proxy is supported.\n\n\t* Linux file recovery: If you are using Linux, you can recover\n\t  deleted files from an ext2 or ext3 partition with the undelete\n\t  file system.  This is a low level file recovery function that\n\t  can recover files deleted by any program on Linux.\n\n\t* External panelization: You can run any arbitrary external\n\t  command and GNU Midnight Commander will display the output\n\t  generated as a file listing that can be manipulated as a\n\t  regular directory.\n\n\t* Emacs-like key bindings are used in all widgets.\n\n\t* Context dependent actions (open, view, edit) are available.\n\n\t* The built-in file viewer, together with the context dependent\n\t  actions is used to format man pages on the fly, coloring mail\n\t  messages and more.\n\n\t* The built-in editor supports syntax highlighting and external\n\t  actions, such as spell checking and formatting.\n\n\nMini-documentation\n------------------\n\nThese are hints for the text mode edition:\n\n* Use the F-Keys for invoking the commands in the function key bar.\n  If your terminal doesn't support F-keys, you can use the \u003cESC digit\u003e\n  sequence to invoke the corresponding F-digit key.\n\n* Tab changes the current panel.\n\n* All input lines have emacs-like key-bindings (command history is\n  accessed through the M-p and M-n keys).\n\n* The panels accept C-n, C-p for browsing the panel (like in Emacs).\n\n* M-Enter copies the currently selected file name to the input line.\n\n* M-Tab completes the current word (or tries to).\n\n* The Virtual File System is a cute addition to the project, you may\n  browse in tar and compressed tar files as well as browsing remote\n  machines with the shell file system.\n\n* Please read the manual page.\n\nYou can access the whole documentation online with the F1 key,\nalthough it's not as nice as the groff printed manual page :-)\n\n\nWhere to get more information\n-----------------------------\n\nThere is a webpage for GNU Midnight Commander at\n\n* https://midnight-commander.org\n\nThis page also has current information about mailing lists and some\nuseful advices how to report bugs.\n\nYou can download the latest version of GNU Midnight Commander from\n\n* https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/midnightcommander/\n\nReporting problems\n------------------\n\nYou can report bugs on our site:\n\nhttps://github.com/MidnightCommander/mc/issues\n\nAlso you can use mc mailing lists to discuss problems.\n\nThere are two mailing lists:\n\n  - mc@lists.midnight-commander.org\n  - mc-devel@lists.midnight-commander.org\n\nUse mc-devel@ if you are prepared for a more technical discussion\nwith the developers of the package, otherwise use mc@.\n\nInclude the output of \"mc --version\", the operating system and the\ndistribution (if applicable) you are using, the compiler and the\nconfigure flags used to compile the program (if you know them).\n\nIf the program crashed and produced a core dump, please provide a\nstack trace of the program.\n\nYou can do this by running gdb like this:\n\ngdb mc core\n(gdb) where\n","funding_links":[],"categories":["Files and Directories","C","Applications","Table of Contents","Packages","File Managers"],"sub_categories":["File Managers","File Manager","CLI Tools","System tools"],"project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2FMidnightCommander%2Fmc","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2FMidnightCommander%2Fmc","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2FMidnightCommander%2Fmc/lists"}
