Recommendation: Use [Amplify](https://aws-amplify.github.io/) clients to connect to AppSync\n\nFor front-end web and mobile development, we recommend using the [Amplify](https://aws-amplify.github.io/) clients which are optimized to connect to the AppSync backend.\n\n- For DynamoDB data sources, use the [DataStore](https://docs.amplify.aws/lib/datastore/getting-started/q/platform/android/) category in the Amplify client. It provides the best developer experience and built-in conflict detection and resolution.\n- For non-DynamoDB data sources in scenarios where you have no offline requirements, use the [API (GraphQL)](https://docs.amplify.aws/lib/graphqlapi/getting-started/q/platform/android/) category in the Amplify client.\n\n## AWS AppSync SDK for Android\n[![GitHub release](https://img.shields.io/github/release/awslabs/aws-mobile-appsync-sdk-android.svg)](https://github.com/awslabs/aws-mobile-appsync-sdk-android/releases)\n[![Maven Central](https://img.shields.io/maven-central/v/com.amazonaws/aws-android-sdk-appsync.svg)]()\n[![Build Status](https://app.travis-ci.com/awslabs/aws-mobile-appsync-sdk-android.svg?branch=main)](https://app.travis-ci.com/awslabs/aws-mobile-appsync-sdk-android)\n\nThe AWS AppSync SDK for Android enables you to access your AWS AppSync backend and perform operations like queries, mutations, and subscription. The SDK also includes support for offline operations. This SDK is derrived from the Apollo project found [here](https://github.com/apollographql/apollo-android). Please log questions for this client SDK in this repo and questions for the AppSync service in the [official AWS AppSync forum](https://forums.aws.amazon.com/forum.jspa?forumID=280\u0026start=0).\n\n## Platform Support\n\nAWS AppSync SDK for Android supports Android API level 21 (Android 5.0) and above.\n\n## Samples\n\n1. A sample app using the events sample schema can be found here: https://github.com/aws-samples/aws-mobile-appsync-events-starter-android\n\nStep by step documentation can be found here: https://aws-amplify.github.io/docs/android/api\n\n## Setup\n\n### Gradle setup\n\n#### Project's `build.gradle`\n\nIn the project's `build.gradle`, add a dependency to the `dependencies` inside the `buildscript` block:\n\n```groovy\nclasspath 'com.amazonaws:aws-android-sdk-appsync-gradle-plugin:3.4.1'\n```\n\nAlso, add the maven plugins repository to your `repositories`.\n\nDo this for the `repositories` block under `buildscript`:\n\n```groovy\nbuildscript {\n    repositories {\n        // Add this maven block.\n        maven {\n            url \"https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/\"\n        }\n        google()\n        mavenCentral()\n    }\n}\n```\n\nAnd also under `allprojects`, too:\n\n```groovy\nallprojects {\n    repositories {\n        // Add this maven block.\n        maven {\n            url \"https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/\"\n        }\n        google()\n        mavenCentral()\n    }\n}\n```\n\n**Sample project's `build.gradle`**\n\n```groovy\n// Top-level build file where you can add configuration options common to all sub-projects/modules.\nbuildscript {\n    repositories {\n        maven {\n            url \"https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/\"\n        }\n        google()\n        mavenCentral()\n    }\n\n    dependencies {\n        classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:3.5.3'\n        classpath 'com.amazonaws:aws-android-sdk-appsync-gradle-plugin:3.4.1'\n    }\n}\n\nallprojects {\n    repositories {\n        maven {\n            url \"https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/\"\n        }\n        google()\n        mavenCentral()\n    }\n}\n\n... other stuff ...\n```\n\n#### App's `build.gradle`\n\nIn the app's `build.gradle`, add the following plugin:\n\n```groovy\napply plugin: 'com.amazonaws.appsync'\n```\n\nAdd the following dependency:\n\n```groovy\nimplementation 'com.amazonaws:aws-android-sdk-appsync:3.4.1'\n```\n\n**Sample app's `build.gradle`**\n\n```groovy\napply plugin: 'com.android.application'\napply plugin: 'com.amazonaws.appsync'\n\nandroid {\n    // Typical items\n}\n\ndependencies {\n    // Typical dependencies\n    implementation 'com.amazonaws:aws-android-sdk-appsync:3.4.1'\n}\n```\n\n### App's `AndroidManifest.xml`\n\nTo determine if the device is offline, add permissions to access the network state:\n\n```xml\n\u003cuses-permission android:name=\"android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE\" /\u003e\n```\n\n## Code generation\n\nTo interact with AppSync, your client needs to define GraphQL queries and mutations.\n\nFor example, create a file named `./app/src/main/graphql/com/amazonaws/demo/posts/posts.graphql`:\n\n```graphql\nquery GetPost($id:ID!) {\n    getPost(id:$id) {\n        id\n        title\n        author\n        content\n        url\n        version\n    }\n}\n\nmutation AddPost($id: ID!, $author: String!, $title: String, $content: String, $url: String, $ups: Int!, $downs: Int!, $expectedVersion: Int!) {\n    putPost(id: $id, author: $author, title: $title, content: $content, url: $url, ups: $ups, downs: $downs, version: $expectedVersion) {\n        id\n        title\n        author\n        url\n        content\n    }\n}\n```\n\nNext, fetch the `schema.json` file from the AppSync console and place it alongside the `posts.graphql` file:\n```console\n./app/src/main/graphql/com/amazonaws/demo/posts/schema.json\n```\n\nNow build the project and the generated source files will be available to\nuse within the app. They will not show up in your source directory, but\nare added in the build path.\n\n## Create a client\n\n### Configuration via code\n\n```java\nAWSAppSyncClient client = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .apiKey(new BasicAPIKeyAuthProvider(Constants.APPSYNC_API_KEY)) // API Key based authorization\n    .region(Constants.APPSYNC_REGION)\n    .serverUrl(Constants.APPSYNC_API_URL)\n    .build();\n```\n\n### Configuration via a config file\n\nAlternatively, you can use the `awsconfiguration.json` file to supply the configuration information required to create a `AWSAppSyncClient` object.\n\nCreate a file named `awsconfiguration.json` under your app's `res/raw` directory.\n\n```json\n{\n    \"AppSync\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\",\n            \"ApiKey\": \"YOUR-API-KEY\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"API_KEY\"\n        }\n    }\n}\n```\n\nThe `AWSConfiguration` represents the configuration information present in `awsconfiguration.json` file. By default, the information under `Default` section will be used.\n\n```java\nAWSAppSyncClient client = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .awsConfiguration(new AWSConfiguration(context))\n    .build();\n```\n\nYou can override the `Default` configuration by using the `AWSConfiguration#setConfiguration()` method.\n\n```json\n{\n    \"AppSync\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\",\n            \"ApiKey\": \"YOUR-API-KEY\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"API_KEY\"\n        },\n        \"Custom\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-2\",\n            \"ApiKey\": \"YOUR-API-KEY\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"API_KEY\"\n        }\n   }\n}\n```\n\n```java\nAWSConfiguration awsConfig = new AWSConfiguration(context);\nawsConfig.setConfiguration(\"Custom\");\n\nAWSAppSyncClient client = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .awsConfiguration(awsConfig)\n    .build();\n```\n\n## Authentication Modes\n\nWhen making calls to AWS AppSync, there are several ways to authenticate those calls. API key authorization (**API_KEY**) is the simplest way to onboard. After onboarding, we recommend you use one of the other modes:\n\n 1. Amazon IAM (**AWS_IAM**)\n 2. Amazon Cognito UserPools (**AMAZON\\_COGNITO\\_USER_POOLS**)\n 3. Any OpenID Connect Provider (**OPENID_CONNECT**)\n\n### API Key\n\nFor authorization using the API key, update the `awsconfiguration.json` file and code snippet as follows:\n\n#### Configuration\n\nAdd the following snippet to your `awsconfiguration.json` file.\n\n```json\n{\n    \"AppSync\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\",\n            \"ApiKey\": \"YOUR-API-KEY\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"API_KEY\"\n        }\n    }\n}\n```\n\n#### Code\n\nIn order to use the information in the `Default` section from `awsconfiguration.json` file, add the following code:\n\n```java\nAWSAppSyncClient client = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .awsConfiguration(new AWSConfiguration(context))\n    .build();\n```\n\n### AWS IAM\n\nFor authorization using Amazon IAM credentials, using Amazon IAM or Amazon STS or Amazon Cognito, update the `awsconfiguration.json` file and code snippet as follows:\n\n#### Configuration\n\nAdd the following snippet to your `awsconfiguration.json` file.\n\n```json\n{\n    \"CredentialsProvider\": {\n        \"CognitoIdentity\": {\n            \"Default\": {\n                \"PoolId\": \"YOUR-COGNITO-IDENTITY-POOLID\",\n                \"Region\": \"us-east-1\"\n            }\n        }\n    },\n    \"AppSync\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"AWS_IAM\"\n       }\n    }\n}\n```\n\n#### Code\n\nAdd the following code to use the information in the `Default` section from `awsconfiguration.json` file.\n\n```java\nAWSConfiguration awsConfig = new AWSConfiguration(context);\n\nCognitoCachingCredentialsProvider credentialsProvider =\n    new CognitoCachingCredentialsProvider(context, awsConfig);\n\nAWSAppSyncClient client = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .awsConfiguration(awsConfig)\n    .credentialsProvider(credentialsProvider)\n    .build();\n```\n\n\n### Amazon Cognito UserPools\n\nFor authorization using the Amazon Cognito UserPools, update the `awsconfiguration.json` file and code snippet as follows:\n\n#### Configuration\n\nAdd the following snippet to your `awsconfiguration.json` file.\n\n```\n{\n    \"CognitoUserPool\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"PoolId\": \"POOL-ID\",\n            \"AppClientId\": \"APP-CLIENT-ID\",\n            \"AppClientSecret\": \"APP-CLIENT-SECRET\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\"\n        }\n    },\n    \"AppSync\": {\n        \"Default\": {\n            \"ApiUrl\": \"YOUR-GRAPHQL-ENDPOINT\",\n            \"Region\": \"us-east-1\",\n            \"AuthMode\": \"AMAZON_COGNITO_USER_POOLS\"\n        }\n    }\n}\n```\n\n#### Code\n\nAdd the following dependency to your app in order to use Amazon Cognito UserPools:\n\n```groovy\ndependencies {\n    implementation 'com.amazonaws:aws-android-sdk-cognitoidentityprovider:2.16.12'\n}\n```\n\nAdd the following code to use the information in the `Default` section from `awsconfiguration.json` file.\n\n```java\nAWSConfiguration awsConfig = new AWSConfiguration(context);\n\nCognitoUserPool cognitoUserPool = new CognitoUserPool(context, awsConfig);\nBasicCognitoUserPoolsAuthProvider basicCognitoUserPoolsAuthProvider =\n    new BasicCognitoUserPoolsAuthProvider(cognitoUserPool);\n\nAWSAppSyncClient awsAppSyncClient = AWSAppSyncClient.builder()\n    .context(context)\n    .awsConfiguration(awsConfig)\n    .cognitoUserPoolsAuthProvider(basicCognitoUserPoolsAuthProvider)\n    .build();\n```\n\n### OIDC (OpenID Connect)\n\nFor authorization using any OIDC (OpenID Connect) Identity Provider, update the `awsconfiguration.json` file and code snippet as follows:\n\n#### Configuration\n\nAdd the following snippet
