Open `chrome://extensions` in Google Chrome\n2. Enable `Developer mode`\n3. Click `Load unpacked`\n4. Select this repository's `ext/` directory\n\nChrome only:\n\n* This project is built and tested for Google Chrome\n* Brave and other Chromium browsers are not supported targets for this repo\n\n## How Transcription Works\n\n* The main app page is the primary workspace\n* Interim speech stays visible in the same textarea while speaking\n* Final speech is committed into the transcript\n* The transcript grows until a visual cap, then scrolls internally\n* The textarea auto-focuses on load and regains focus after the main transcript actions\n\n## Read Aloud\n\nSimple STT can read the transcript back using the browser speech-synthesis engine.\n\n* If text is selected, it reads the selection\n* If no text is selected, it can read from the cursor position\n* Restart jumps back to the beginning and starts again\n* Starting read-aloud stops active transcription so the app does not transcribe its own output\n\n## Active-Field Writing\n\nWhen `Write to active field` is enabled in the main app, final dictated text is also inserted into the currently focused editable field in the active tab.\n\nNotes:\n\n* This only applies to normal editable pages and fields\n* Restricted browser and internal pages are skipped quietly\n* Turning the toggle off keeps transcription local to Simple STT\n* The setting is persisted through the shared settings layer\n\n## Spoken Commands\n\nSimple STT replaces configured spoken phrases after recognition finalizes.\n\nDefault phrases:\n\n* `carriage return` =\u003e newline\n* `double carriage return` =\u003e blank line\n\nYou can change these in Settings.\n\n## Keyboard Shortcuts\n\nDefault transcription toggle:\n\n* `Alt+Shift+R`\n\nTranscript actions in the app page:\n\n* `Ctrl/Cmd+A` selects the transcript\n* `Ctrl/Cmd+C` copies the transcript\n* `Ctrl/Cmd+X` cuts the transcript\n\nThe transcription toggle hotkey is configurable in Settings.\n\nExpected hotkey format:\n\n* `Alt+Shift+R`\n* `Cmd+Shift+R`\n* `Ctrl+Alt+K`\n\nIf the saved value is blank or invalid, Simple STT falls back to the default.\n\n## Settings\n\nSettings currently support:\n\n* line break phrase\n* paragraph break phrase\n* transcription toggle hotkey\n* language\n* read-aloud voice\n\nThe live `Write to active field` mode toggle stays on the main app because it is intended as a working-mode control rather than a static preference.\n\n## Permissions\n\n* `activeTab`: lets the extension interact with the current tab when needed\n* `scripting`: used for focused-field insertion into editable pages\n* `storage`: stores settings such as command phrases and the hotkey\n* `tabs`: used for app and settings tab focusing and deduping\n\n## Limitations\n\n* Speech recognition depends on the browser's built-in speech recognition support\n* Behavior is intended for Google Chrome only\n* Active-field writing will not work on restricted browser and internal pages\n* Dictation quality and availability depend on the browser speech engine and microphone permissions\n\n## License\n\nMIT.
