Time-addressable Media Store API\n\nThis repository contains API definitions for a Time-addressable Media Store (TAMS) server, which can be used to store, query and access segmented media - distinct from files and streams, but sharing characteristics of both.\n\n## Overview\n\nTime-addressable media is defined by a timeline, with media elements placed upon it, building upon concepts familiar from IMF.\nMedia stored in TAMS are identified with UUIDs according to the scheme used in [AMWA NMOS IS-04](https://specs.amwa.tv/is-04/releases/v1.3.2/APIs/schemas/).\nOnce written, the media, and their association with the timeline, are immutable.\n\nThanks to this immutability, a UUID and a timerange always refers to a specific sequence of media.\nUnless you need to read the samples, you don’t need to copy the media, instead just working by reference.\nMetadata operations can all be carried out without moving media files around, so lightweight metadata operations can have lightweight implementations.\n\nWe designed TAMS cloud-first.\nWhen run on public cloud services TAMS benefits from the scalability, robustness and availability of any well-designed cloud service.\nFreed from the limitations of a fixed-size appliance, the TAMS can become the core of a whole media ecosystem.\nNext-generation tools and systems communicate via, or with reference to, the store, just by making HTTP requests.\nImmutability means that references are always valid.\nWide availability means large organisations like the BBC can easily share assets between staff and partners.\nAccess controls can be put in place as needed for business reasons, using standard web security techniques, rather than being imposed by technical limitations.\n\nThanks to adopting cloud-style separation of concerns, essence storage is delegated to a cloud service.\nAs a result storage can be chosen on a flexible and dynamic basis.\nMedia can be moved between locations and storage tiers as needed.\nUsers of TAMS [Example API Usage Scripts](./examples/README.md)\n\n## Design\n\nThe store handles Flows which exist on an infinite timeline, are immutable, and can be grouped by Sources (based on the Flows and Sources in the [AMWA NMOS MS-04 model](https://specs.amwa.tv/ms-04/releases/v1.0.0/docs/2.1._Summary_and_Definitions.html)).\nA Flow ID and timerange refers to a sequence of grains (_e.g._ frames of video or set of audio samples) and any point in a Flow can be uniquely addressed by a `\u003cflow_id, timestamp\u003e` tuple.\nThis unique address is guaranteed to refer to a specific frame, or set of audio samples, so it can be safely passed around other tools or programs.\nAt any time the unique address can be exchanged for the media data by an API call.\nBut if that is not needed, media work can be done purely by reference.\n\nGrains are grouped into Flow Segments, containing for example one second of content, wrapped in a container format such as MPEG-TS.\nThe store provides a mechanism to upload and register new Flow Segments, and an interface to request all the Flow Segments covering a particular timerange and their download URLs; an approach inspired by chunked streaming protocols like HTTP Live Streaming.\n\n\u003e [!NOTE]\n\u003e TAMS does not specify which container format should be used.\n\u003e But conventions are emerging for common technical profiles used in interoperable implementations.\n\nThe media data contained within Flow Segments may be stored separately from the metadata linking them to a position on the timeline, separating the media data and metadata planes.\nFor example our implementation uses a database (_e.g._ Amazon DynamoDB) to store Flow Segment metadata and an object store (_e.g._ AWS S3) to store the media data for Flow Segments.\nWe refer to media data stored in the object store as 'Media Objects'.\nThe Flow Segment has a list of S3 download urls which are the location of the Media Object(s) that contains the stored media data for the Flow Segment.\nIf multiple URLs are returned in the list, they are assumed to return identical media data.\nWhen writing to the store, the S3 URLs can be passed to a client permitting them to upload media data directly.\n\nAnother advantage of separating the media data and metadata planes in this way is that a particular Media Object can be referenced by multiple Flows.\nOn the metadata side, the Flow Segment is just a mapping of a Media Object's ID to a Flow's Timeline, so any number of Flows can record that same ID against other `\u003cflow_id, timestamp\u003e` tuples.\nThis allows for copy-on-write semantics: immutability means a new Flow must be created to make changes to existing parts of the timeline, but for unmodified portions of the timeline the new `\u003cflow_id, timestamp\u003e` tuple points to the existing Media Object or a part of it.\nSee [Flow And Media Timelines](#flow-and-media-timelines) for a description of how that works in practice.\n\nThe Flow model is aligned with the principles and schemas of [AMWA NMOS IS-04](https://specs.amwa.tv/is-04/releases/v1.3.2/APIs/schemas/) to facilitate easy integration of NMOS-compliant media devices.\n\n### Reading and Writing in the Store\n\nThe process of reading from the store is:\n\n1. Client identifies the Flow ID and timerange of interest\n2. Client makes a request to [`GET flows/\u003cflow_id\u003e/segments?timerange=\u003ctimerange\u003e`](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/operations/GET_flows-flowId-segments) and receives a list of Flow Segments, including their timeranges and download URLs\n3. Client downloads each URL, concatenates the Flow Segments together and unwraps the grains within\n4. The first and last Flow Segment may contain more grains than requested, so the client should skip any received not in the requested timerange\n\nThe process of writing to the store is:\n\n1. Client creates a Flow if necessary by making a request to [`PUT flows/\u003cflow_id\u003e`](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/operations/PUT_flows-flowId)\n2. Client makes a request to [`POST flows/\u003cflow_id\u003e/storage`](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/operations/POST_flows-flowId-storage) and receives a list of URLs to PUT media data into\n3. Client breaks content into Flow Segments (each of which should contain complete decodable units, _e.g._ a number of complete GOPs for video) and uploads the corresponding media data\n4. Client makes requests to [`POST flows/\u003cflow_id\u003e/segments`](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/operations/POST_flows-flowId-segments) with details of each new Flow Segment created, to register them on the timeline\n\n### Sources\n\nSources represent the abstract concept of a piece of content, which can be represented by a (or a number of) Flows, as described in \u003chttps://specs.amwa.tv/ms-04/releases/v1.0.0/docs/2.1._Summary_and_Definitions.html\u003e.\nFor example a video Source might be represented by a Flow for the original content, and another Flow containing a lower-bitrate proxy.\nSources can also be collected into other Sources - for example a video Source and an audio Source contribute to another Source representing the muxed content.\nConventionally the store contains elemental Flows, represented by elemental Sources, which are collected into muxed Sources, although the model also makes it possible to represent a muxed Source with a Flow (e.g. representing a muxed file).\n\nMedia workflows and applications are likely to use Sources as their references to media, for example a MAM might reference an asset using the ID of a muxed Source (in lieu of a filename).\nThen some logic can be applied to identify a suitable Flow representing that Source at the point when operations need to be performed on the media, for example choosing between proxy-quality for an offline edit and full-quality for a render.\n\nThe TAMS API stores both Flows and Sources, each of which can be assigned a label, description and some tags alongside relevant technical metadata.\nFlows can be collected into other Flows (with a `role` parameter to ascribe meaning to the relationship).\nSources can collect together other Sources, by inference from the relationships defined by their Flows.\nThis implementation is deliberately kept very simple, and lacks efficient mechansisms to query the graph of Sources and Flows.\nMore sophisticated mechanisms for recording and querying relationships between model entities is out of scope for this API, but could in principle be provided by a separate complementary service dedicated to that purpose in the future.\n\n### Mutation\n\nFlows in the store are assumed to be immutable: once a grain has been written to a point on the timeline on a specific Flow, it cannot be changed.\nHowever Flows can always be extended, with empty spaces on the timeline filled in, and areas of the timeline can be permanently erased.\n\nWhen it becomes necessary to mutate content, for example reversioning content or performing production operations, the Flow ID (and potentially Source ID) will change.\nVarious scenarios are explored in the [Practical Guidance for Media](https://specs.amwa.tv/ms-04/releases/v1.0.0/docs/3.0._Practical_Guidance_for_Media.html) section of AMWA MS-04.\n\n### Flow and Media Timelines\n\nFlows exist on an infinite timeline (the \"Flow timeline\"), and the position of content on this timeline is defined by the `timerange` attribute in each Flow Segment of that Flow.\nA timerange is represented in JSON and text using the [TimeRange string pattern](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/schemas/timerange).\nSeparately the Media Objects have a timeline (the \"media timeline\") defined by, or implied by, the container format itself: the timestamps recorded inside the Media Object for each grain in the natural format for that container.\nFor example in MPEG-TS that would be the presentation timestamp (PTS), or for a container without timing it may be derived from a frame count and rate.\nThe Flow Segment attributes describe how to map the media timeline onto the Flow timeline.\nFor Flows using codecs with temporal re-ordering, both of these timelines represent the presentation timeline of the media.\nNote that no explicit relationship is defined between the Flow timelines of different Flows, although a mechanism to define that may be added in future.\n\nFor brevity these diagrams start at `0:0`, however it is likely a practical system would stick closer to wall-clock time or TAI, such as starting at `1709634568:0`.\nA timestamp is represented in JSON and text using the [Timestamp string pattern](https://bbc.github.io/tams/5.1/index.html#/schemas/timestamp).\n\n![Graphic of Flow A in the diagram above, this is a 1:1 mapping.\nHowever, in the diagram below the media timeline and Flow timeline differ, because the Media Objects in Flow B have been re-used from Flow A (note the use of the same Media Object ID).\nThese re-used Media Objects have their original media timeline, and each grain's position on the Flow timeline can be calculated as `media_timeline + refers to the Flow timeline (and `0:50...` etc. is used as shorthand for `0:500000000`), however a reduced number of grains have been selected, taking only part of the first Media Object and part of has been used](./docs/images/Flow%20and%20Media%20Timelines-Flow%20C.drawio.png)\n\nIn this way a simple copy-on-write mechanic can be applied to the store, for example when taking \"clips\" from multiple Flows and assembling them, the original Media Objects (and therefore essence) can be referenced, and new Media Objects are only required to handle changes, for example transitions.\nIn the diagram below, portions of Flow X and Flow Y are combined to form Flow Z, along with some rendered transitions which are \"new\" media, and new Media Objects accordingly.\n\n![Graphic showing the Flow client may need to read (and potentially decode, in the case of inter-frame video codecs) the entire Object, discarding the unwanted grains and returning those selected by the Segment to the consumer.\nThis can be handled by mapping the Object's timeline into the Flow timeline by adding `include_object_timerange=true` to the Flow Segment request, and then adding `ts_offset` to the Object timeranges.\nThen the reader can compare the Segment and Object timeranges to work out how much to skip at the beginning and end of the Media Object, the `object_timerange` approach.\n\nAlternatively `ts_offset` can be added to each timestamp inside the Media Object, and then grains can be discarded when the resulting timestamp falls outside the given `timerange` for the Segment.\n\n![Graphic above shows three of the Media Objects used by Flow Z and a smaller portion of the Flow Z timeline considered previously, with both the Media Object timeline (and `object_ts`) and Flow timeline (`segment_ts`) of each grain in the Media Object along the bottom.\n\nThe `object_timerange` approach can be applied to ffmpeg by first calculating `skip = timerange.start - (object_timerange.start + ts_offset)`.\n\n- `-ss` should be set to the `skip` time in seconds.\n- `-t` should be set to the duration in seconds, derrived from the Segment timerange\n- `-output_ts_offset` should be set to the start time of the Segment in seconds, to re-map the timestamps embedded in the output segment onto the Flow timeline\n\nNote however that for this to be frame-accurate in codecs using temporal re-ordering, the input must be transcoded.\nFor example for Media Object Y05 in Flow Z above:\n\n```bash\nffmpeg -i segment -ss 0.3 -t 0.5 -output_ts_offset 3.5 -muxpreload 0 -muxdelay 0 \\\n  -vcodec libx264 output_segment.ts\n```\n\nThe `timerange`/`ts_offset` approach is illustrated by the following pseudocode, which shows how a client might apply the `ts_offset` to each `object_ts`, then validate whether it is inside the given `timerange`.\nNote that the `object_ts` may be a different precision or timebase to the nanosecond timestamps used by TAMS, so some conversion may be required.\n\n```python\nobject_ts = to_timestamp(ts)          # `4:0` for `ts = 4.0sec`\noffset_object_ts = object_ts + ts_offset    # `4:0 + -0:700000000 = 3:300000000` (in Flow timeline)\nif (offset_object_ts \u003c timerange.start or\n      offset_object_ts \u003e= timerange.end):  # `3:300000000 is less than 3:500000000`\n    discard_grain()                  # So this grain is discarded\nelse:\n    keep_grain()                     # The first grain to be retained will have `object_ts = 4.2`\n                                     # (and `offset_object_ts = 3:500000000 or 3.5sec)`\n```\n\nThe diagram below also shows how both approaches might be applied to a Flow using an MPEG-TS container: by working out how much to skip using `object_timerange` and by using and sent to interested clients in response to certain events, such as the creation of a new Flow.\nThis is intended to reduce the amount of polling required by clients to keep up with activity on a store by providing a way to push updates about content they have access to instead.\n\nHowever the specification is deliberately left open-ended; only the message bodies are specified, but not the protocol by which they are carried nor the method by which clients subscribe.\nIt is assumed that implementations will provide a suitable mechanism, such as a call to allow clients to subscribe to webhooks, or details of an event bus to connect to and receive the messages.\n\n### API Versioning\n\nThe API is versioned using a major and minor version number.\nA breaking change - such as removal of a feature, or renaming of properties in such a way that would break compatibility (including fixing a typo) - results in a major version increment and the minor version is reset to 0.\nFeatures such new endpoints or new (optional) data properties result in a minor version increment.\nOther changes such as documentation changes do not result in version updates.\nNote that the version may change frequently whilst the API is still under development!\n\nVersions are calculated automatically upon release using 'magic' strings included in commit messages:\n    - `sem-ver: api-break` - where a breaking change is made (results in a major version bump)\n    - `sem-ver: feature` - where a new feature has been added (results in a minor version bump)\n    - `sem-ver: deprecation` - where an existing feature has been marked as deprecated, but not yet removed (results in a minor version bump)\nCommits without one of these magic strings are assumed to be unsubstantial and will not result in a version bump.\nVersions will only be incremented once when a release is made.\nIf there are multiple commits since the last release, the major version number will be incremented by 1, and minor version set to 0 if at least one of the commits contains an `api-break`.\nIf there are no `api-break` changes since the last release, the minor version will be incremented by 1 if at least one commit contains a `feature` or `deprecation` change.\nOtherwise, the version will not change.\n\nIt is possible to see what the version would be if a release was made at the current commit by running `make next-version` in the top directory of this repository.\n\n### Security\n\nThe TAMS specification stipulates authentication methods that a client should support in order to identify themselves and provide credentials to the server, using standard HTTP approaches.\nThe authorisation model (the rules by which authenticated requests are allowed or denied) is not part of the TAMS specification, and is up to individual implementers and organisations depending on their exact rules, needs and threat model.\nHowever some principles and suggestions are discussed in [AppNote0016: Authorisation in TAMS workflows](./docs/appnotes/0016-authorisation-in-tams-workflows.md).\n\nIt is assumed that implementations will apply other IT and cloud infrastructure security best practices, notably including the use of TLS (e.g. HTTPS connections) within and between their systems.\n\n## Proposals, Decisions and Architecture Changes\n\nThis repository uses [(M)ADR documents](https://adr.github.io/madr/) to
