See our\n'contrib.txt' and 'help merc' for acknowledgements.  Send us your contribution,\nand you'll be in there too!\n\nEnjoy our mud.  May your visit here be ... Mercenary.\n\nThis is the 2.1 production release of Merc.\n\n\n\n=== Copyright and License\n\nDiku Mud is copyright (C) 1990, 1991 by Sebastian Hammer, Michael Seifert,\nHans Henrik St{rfeldt, Tom Madsen, and Katja Nyboe.  Their license agreement\nis in the file 'license.doc'.\n\nMerc Diku Mud is a derivative of the original Diku Mud and is subject to their\ncopyright and license agreement.  Merc Diku Mud contains substantial\nenhancements to Diku Mud.  These enhancements are copyright 1992, 1993 by\nMichael Chastain, Michael Quan, and Mitchell Tse.  Our license agreement is in\n'license.txt'.\n\nThe license terms boil down to this: the people who wrote this mud want due\ncredit for their work.\n\n\n\n=== Contents of the Release\n\n\tarea\tArea files.\n\tdoc\tDocumentation.\n\tlog\tLog files    (initially empty).\n\tplayer\tPlayer files (initially empty).\n\tsrc\tSource files.\n\n\n\n=== How to Install\n\nFirst, group with your highest level Unix guru, and have him or her tank.\nMerc is easier to install than other muds, but every site is different.\n\n(1) Get the release Merc_21.tar.gz from one of these fine anonymous ftp\n    sites:\n\n\tftp.tcp.com (formerly ferkel.ucsb.edu)\n\tftp.math.okstate.edu\n    \n(2) Unpack the release:\n\n\tgzip -d -c Merc_21.tar.gz | tar xvf -\n\n(3) Go into the 'src' directory.  Choose the Makefile for your operating\n    system and copy it into 'Makefile':\n\n\tMakefile\tMost machines with 'gcc'\n\tMakefile.aix\tAIX\n\tMakefile.hp\tHp/UX\n\tMakefile.isc\tInteractive Systems Unix\n\tMakefile.mip\tMips Risc/OS\n\tMakefile.nex\tNeXT\n\tMakefile.sol\tSunSoft Solaris 2.1\n\tMakefile.tra\tTraditional C (see 'trad.txt')\n\n    Merc.exe, a pre-built MsDos executable, is included in the release.\n    See 'port.txt' for more information on porting, including the\n    single-user MsDos and Macintosh versions.\n\n(4) Run 'make' with the following options:\n\n\tmake -k \u003e\u0026! make.out\n\n    This will take 10 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on the speed of your\n    computer.\n\n    If you encounter errors with 'make', send us your 'make.out' file:\n\n\tmail -s make.out mec@shell.portal.com \u003c make.out\n\n    Also we'll need to know what kind of hardware, operating system,\n    and C compiler you have.\n\n    We will help you get Merc running, but obviously we can't guarantee\n    Merc will run on any particular machine.\n\n(5) Start the game:\n\n\tstartup \u0026\n\ttelnet localhost 4000\n\t\n(6) To make your first immortal character, just start as a mortal\n    character, play at least as far as level 2, and then edit the\n    player file and change your level.  (After the first immortal,\n    you can advance the rest).\n\n(7) If you haven't already done so, read 'license.doc' and 'license.txt'.\n    Because Merc is a derivative work of Diku Mud, you must register\n    your mud with the original Diku implementors.\n  \n(8) Of course you're going to change the title screen, help files, and so on.\n    Don't just globally erase the 'Merc' references, ok?  You wouldn't\n    like it if we did that to your work, so don't do it to ours.\n\n\n\n=== Support\n\nFirst, read the documentation in the 'doc' directory.  We rewrote all of the\ndocumentation files from scratch for the 2.0 Alpha release, and have been\nkeeping them up-to-date since.\n\nAlso check the 'wizhelp' command and read the 'help' descriptions for the\nindividual immortal commands.\n\nThere is a mailing list at 'merc@kpc.com'.  Send mail to 'merc-request@kpc.com'\nto join the list.\n\nYou can write to us directly at the e-mail addresses at the top of this\ndocument.\n\nWhen you write us, we need to know what kind of machine you're running on.  If\nyou can give us specific information about the problem, that helps too.\n\nSpecific information means: an adb or gdb stack trace (if you're reporting a\ncrash), or a syslog with the relevant commands logged.  The player files are\nascii files -- dump them into your mail message too.\n\nIf your e-mail is too vague, we're likely to bounce it back.  There are three\nof us and dozens of you -- we simply can't engage in long-distance debugging,\non unknown platforms, with the added factor of more code that you've dropped in\nsince the release.\n\n\n\n=== Future Plans\n\nWe have finished core development of Merc.  There will never be a Merc 3.\nIt's your mud now -- the end of our development is the beginning of yours.\n\nWe will continue making maintenance releases to fix bugs, add new platform\nsupport, and fold in contributed code and areas.  The next release of Merc,\nversion 2.2, will be on 05 Sep 1993.\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fblakepell%2Faarchonmud","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fblakepell%2Faarchonmud","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fblakepell%2Faarchonmud/lists"}
