TCP Server is a simple, written in python, Modbus TCP server.\nThe Modbus registers can also be predefined with values.\n\nThe Modbus server was initially created to act as a Modbus slave mock system\nfor enhanced tests with modbus masters and to test collecting values from different registers.\n\nThe Modbus specification can be found here: [PDF](https://modbus.org/docs/Modbus_Application_Protocol_V1_1b3.pdf)\n\n## Own Docker builds and version pinning\n\nIf you want to build your own container image with the [Dockerfile](./Dockerfile) you should know that the file uses version pinning to have a deterministic environment for the application.\nThis is a best practice and described in [Hadolint DL3018](https://github.com/hadolint/hadolint/wiki/DL3018).\n\nThe problem is, that Alpine Linux doesn't keep old versions inside the software repository. When software will be updated, the old (pinned) version will be removed and is so no longer available.\nDocker builds will be successful today and fail tomorrow.\n\nSee also here: [https://github.com/hadolint/hadolint/issues/464](https://github.com/hadolint/hadolint/issues/464)\n\nThe [Dockerfile](./Dockerfile) in this repo may have an not working stand of pinned versions. When you run in errors during your own build, please:\n\n1. Update the versions inside the Dockerfile for your own\n2. Don't create an issue in the Github repo, because this is a known issue\n\n## QuickStart with Modbus TCP Server and Docker\n\nStep - 1 : Pull the Modbus TCP Server\n\n```bash\ndocker pull oitc/modbus-server\n```\n\nStep - 2 : Run the Modbus TCP Server\n\n```bash\ndocker run --rm -p 5020:5020 oitc/modbus-server:latest\n```\n\nStep - 3 : Predefine registers\n\nThe default configuration file is configured to initialize every register with a `0x0000`.\nTo set register values, you need to create your own configuration file.\n\n```bash\ndocker run --rm -p 5020:5020 -v ./server_config.json:/server_config.json oitc/modbus-server:latest -f /server_config.json\n```\n\nor you mount the config file over the default file, then you can skip the file parameter:\n\n```bash\ndocker run --rm -p 5020:5020 -v ./server_config.json:/app/modbus_server.json oitc/modbus-server:latest\n```\n\n## Configuration\n\n### Container configuration\n\nThe container reads some configuration via environment variables.\n\n| Environment variable name | Description | Required | Default value |\n|------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|--------------|---------------------------|\n| `CONFIG_FILE` | The configuration file that that should be used to build the initial Modbus slave. | **OPTIONAL** | `/app/modbus_server.json` |\n\n### Parameters\n\nAlternatively, the container can also be configured with a command line option `-f \u003cfile\u003e` instead of an environment variable. By default, the script will use `/app/modbus_server.json`.\n\n### Configuration file\n\n#### Default configuration file of the container\n\nThe `/app/modbus_server.json` file comes with following content:\n\n```json\n{\n\"server\": {\n \"listenerAddress\": \"0.0.0.0\",\n \"listenerPort\": 5020,\n \"protocol\": \"TCP\",\n \"tlsParams\": {\n \"description\": \"path to certificate and private key to enable tls\",\n \"privateKey\": null,\n \"certificate\": null\n },\n \"logging\": {\n \"format\": \"%(asctime)-15s %(threadName)-15s %(levelname)-8s %(module)-15s:%(lineno)-8s %(message)s\",\n \"logLevel\": \"INFO\"\n }\n },\n \"persistence\": {\n \"enabled\": false,\n \"file\": \"/data/modbus_registers.json\",\n \"saveInterval\": 30\n },\n\"metrics\": {\n \"enabled\": false,\n \"address\": \"0.0.0.0\",\n \"port\": 9090,\n \"path\": \"/metrics\"\n},\n\"registers\": {\n \"description\": \"initial values for the register types\",\n \"initializeUndefinedRegisters\": true,\n \"discreteInput\": {},\n \"coils\": {},\n \"holdingRegister\": {},\n \"inputRegister\": {}\n }\n}\n```\n\n#### Field description\n\n| Field | Type | Description |\n|------------------------------------------|---------|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|\n| `server` | Object | Modbus slave specific runtime parameters. |\n| `server.listenerAddress` | String | The IPv4 address to bind to, when starting the server. `\"0.0.0.0\"` lets the server listen on all interface addresses. |\n| `server.listenerPort` | Integer | The port number of the modbus slave to listen to. |\n| `server.protocol` | String | Defines if the server should use `TCP` or `UDP` (default: `TCP`) |\n| `server.tlsParams` | Object | Configuration parameters to use TLS encrypted modbus tcp slave. We use a json format as configuration file, so the \"key\" needs to be a string. So, the register number needs also to be a string. During server initialization, the json key that represents the register number will be converted to an integer.\n\nAs by the modbus spec, the \"Discrete Input\" and \"Coils\" registers contains a single bit. In the json configuration file, we use `true` or `false` as register values.\n\nExample configuration of pre-defined registers from type \"Discrete Input\" or \"Coils\":\n\n```json\n[..]\n \"\u003cregister_type\u003e\": {\n \"0\": true,\n \"1\": true,\n \"42\": true,\n \"166\": false\n }\n[..]\n```\n\nAs by the modbus spec, the \"Holding Registers\" and \"Input Registers\" tables contains a 16-bit word. In the json configuration file, we use a hexadecimal notation, starting with `0x`, as register values.\nWith v1.2.0 of the modbus-server, you can also use integer values (0-65535) instead.\n\nExample configuration of pre-defined registers from type \"Holding Registers\" or \"Input Registers\":\n\n```json\n[..]\n \"\u003cregister_type\u003e\": {\n \"9\": \"0xAA00\",\n \"23\": \"0xBB11\",\n \"142\": \"0x1FC3\",\n \"2346\": \"0x00FF\"\n }\n[..]\n```\n\n### Configuration file examples\n\n* [src/app/modbus_server.json](https://github.com/cybcon/modbus-server/blob/main/src/app/modbus_server.json)\n* [examples/abb_coretec_example.json](https://github.com/cybcon/modbus-server/blob/main/examples/abb_coretec_example.json)\n* [examples/test.json](https://github.com/cybcon/modbus-server/blob/main/examples/test.json)\n* [examples/udp.json](https://github.com/cybcon/modbus-server/blob/main/examples/udp.json)\n\n## Data persistence\n\nThe persistence layer enables all register changes (made by Modbus write accesses) to be automatically saved and restored after the server is restarted.\n\n### Functionality\n\n#### When starting up\n\n* The server checks whether a persistence file exists.\n* **If YES**: Loads all register values from the file (initial configuration is skipped)\n* **If NO**: Use the initial configuration from `modbus_server.json`\n\n#### During operation\n\n* A background thread periodically saves the register data (default: every 30 seconds).\n* Only changed data is saved (optimized for performance)\n* Uses atomic writes (prevents data loss in case of crashes)\n\n#### When shutting down\n\n* A final save is performed.\n* All current register values are backed up.\n\n### Configuration of the persistence layer\n\n#### Enable persistence\n\nAdd the following section to your `modbus_server.json`:\n\n```json\n{\n \"server\": { ... },\n \"persistence\": {\n \"enabled\": true,\n \"file\": \"/app/modbus_registers.json\",\n \"saveInterval\": 30\n },\n \"metrics\": { ... },\n \"registers\": { ... }\n}\n```\n\n### Persistence file format\n\nThe persistence file is saved as JSON:\n\n```json\n{\n \"discrete_inputs\": {\n \"0\": false,\n \"1\": true,\n \"100\": true\n },\n \"coils\": {\n \"0\": true,\n \"1\": false,\n \"50\": true\n },\n \"holding_registers\": {\n \"0\": 1234,\n \"1\": 5678,\n \"100\": 42\n },\n \"input_registers\": {\n \"0\": 100,\n \"1\": 200\n }\n}\n```\n\n**Hint:** Only registers with values ≠ 0 are stored (space-saving).\n\n### Backup\n\nFor critical applications, you should create regular backups. When using Docker, you need to mount a local directory as volume to `/data` inside the container first.\n\n```bash\n# Cron-Job for daily backup\n0 2 * * * cp /local/path/to/modbus_registers.json /local/backuppath/to/modbus_registers_$(date +\\%Y\\%m\\%d).json\n```\n\n## Metrics endpoint\n\nWhen activating the metrics endpoint, the modbus server provides to html endpoints:\n\n* `/health`: the health endpoint only shows the text string `OK` and can be used for monitoring. There is no other functionality behind.\n* `/metrics`: the metrics endpoint that provides system and operational metrics about python and the modbus server usage. The endpoint path can be changed in the configuration file.\n\n### Metrics endpoint metrics\n\nFollowing metrics will be collected:\n\n* memory_total_bytes: Gauge of total system memory\n* memory_available_bytes: Gauge of available system memory\n* memory_consumption_bytes: Gauge of current memory usage\n* memory_consumption_percentage: Gauge of memory usage percentage\n* cpu_usage_percentage: Gauge of current CPU usage percentage\n* cpu_count: Gauge of number of CPU cores\n* cpu_load1: Gauge of 1-minute load average per CPU\n* cpu_load5: Gauge of 5-minute load average per CPU\n* cpu_load15: Gauge of 15-minute load average per CPU\n* cpu_load1_percentage: Gauge of 1-minute load average as percentage of CPU capacity\n* cpu_load5_percentage: Gauge of 5-minute load average as percentage of CPU capacity\n* cpu_load15_percentage: Gauge of 15-minute load average as percentage of CPU capacity\n* modbus_requests_total: Counter of requests by function code\n* modbus_register_reads_total: Counter of read operations per register\n* modbus_register_writes_total: Counter of write operations per register\n* modbus_errors_total: Counter of errors by exception code\n* modbus_server_uptime_seconds: Counter of server uptime\n\n### Configuration of the metrics endpoint\n\nAdd the following section to your `modbus_server.json`:\n\n```json\n{\n \"server\": { ... },\n \"persistence\": { ... },\n \"metrics\": {\n \"enabled\": true,\n \"address\": \"0.0.0.0\",\n \"port\": 9090,\n \"path\": \"/metrics\"\n },\n \"registers\": { ... }\n}\n```\n\n### Metrics output example\n\nAn output example of the metrics can be found here: [examples/metrics_example.txt](https://github.com/cybcon/modbus-server/blob/main/examples/metrics_example.txt)\n\n## Docker compose configuration\n\n```yaml\nservices:\n modbus-server:\n container_name: modbus-server\n image: oitc/modbus-server:latest\n restart: always\n command: -f /server_config.json\n ports:\n - 5020:5020\n - 9090:9090\n volumes:\n - ./server.json:/server_config.json:ro\n - ./data:/data:rw\n```\n\n## Donate\n\nI would appreciate a small donation to support the further development of my open source projects.\n\n[![Donate with PayPal][donate-paypal-button]][donate-paypal-link]\n\n## License\n\nCopyright (c) 2020-2026 Michael Oberdorf IT-Consulting\n\nPermission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy\nof this software and associated documentation files (the \"Software\"), to deal\nin the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights\nto use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell\ncopies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is\nfurnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:\n\nThe above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all\ncopies or substantial portions of the Software.\n\nTHE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED \"AS IS\", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR\nIMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY,\nFITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
