is a self-executable archive generator for Linux. It generates\nan archive in the form of an ELF executable file that, when executed,\nwill extract its contents to a temporary directory, and then run a\nprogram called ``setup``, which *must* have been included with the\narchive files.\n\nIt comes with ``smartsetup``, a utility that will generate a ``setup``\nprogram for you, based on the ``dialog`` utility.\n\nYou may want to consider makeself_ as an alternative to this software.\n\n.. _makeself: https://makeself.io/\n\nInstalling\n----------\n\nMkarchive can be installed straight from PYPI using ``pip``::\n\n    python3 -m pip install mkarchive\n\nRequirements\n------------\n\nOn the development machine, ``mkarchive`` requires the ``gcc`` compiler\nto be in the path, and also ``libtar`` and ``zlib``.\n\nOn the target machine, it requires ``bash`` and ``libc6`` must be the\nsame version as  in the development machine. Also, depending on how you\ncreated the archive, it might need ``libtar`` and ``zlib`` to be installed.\nOn a Debian-like distro you may need to do::\n\n    $ apt install libtar-dev zlib1g-dev\n\n``mkarchive`` will try to link both libraries statically to relieve the\ntarget machine of this requirement but, obviously, the archive will be\na little heavier as a result.\n\nIf you are using ``dialog`` or ``whiptail`` then it needs to be\ninstalled on the target machine, or you may need to include it inside\nyour archive and provide a ``setup`` program that can find them.\n\nUsage\n-----\n\nTo simply create a self-extracting archive just use::\n\n    $ mkarchive *\n\nThis will archive all the files and directories on the current working\ndirectory and create the self-executable archive called ``selfextract``\nalso on the working directory.\n\nIf you want the archive to have a different name or to be created\nelsewhere, you can use the ``--output``, or ``-o`` option::\n\n    $ mkarchive -o ~/extractor.bin *\n\nNote that the archives, as mentioned above, after unarchiving, will run\na user-supplied program called ``setup`` that must have been included on\nthe top level directory.\n\nA minimal ``setup`` program could be::\n\n    #!/bin/bash\n    echo \"Hello, I'm $0 called with $1 and the working directory is $(pwd)\"\n\nWe can then create a minimal self-executable with it::\n\n    $ mkarchive setup\n    Creating tar '/tmp/tmpsqwogss0/_tmp.tar.gz'\n    Creating selfextract1\n    /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/selfextract1 created with size 104560\n    Recompiling /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/selfextract0.c\n    Size of /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/selfextract1 matches 104560\n    Concatenating /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/selfextract1 and /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/_tmp.tar.gz into selfextract\n    Adding /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/selfextract1\n    Adding /tmp/tmpsqwogss0/_tmp.tar.gz\n\nAnd then we can run the resulting ``selfextract`` archive::\n\n    $ ./selfextract\n    Hello, I'm /tmp/selfex__AvVAsz/setup called with /tmp/selfex__AvVAsz and the working directory is /home/javier\n\nYour program will probably need to be a tad more sophisticated than this\none and will use the directory supplied as its first argument to do its\njob.\n\nIf a ``setup`` program is not provided, mkarchive will\nsupply one for you that just copies the unarchived files and directories\nto the user's current working directory.\n\nAlso, in the examples above, ``mkarchive`` has found ``libtar.a`` and\n``libz.a`` on their default locations. You may want to specify a path to\nthese libraries using the ``--libtar`` and ``--zlib`` command line\noptions if you have your own compiled versions of these libraries, or\nyour distribution installs them at a different location than Ubuntu,\ne.g::\n\n    $ mkarchive --libtar /path/to/libtar.a --zlib /path/to/libz.a -o ~/extractor.bin setup file1 file2\n\nYou may link them dynamically by specifying ``-ltar`` and ``-lz``\nrespectively::\n\n   $ mkarchive --lbitar=-ltar --zlib=-lz setup file1 file2\n\n\nGenerating the ``setup`` program\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\n``mkarchive`` can generate the ``setup`` program for you using the\nincluded ``smartsetup`` utility. In order to do that you need to create\na YAML file containing a specification of the installer program. All it\ndoes is to make it a bit easier to write an installer program using\n``dialog`` screens.\n\nBasically, the installer specification has two sections: the ``install``\nsection that contains the screens of the installer, and an ``uninstall``\nsection. Each of these two sections contain a list of objects that\ncorrespond to parameters of the ``dialog`` utility, or a bash code\nsnippet, e.g::\n\n    install:\n      - type: inputbox\n        title: Enter input file\n        text: What file do you want to copy?\n        store: filetocopy\n        default: file1\n\n      - type: inputbox\n        title: Destination directory\n        text: Enter the destination directory\n        store: destdir\n\n      - type: code\n        text: cp -v $filetocopy $destdir\n\nAll types in the ``type`` field, except ``code`` correspond to dialog\ntypes of the ``dialog`` utility, e.g ``inputbox``, ``yesno``, ``checklist``\netc. ``title`` is the ``--title`` option and ``text`` is the text. Other\noptions can be specified as a list in the ``options`` field.\n\nWhen ``dialog`` would write a value to the error stream ``stderr`` you\ncan specify in the ``store`` field the  name of a variable to store it.\nWhen the result is the program return code, you can check it using\n``$exitval``.\n\nThe installer *must always* define the variable ``$destdir``, as it is\nwhere the uninstaller program (if there is an ``uninstall`` section)\nwill be created.\n\nThe dialogs may be shown conditionally by putting a condition in the\n``condition`` file. This should be the arguments of the ``test`` shell\ncommand e.g::\n\n    - title: Installation Successful\n      type: msgbox\n      condition: $success -eq 1\n      text: The installation of $program $version has been successful.\n\nHaving ``mkarchive`` create the setup program\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\n``mkarchive`` accepts the ``--install-spec`` command line option to\nspecify the YAML file specification.\n\nYou can also use one or more ``--var`` options to pre-define variables\navailable to the installer program.\n\nYou can use ``--dialog-tool`` to specify the path (on the destination\nmachine with an absolute path, or inside the archive with a relative\npath) of the ``dialog`` or ``whiptail`` command.\n\nFinally, you can specify a name for the uninstaller program using the\n``--uninstaller-name`` option::\n\n    $ mkarchive --output ~/mysoft_installer.bin      \\\n            --install-spec=setup.yml                 \\\n            --uninstaller-name=mysoft_uninstall.bin  \\\n            --var=program=mysoft                     \\\n            --var=version=1.2                        \\\n            file1 file2 dir1\n\nThe ``smartsetup`` utility\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nThe ``setup`` program can be generated independently of the\nself-extracting archive using the ``smartsetup`` command with options\nsimilar to the ones mentioned above::\n\n    $ smartsetup --help\n    usage: smartsetup [-h] [--name script-name] [--uname script-name]\n                      [--dialog-tool dialog-tool] [--var varname[=value]]\n                      spec\n\n    Generate installer/uninstaller scripts from a YAML specification\n\n    positional arguments:\n      spec                  Input specification in YAML\n\n    optional arguments:\n      -h, --help            show this help message and exit\n      --name script-name, -n script-name\n                            Generate script with this name. Default 'setup'\n      --uname script-name, -u script-name\n                            Name of the uninstaller script. Default 'uninstall'\n      --dialog-tool dialog-tool, -d dialog-tool\n                            Name of the dialog tool. Default 'dialog'\n      --var varname[=value], -v varname[=value]\n                            Define variable and its value for use in the script\n\nLicense\n-------\nThis software is released under the MIT License\n","funding_links":[],"categories":[],"sub_categories":[],"project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdestrangis%2Fmkarchive","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fdestrangis%2Fmkarchive","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdestrangis%2Fmkarchive/lists"}
