scopemon\nScoped execution monitoring for Node.js\n\n## Installation\n```\n# Using npm\nnpm install scopemon\n\n# or yarn\nyarn add scopemon\n```\n\n## Getting started\n_Note: all code samples are in Typescript_\n\nCreate a root monitor for your service or app:\n```typescript\nimport { Monitor } from 'scopemon';\n\nexport class AppContext {\n  private _monitor: Monitor;\n\n  constructor() {\n    this._monitor = new Monitor('my-app', []);\n  }\n\n  get monitor() {\n    return this._monitor;\n  }\n}\n```\nAnd use the monitor elsewhere\n```typescript\nimport { AppContext } from './app-context';\n\nconst app = new AppContext();\napp.monitor.report('topic', 'hello');\n```\n\n## Scoping the monitor\nMonitors should be scoped to a specific context, for example a class or method within a class:\n```typescript\nimport { AppContext } from './app-context';\n\nconst app = new AppContext();\nconst testModuleMonitor = app.monitor.scopeTo(module); // scoped to node module\n\nclass Test {\n  protected monitor = testModuleMonitor.scopeTo(this);\n\n  tryIt() {\n    // class scoped report\n    this.monitor.report('enter-method', {/* data */});\n\n    // or scope to this method, so that 'tryIt' method\n    // is captured as part of the report context\n    const monitor = this.monitor.scopeTo(this.tryIt);\n    monitor.report('enter-method');\n  }\n}\n```\nScopes can only change in the following ways:\n* _`root` =\u003e `module`_\n* _`module` =\u003e `class` or `function`_\n* _`class` =\u003e `method`_\n* _`method` =\u003e `function`_\n* _`function` =\u003e `function`_\n\n## Creating a director\nIn order to take action on monitor events, you'll need to create a director:\n```typescript\nimport { Director, Scope } from 'scopemon';\n\n// create a director class extending from the base\n// MyDirector will expect to receive data of type 'string'\nexport class MyDirector extends Director\u003cstring\u003e {\n\n  constructor() {\n    // provide topics this director will listen for\n    // in the constructor super call, as an array\n    // this directory will listen only for 'test'\n    super(['test']);\n  }\n\n  receive(topic: string, info: string, scope: Scope) {\n    // receive reports and handle them here\n    console.log(`new message from ${scope.path}: ${info}`);\n  }\n}\n```\nNext include the director in your root monitor. The second argument to Monitor accepts an array of directors that will be used to handle reports. Modify the first code example to include the director when creating the monitor:\n```\nthis._monitor = new Monitor('my-app', [new MyDirector()]);\n```\n\n## API\n### Monitor\n#### Monitor constructor: new Monitor(from, directors)\nCreates a new root monitor\n* param `from` - a string value naming the root monitor\n* param `directors` - an array of directors which will receive reports from the monitor\n* returns - a new `Monitor` instance\n\nExample usage:\n```javascript\nconst myMonitor = new Monitor('myApp', []);\n```\n\n### Monitor report method: monitor.report(topic, info)\nSends a report to listening directors\n* param `topic` - a string value indicating the topic to report on\n* param `info` - a user-defined value the provides information about the topic\n* returns - `void`\n\nExample usage:\n```javascript\nmonitor.report('log', 'something happened');\n```\n\n### Monitor scopeTo method: monitor.scopeTo(...context)\nCreates a new monitor scoped to the provided context\n* param `context` - a series of module, class instance, class method, or function handle\n* returns - a new `Monitor` instance\n\nExample usage:\n```javascript\nconst moduleMonitor = monitor.scopeTo(module); // inside a node module\nconst classMonitor = moduleMonitor.scopeTo(this); // inside a class\n\n// alternatively if your modules typically only contain a single class\n// you can scope directly from the root to a class:\nconst classMonitor = monitor.scopeTo(module, this);\n```\n\n### Director\n#### Director constructor (abstract): super(topics)\nCalled from derived class to set the topics\n* param `topics` - the topics the director will receive reports for\n* return - `void`\n\nExample usage:\n```javascript\nconstructor() {\n  super(['topic1', 'topic2']);\n}\n```\n\n#### Director receive method (abstract): director.receive(topic, info, scope)\nCalled when a monitor reports on a topic accepted by the director\n* param `topic` - the string topic value\n* param `into` - the user-defined report data\n* param `scope` - the monitor scope\n* returns - `void`\n\nExample usage:\n```javascript\nreceive(topic: string, info: string, scope: Scope) {\n  // receive reports and handle them here\n  console.log(`new message from ${scope.path}: ${info}`);\n}\n```\n\n### Scope\nThe scope received by a director has the following attributes:\n* field `name` - the name of the scope, for example class name, method name, function name\n* field `path` - the full scope path, for this scope and all ancestors, joined by '/'\n* field `root` - the root scope\n* field `parent` - the parent scope\n* field `context` - the scope context, which contains the following attributes:\n  * field `type` - the scope type of either `global`, `module`, `class`, `method`, or `function`\n  * field `reference` - a reference to the module, class, method or function used when creating the scope\n\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdorba%2Fscopemon","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fdorba%2Fscopemon","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdorba%2Fscopemon/lists"}
