Hybrid canon + real-physics analysis; audience framing is \"Senior Technical Director review.\"\n\n**Status:** **v0.2 released; CDR transition active.** PDR (Phases 0–5) complete and tagged at `v0.2` (74-page PDF). PDR → CDR transition launched 2026-04-26: real-CDR fidelity over Phases 6–19 with periodic incremental releases v0.3 → v1.0. Phase 6 (CDR Foundation) complete; Phase 7 partial. Latest tag: `v0.3-rc`. Plan: `/Users/parobek/.claude/plans/what-s-next-in-the-vast-stonebraker.md`.\n\n## The question this project answers\n\n*Can you design a 120-km planet-killing battle station on paper using mostly real physics, and honestly track where you cheat?*\n\nShort answer: yes, if you accept **one** irreducible physics concession — a bulk substrate with specific energy density at or above c² (\"hypermatter\"). With that one concession, every downstream subsystem — reactor, superlaser, shield, drive, turbolasers — follows as a large-but-finite extrapolation of known engineering (10–15 orders of magnitude beyond current capability, but internally consistent). Remove hypermatter and the concept collapses across six independent physics walls. The full accounting is in the ten-entry **handwavium ledger** (`docs/10-handwavium-ledger.md`), which every subsystem claim in the spec traces back to.\n\n## What's in this repository\n\n```\nDS-1_Plans/\n├── ref-docs/      # Source authority — the monolithic markdown spec\n├── docs/          # Derived PDR document tree: executive summary, 11 subsystems,\n│                  # DS-2 delta, 7 engineering-artifact appendices (MPT budget,\n│                  # nomenclature, references, figures index, FMEA, V\u0026V plan,\n│                  # DS-2 rebudget, figure-generation prompts)\n├── to-dos/        # Phase plan + sprint backlog + live PROJECT-STATUS\n├── code-artifacts/# Reference implementations of the interactive console (read-only)\n├── proj-code/     # Final Vite + React + TypeScript interactive console\n│                  # (companion artifact to the PDF)\n├── typeset/       # Typst build pipeline for the published PDF\n├── CHANGELOG.md   # Project-level history (component changelogs live in their subdirs)\n├── CLAUDE.md      # Conventions for AI assistants working in this repo\n├── NOTICE.md      # Rights + third-party acknowledgements\n└── README.md      # This file\n```\n\n## The deliverable\n\nA 30–60-page typeset PDF produced by the Typst pipeline in `typeset/`, backed by the interactive console in `proj-code/`. The PDF is for distribution and citation; the console is for exploration and peer review.\n\n## Quick start\n\n### Read the spec as markdown\nOpen `docs/README.md` for the document-set navigation. Reading order is listed there.\n\n### Build the PDF (Phase 5)\nRequires pandoc ≥ 3.0, Typst ≥ 0.11, and the JetBrains Mono + Chakra Petch fonts.\n```\n./typeset/build.sh\n# output: dist/DS-1-PDR-v0.2.pdf\n```\n\n### Run the interactive console (Phase 5 companion)\nZero-install path — open `proj-code/DS1-Engineering-Console.html` in a browser (uses CDN React + Recharts). Dev path:\n```\ncd proj-code\nnpm install\nnpm run dev\n```\n\n### Generate figures (Phase 3)\n\n`docs/appendix-D2-figure-prompts.md` partitions the 30 figures across four production tools: Google Gemini Nano Banana 2 for the 13 illustrative plates (cutaways, schematics, sphere maps), Mermaid for 8 flowcharts and one sequence diagram, Graphviz for 2 fault trees, and matplotlib for 7 plots. Output lands in `docs/figures/`; reproducible source artifacts (`.mmd` / `.dot` / `.py` / prompt text) live alongside in `docs/figures/_sources/`.\n\nThe 17 programmatic figures are rendered and committed (DRAFT status). To regenerate from sources:\n\n```\n# matplotlib (creates a local venv; one-time)\ncd docs/figures/_sources\npython3 -m venv .venv \u0026\u0026 .venv/bin/pip install matplotlib numpy\n.venv/bin/python F-figures.py\n\n# Mermaid (requires npm i -g @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli)\n./render-mermaid.sh\n\n# Graphviz (requires brew install graphviz)\ndot -Tsvg F-9.1.dot -o ../F-9.1.svg \u0026\u0026 dot -Tsvg F-9.2.dot -o ../F-9.2.svg\n```\n\n## Project phases\n\n- **Phase 0 · Foundation** · done 2026-04-21\n- **Phase 1 · Document split** · done 2026-04-21 (ref-doc → 13 sections + appendices)\n- **Phase 2 · Engineering artifacts** · done 2026-04-22 (MPT budget, FMEA, V\u0026V, nomenclature, references, figure index, DS-2 rebudget, HW→DR gap closure)\n- **Phase 3 · Figures** · substantively complete (2026-04-26) — all 30 figures embedded in subsystem markdown with captions; first end-to-end Typst PDF builds at `dist/DS-1-PDR-v0.2.pdf`. 17 programmatic figures (8 Mermaid + 2 Graphviz + 7 matplotlib) flipped to FINAL after palette + content verification. 13 Nano Banana 2 illustrative figures remain DRAFT pending iteration on minor label artifacts.\n- **Phase 4 · Peer review** · complete (2026-04-26) — three parallel-agent audits over S4.0..S4.5: 0 numerical discrepancies; 0 broken forward citations; 1 dead reverse-citation remediated (Bobrick \u0026 Martire arXiv:2102.06824); 3 broken `§3.6 → §4.6` cross-references remediated; HW↔DR bidirectional traceability clean; FMEA action coverage clean; senior-engineer verdict PDR-ready\n- **Phase 5 · Publication** · complete (2026-04-26) — front matter authored (Approval, Revision History, Distribution / Classification, Contents, List of Figures × 30, List of Tables, Acronym short-list); JetBrains Mono + Chakra Petch installed; template compressed 119 → 74 pages; proof-read PASS; SHA-256 captured; git tag `v0.2` applied. Release artifact: `dist/DS-1-PDR-v0.2.pdf`.\n\n## CDR transition (Phases 6–19, v0.2 → v1.0)\n\nPDR is the architectural-level pass; CDR brings every subsystem to component-level fidelity, full ICDs, narrated FEA-class analyses, full FMEA (200+ rows), reliability/availability/maintainability tree, software/firmware architecture, manufacturing/CONOPS, cost/schedule, regulatory/compliance, and full DS-2 delta CDR. Target PDF 300–500+ pages. Wall-clock estimate: 60–80 user-active sessions. Plan: `/Users/parobek/.claude/plans/what-s-next-in-the-vast-stonebraker.md`. Conventions: `to-dos/cdr-conventions.md`; configuration management: `docs/appendix-G-configuration-management.md`; drafting standards: `docs/appendix-H-drafting-standards.md`.\n\n- **Phase 6 · CDR Foundation** · complete (2026-04-26, v0.3-rc) — conventions doc, configuration management appendix, ICD template, Typst CDR helpers (`cdr-callout` / `two-col` / `icd-header` / `requirement-row`).\n- **Phase 7 · Drafting \u0026 Schematic Standards (+ S3.5 closeout)** · partial — drafting standards appendix authored (title-block, GD\u0026T crib, IEC 60617, ISO 14617, thermal block); S7.3 Rev A Nano Banana 2 prompts authored for F-2.1 / F-7.4 / F-A.1; user runs Rev A prompts → flip 13 §D.3 status rows → v0.3 final tag.\n- **Phases 8–19** · planned with sprint-level deliverables in `to-dos/phase-plan.md` and `to-dos/sprint-backlog.md`.\n\nLive status: `to-dos/PROJECT-STATUS.md`. Phase detail: `to-dos/phase-*.md`.\n\n## Key numerical baseline\n\nAll subsystem documents are consistent with these (`docs/01-design-basis.md`):\n\n| | DS-1 | DS-2 |\n|---|---|---|\n| Diameter | 120 km | 160 km |\n| Design-basis mass | 1.0 × 10¹⁸ kg | 2.37 × 10¹⁸ kg |\n| Per-shot energy | 2.24 × 10³² J (Earth binding energy) | same |\n| Sustained reactor | 2.6 × 10²⁷ W | 3-core sum 7.8 × 10²⁷ W |\n| Recharge | ~24 h | ~3–5 min (canon) |\n| Crew | 1.7 × 10⁶ | 637,835 |\n| Hypermatter specific energy | 9 × 10¹⁶ J/kg (= c²) | same |\n\n## Methodology\n\nThe spec uses a deliberate **honest-accounting** pattern. Every claim that exceeds real-physics envelope cites an **HW-ID** (HW-1 … HW-10) from the handwavium ledger. Every stakeholder requirement (SR-01 … SR-08) traces to one or more **derived requirements** (DR-01 … DR-16) with a verification class:\n\n- **A** — Analysis (numerical demonstration within stated assumptions)\n- **I** — Inspection (canon reconciliation)\n- **T** — Test-eligible via a real-world analog program\n- **C** — Concession (satisfied only by the cited HW-ID)\n\n8 of 16 DRs are Concession-class. That ratio is the honest measure of how much we're cheating.\n\n## Rights\n\nLicensed under [CC-BY-NC-4.0](LICENSE) — attribution required, non-commercial use. Issues and peer-review feedback are welcome via GitHub; please open an issue rather than a PR at this stage so contributions can be tracked against the phase plan.\n\n## References\n\nPrimary sources are consolidated in `docs/appendix-C-references.md`:\n- Canon + Legends (Wookieepedia, WEG *Death Star Technical Companion* 1991, DK *Incredible Cross-Sections*, Rogue One UVG)\n- Physicist analyses (Saxton, Wong, Siegel, Allain, Cox, Minton)\n- Economic (Centives / Lehigh; Feinstein arXiv:1511.09054)\n- Real-physics programs (NIF, TAE, Epirus, HELIOS, Psyche, ALPHA, NEXT-C, VASIMR, Lentz, MARAUDER)\n\nAll cited programs' status is current as of April 2026 — tracked in `proj-code/src/data/realWorld2026.ts` and the Ledger tab.\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdoublegate%2Fds-1_plans","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fdoublegate%2Fds-1_plans","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fdoublegate%2Fds-1_plans/lists"}
