This\npresents problems when needing a text representation of the subtitle, e.g. for\nlanguage learning. `vobsubocr` can alleviate this problem by generating SRT\nsubtitles from an input VobSub file, leveraging the power of\n[Tesseract](https://github.com/tesseract-ocr/tesseract).\n\n## Installation\n\nInstall the latest release with cargo:\n\n```sh\ncargo install vobsubocr\n```\n\nOr alternatively, install the development version from git:\n\n```sh\ncargo install --git https://github.com/elizagamedev/vobsubocr\n```\n\nYou will need to have Tesseract's development libraries installed; see the\n[leptess readme](https://github.com/houqp/leptess) for more details. If you use\nNix, the provided shell.nix provides an environment with all of the necessary\ndependencies.\n\n## Usage\n\n```sh\n# Convert simplified Chinese vobsub subtitles and print them to stdout.\nvobsubocr -l chi_sim shrek_chi.idx\n\n# Convert English vobsub subtitles and write them to a file named \"shrek_eng.srt\".\nvobsubocr -l eng -o shrek_eng.srt shrek_eng.idx\n```\n\nWe can also specify more advanced configuration options for Tesseract with `-c`.\n\n```sh\n# Convert subtitles and blacklist the specified characters from being (mistakenly) recognized.\nvobsubocr -l eng -c tessedit_char_blacklist='|\\/`_~' shrek_eng.idx\n```\n\n## How does it work/compare to similar tools?\n\nThe most comparable tool to `vobsubocr` is\n[VobSub2SRT](https://github.com/ruediger/VobSub2SRT), but `vobsubocr` has\nsignificantly better output, especially for non-English languages, mainly\nbecause `VobSub2SRT` does not do much preprocessing of the image at all before\nsending it to Tesseract.
