Within the realm of computer science and\nengineering, I think that there is too often a disconnect between the\ntwo halves of this equation. The research side is often accused of\nlacking context to the trials and tribulations of \"real-world\"\ndevelopers. Conversely, developers largely take for granted the debt\nowed to the researchers upon whose work they rely.\n\nResearch In Production is an attempt to bolster appreciation for the\nresearch side of R\u0026D by shedding light on some of the academic and\nindustrial research behind commonly-used softare systems.\n\nMost non-trivial software systems* are powered by concepts and\ntechniques that came into being after a group of people put a lot of\neffort into thinking their way through a tough problem. These concepts\nare typically hidden beneath the surface of abstractions and are thus\nnot easily appreciable. When writing a program, you probably don't\nhave time or motivation to dig into exactly how a data structure\nhandles concurrency or what happens to all the objects you're wantonly\ncreating.\n\nThis project is for those that want to go deeper, whether for the\nsimple satisfaction of knowing how a thing works or to\n[level up](https://mechanical-sympathy.blogspot.com/2011/07/why-mechanical-sympathy.html)\ntheir ability to build systems.\n\nThe common wisdom directed at newcomers looking to get involved in\nopen source software is to pick a project that they use and contribute\nto it by knocking out documentation and tests. Along similar lines, I\nthink a good way to dip one's toes into research literature is to dig\ninto papers related to systems that they already use. This could\ninvolve some aspect of a programming language, a library, or a\ndatabase that you've used to build something in the past.\n\nEvery software developer benefits from academic and industrial\nresearch. Research In Production is for those that want to know how.\n\n\\* \"System\" is a generic term. Programming languages are highlighted\nin the first rendition of this project, but this approach could just\nas easily be applied to any technological artifact.\n\n### But Papers We Love is already a thing!\n\n[Papers We Love](http://paperswelove.org/) is fantastic. Research In\nProduction shares its motivations in fostering community around\npublications, but with a narrower focus on publications that directly\nrelate to commonly-used software systems.\n\nIdeally this project would _complement_ PWL by organizing a subset of\nits literature by the systems that put it into practice.\n\n### Where do the lists come from?\n\nIf you know of a software project that leverages research topics in\nproduction systems, then it warrants a spot in this project.\n\nResearch In Production was seeded with content from existing lists put\ntogether by [Alex Denisov](https://github.com/AlexDenisov) and\n[Matt Warren](https://github.com/mattwarren/). I added\n[a list for a project that I used to work on](https://github.com/evnm/research-in-production/blob/master/finagle.md)\nand I encourage you to do the same.\n\n## Contributing\n\nSee\n[CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/evnm/research-in-production/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md).\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fevnm%2Fresearch-in-production","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fevnm%2Fresearch-in-production","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fevnm%2Fresearch-in-production/lists"}
