A\nhydrogen network reusing the existing gas network could not only help to supply\ndemand for low-emission fuels, but could also balance variations in wind and\nsolar energy across the continent and thus avoid power grid expansion. We pursue\nthis idea by varying the allowed expansion of electricity and hydrogen grids in\nnet-zero CO2 scenarios for a sector-coupled European energy system. With 181\nregions and 3-hourly time series, we capture transmission bottlenecks, the\nvariability of demand and renewable supply, and potentials for retrofitting gas\npipelines and developing geological hydrogen storage. We find that a hydrogen\nnetwork connecting regions with low-cost and abundant renewable potentials to\ndemand centers, electrofuel production and cavern storage sites reduces system\ncosts by up to  26 bn€/a (3.4%). Between 64% and\n69% of this network could reuse natural gas pipelines. While the expansion of\nboth networks together can achieve the largest cost savings of\n9.9%, the expansion of neither appears as essential in a net-zero\nsystem as long as higher costs can be accepted and flexibility options are\nenabled to manage grid bottlenecks.\n\n## Repository Structure\n\n- `configs` contains configuration files for PyPSA-Eur and PyPSA-Eur-Sec for different scenarios.\n- `notebooks` contains the Jupyter notebooks used for the evaluation of results.\n- `paper` contains the `.tex` files for the paper.\n- `workflows` contains the PyPSA-Eur, PyPSA-Eur, and technology-data workflows.\n\n## Installation and Usage\n\nClone the repository including its submodules:\n\n```sh\ngit clone --recurse-submodules git@github.com:fneum/spatial-sector\n```\n\nInstall the necessary dependencies using `conda` or `mamba`:\n\n```sh\nmamba env create -f workflows/pypsa-eur/envs/environment.yaml\n```\n\nNavigate into the main Snakemake workflow directory of PyPSA-Eur-Sec:\n\n```sh\ncd workflows/pypsa-eur-sec\n```\n\nTo run the scenarios of a particular configuration file (e.g. `configs/config.main.yaml`), run:\n\n```sh\nsnakemake -call --configfile ../../configs/config.main.yaml plot_summary\n```\n\nThis call requires a high-performance computing environment.\n\nPlease follow the documentation of [PyPSA-Eur](https://pypsa-eur.readthedocs.io) for more details.\n\n## License\n\nMIT","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Ffneum%2Fspatial-sector","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Ffneum%2Fspatial-sector","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Ffneum%2Fspatial-sector/lists"}
