It fills a similar role as matplotlib, but is less\nfocused on 2D plotting. It supports a variety of backends with\ndifferent capabilities and use cases, ranging from interactive\nvisualization in the desktop or jupyter notebooks to high-quality,\nstatic raytraced and vector images for publication.\n\n# Installation\n\nPlato is available on PyPI for installation via pip:\n\n```\n$ pip install plato-draw\n```\n\nYou can also install plato from source, like this:\n\n```\n$ git clone https://github.com/glotzerlab/plato.git\n$ # now install\n$ cd plato \u0026\u0026 python setup.py install\n```\n\n**Note**: Depending on which backends you want to use, there may be\nadditional steps required; see the section on interactive backends\nbelow.\n\n## Using Interactive Backends\n\nPlato supports a number of backends, each with its own set of\ndependencies. Getting the vispy backend working for both the desktop\nand jupyter notebook can be tricky. Make sure to check the official\n[vispy documentation](http://vispy.org/installation.html). We also\nkeep some advice\n[here](https://bitbucket.org/snippets/glotzer/nMg8Gr/plato-dependency-installation-tips)\nregarding particular known-good versions of dependencies for pip and\nconda.\n\n# Documentation\n\nThe documentation is available as standard sphinx documentation:\n\n```\n$ cd doc\n$ pip install -r requirements.txt\n$ make html\n```\n\nAutomatically-built documentation is available at\nhttps://plato-draw.readthedocs.io .\n\n# Examples\n\nSeveral usage examples are available.
