[Create one on GonkaGate](https://gonkagate.com/en?utm_source=github\u0026utm_medium=referral\u0026utm_campaign=claude_code_setup\u0026utm_content=readme_api_key_cta).\n\n## Overview\n\n`@gonkagate/claude-code` is for developers who already have local `Claude Code`\nand want to use it with GonkaGate without editing shell profiles, exporting\nlong env var blocks, or writing `.env` files by hand.\n\nUnder the hood it configures Claude Code to use GonkaGate's Anthropic-\ncompatible endpoint at `https://api.gonkagate.com`.\n\nIt does not install `Claude Code` itself. It configures an existing local\nClaude Code install.\n\nFor setup-style naming consistency, the alias\n`npx @gonkagate/claude-code-setup` runs the same installer.\n\nYou will be asked for:\n\n- your GonkaGate API key (`gp-...`) in a hidden interactive prompt\n- a model fetched from GonkaGate's live `/v1/models` response for that key\n- setup scope: `user` or `local`\n\nIf you choose `local` scope and `.claude/settings.local.json` is already tracked by git, the installer offers to stop tracking that file and continue, or switch to `user` scope instead.\n\nYou need:\n\n- local `Claude Code`\n- Node.js 18+\n- a GonkaGate API key\n\n## Model Source\n\nThe installer calls `GET https://api.gonkagate.com/v1/models` with your GonkaGate API key and uses that live response as the source of truth for model selection.\n\nNew or removed GonkaGate models do not require an installer update. You can skip the model prompt with `--model \u003cmodel-id\u003e`, but the id must be present in the live `/v1/models` response for your key.\n\n## What It Does\n\nThe tool writes Claude Code settings so you can keep running `claude` normally afterward.\n\nBy default it writes to:\n\n- `~/.claude/settings.json`\n\nIf you choose local scope, it writes to:\n\n- `.claude/settings.local.json`\n\nIt also:\n\n- preserves unrelated Claude Code settings\n- creates a backup before overwriting an existing settings file\n- writes settings files with owner-only permissions\n- writes backup files with owner-only permissions\n- adds `.claude/settings.local.json` and local backup files to `.git/info/exclude` for local setup inside a git repo\n- offers to stop tracking `.claude/settings.local.json` before local setup writes secrets into a file that was already tracked by git\n- refuses local setup if the target path traverses a symlinked path component, or if `.claude` / the local settings file is a symlink\n\n## Fixed GonkaGate Setup\n\nThese parts are intentionally fixed:\n\n- Base URL: `https://api.gonkagate.com`\n- Auth variable: `ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN`\n- Model choice: only from `GET https://api.gonkagate.com/v1/models` using your API key\n\nThis tool does not ask for a custom base URL and does not accept model IDs outside the live GonkaGate response for your key.\n\nThe selected model is written into all Claude Code model env vars used by this setup flow.\n\n## Verify\n\nAfter setup:\n\n1. If Claude Code was previously logged directly into Anthropic, run `claude auth logout`\n2. Start Claude Code normally with `claude`\n3. Run `/status`\n4.
