open source, scalable, cloud-based service for operating\n[top-level domains](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-level_domain) (TLDs). It\nis the authoritative source for the TLDs that it runs, meaning that it is\nresponsible for tracking domain name ownership and handling registrations,\nrenewals, availability checks, and WHOIS requests. End-user registrants (i.e.,\npeople or companies that want to register a domain name) use an intermediate\ndomain name registrar acting on their behalf to interact with the registry.\n\nNomulus runs on [Google Kubernetes Engine](https://cloud.google.com/kubernetes-engine)\nand is written primarily in Java. It is the software that\n[Google Registry](https://www.registry.google/) uses to operate TLDs such as .google,\n.app, .how, .soy, and .みんな. It can run any number of TLDs in a single shared registry\nsystem using horizontal scaling. To report issues or make contributions, use GitHub issues and pull\nrequests.\n\n## Capabilities\n\nNomulus has the following capabilities:\n\n*   **[Extensible Provisioning Protocol\n    (EPP)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Provisioning_Protocol)**: An\n    XML protocol that is the standard format for communication between\n    registrars and registries. It includes operations for registering, renewing,\n    checking, updating, and transferring domain names.\n*   **[DNS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System) interface**: The\n    registry provides a pluggable interface that can be implemented to handle\n    different DNS providers. It includes a sample implementation using [Google\n    Cloud DNS](https://cloud.google.com/dns/), as well as an RFC 2136 compliant\n    implementation that works with BIND. If you are using Google Cloud DNS, you\n    may need to understand its capabilities and provide your own\n    multi-[AS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_system_\\(Internet\\)) solution.\n*   **[Registration Data Access Protocol\n    (RDAP)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registration_Data_Access_Protocol)**:\n    A JSON API that returns structured, machine-readable information about\n    domain name ownership. It is essentially a newer version of WHOIS.\n*   **[Registry Data Escrow (RDE)](https://icannwiki.com/Data_Escrow)**: A daily\n    export of all ownership information for a TLD to a third party escrow\n    provider to allow take-over by another registry operator in the event of\n    serious failure. This is required by ICANN for all [new\n    gTLDs](https://newgtlds.icann.org/).\n*   **Premium pricing**: Communicates prices for premium domain names (i.e.,\n    those that are highly desirable) and supports configurable premium\n    registration and renewal prices. An extensible interface allows fully\n    programmatic pricing.\n*   **Billing history**: A full history of all billable events is recorded,\n    suitable for ingestion into an invoicing system.\n*   **Registration periods**: Qualified Launch Partner, Sunrise, Landrush,\n    Claims, and General Availability periods of the standard gTLD lifecycle are\n    all supported.\n*   **Brand protection for trademark holders (via\n    [TMCH](https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/about/trademark-clearinghouse/faqs))**:\n    Allows rights-holders to protect their brands by blocking registration of\n    domains using their trademark. This is required by ICANN for all new gTLDs.\n*   **Registrar support console**: A self-service web console that registrars\n    can use to manage their accounts in the registry system.\n*   **Reporting**: Support for required external reporting (such as [ICANN\n    monthly registry\n    reports](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/registry-reports),\n    [CZDS](https://czds.icann.org/), Billing and Registration Activity) as well\n    as internal reporting using [BigQuery](https://cloud.google.com/bigquery/).\n*   **Administrative tool**: Performs the full range of administrative tasks\n    needed to manage a running registry system, including creating and\n    configuring new TLDs.\n*   **Secure storage of cryptographic keys**: A keyring interface is\n      provided for plugging in your own implementation (see [configuration\n      doc](https://github.com/google/nomulus/blob/master/docs/configuration.md)\n      for details), and an implementation based on\n      [Google Cloud Secret Manager](https://cloud.google.com/security/products/secret-manager) is\n      available.\n*   **TPC Proxy**: Nomulus is built on top of the [Jetty](https://jetty.org/)\n    container that implements the [Jakarta Servlet](https://jakarta.ee/specifications/servlet/)\n    specification and only serves HTTP/S traffic. A proxy to translate raw TCP traffic (e.g., EPP)\n    to and from HTTP is provided.\n    Instructions on setting up the proxy\n    are [available](https://github.com/google/nomulus/blob/master/docs/proxy-setup.md).\n    The proxy can either run in a separate cluster and communicate to Nomulus public HTTP\n    endpoints via the Internet, or as a sidecar with the Nomulus image in the same pod and\n    communicate to it via loopback.\n\n## Additional components\n\nRegistry operators interested in deploying Nomulus will likely require some\nadditional components that need to be configured separately.\n\n*   A way to invoice registrars for domain name registrations and accept\n    payments. Nomulus records the information required to generate invoices in\n    [billing\n    events](https://github.com/google/nomulus/blob/master/docs/code-structure.md#billing-events).\n*   Fully automated reporting to meet ICANN's requirements for gTLDs.
