sponsor swag leftovers by the end of the hackathon.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nSwag leftovers can be distributed to hackers at the end of the closing ceremony.\n\n \n\n**Objective #2:**\n\nProvide hackers more reusable items. \n\n**Key Results:**\n\nMake the swag bag at least 80% eco-friendly.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nAsk sponsors for items like reusable plastic water bottles, reusable coffee cups, mugs, stainless steel straw.\n\nFor prizes, using reusable bags not gifts bags and limit/eradicate excessive tissue paper.\n\n## Food Waste Reduction\n**Objective #1:**\n\nReduce the amount of food and packages waste. \n\n**Key results:**\n\nHave a maximum of 3% food and package waste after every meal.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nDonate food leftovers to residence centers or communal student spaces within one hour after breakfast/lunch/dinner time to maintain the freshness of food.\n\nEnsure compost bins are available and visible for food waste.\n\nProvide maps of venue highlighting where the recycling/compost/garbage bins and water fountains are located. Because the location of the bins can change, we can keep an updated map in slack.\n\nOffer paper food takeaway containers when giving out food to avoid food waste, this will help reduce people throw food in the trash, by giving hackers the option to store and eat food at their own convenience. \n\nMicrowaves should be all around campus to help them reheat the food.\n\nGet condiments in bulk rather than in small packaging.\n\nEncourage and remind hackers to bring reusable water bottles\n\nGet at least 95% of hackers confirmed at least one week prior to finalize numbers with the Catering companies, including special requests due to dietary restrictions and food allergies. \n\nAdd double of the vegan, halal and gluten-free alternatives requested for last-minute hackers.\n\nExplain in opening ceremonies and registration package how and where to compost/recycle the materials that the hackathon is using\n\n \n\n**Objective #2:**\n\nIncrease the use of reusable utensils. \n\n**Key Result:**\n\nHave 95% use of reusable utensils. \n\n**Action Items:**\n\nAvoid use of straws, stir sticks, non-reusable containers, plastic packaging, etc.\n\nNotify the catering companies about our food waste reduction plan to encourage them to use reusable or biodegradable utensils and containers.\n\n## Supplies Reduction\n**Objective #1:**\n\nPurchase reusable and eco-labeled products that can be used for future events.\n\n**Key results:**\n\nKeep 70% of the supplies for next year, instead of throwing them away and buy new  ones in the future. \n\n**Action Items:**\n\nBorrow as many (office) supplies as possible.\n\nProvide reusable lanyards and ask hackers to return them for future events.\n\n \n\n**Objective #2:**\n\nPurchase sustainably produced apparel.\n\n**Key Results:**\n\n100% sustainably produced apparel.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nPurchase durable clothing\n\nPurchase clothes made from recycled materials\n\nAttempt to avoid polyester \n\n \n\n**Objective #3:**\n\nReduce waste of apparel from over ordering. \n\n**Key Results:**\n\nHave a maximum of 2% of apparel left over at the end of event. \n\n**Action Items:**\n\nAccurate count of the different sizes of apparel so there won’t be leftovers.\n\nDistribute leftover apparel to hackers. \n\n## Transportation\n**Objective:**\n\nReduce environmental footprint by cutting down carbon emissions. \n\n**Key results:**\n\nHave 80% of attendees report as carpooling or commuting.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nUse Facebook group and/or Slack channel to mention that there will be limited parking and maybe provide parking discount if carpooling with 3 or more hackers.\n\nProvide shuttle buses from centric places.\n\nProvide schedules of public transportation around campus, share links and common routes from campus.\n\nPut out post event surveys to collect information on how hackers commuted to the event. \n\n## Go paperless!\n**Objective:** \n\nOnly use digital communication.\n\n**Key results:**\n\nReduce printed handouts and documents by 100%.\n\n**Action Items:**\n\nKeep promotional materials digital, including the agenda and information documents.\n\nProvide clear digital maps of the campus to hackers and sponsors.\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fhackthevalley%2Fhackathon-sustainability-standard","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fhackthevalley%2Fhackathon-sustainability-standard","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fhackthevalley%2Fhackathon-sustainability-standard/lists"}
