It's built on top of the very fast\n[LuaJIT](http://luajit.org) runtime, uses [Gtk](http://www.gtk.org) for its\ninterface, and can be extended in either [Lua](http://www.lua.org) or\n[Moonscript](http://www.moonscript.org). It's known to work on Linux, but\nshould work on at least the \\*BSD's as well.\n\nIt is released as free software under the [MIT](http://opensource.org/licenses/MIT)\nlicense, with the source being available on [Github](https://github.com/howl-editor/howl).\n\nVisit [howl.io](http://howl.io) for installation instructions and documentation,\nand follow on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/howleditor) for updates.\n\n## Quick installation instructions\n\nThe home page contains more elaborate instructions, including pointers to\nexisting distribution packages, but below you'll find the basic instructions for\nhow to install Howl from source.\n\n### Build requirements\n\n- `wget`: For auto-downloading build dependencies.\n- `GTK+`: Version \u003e= 3, with development files (e.g. `libgtk-3-dev` on Debian\nbased system).\n- `C compiler`: Howl has a very small C core itself, and it embeds\ndependencies written in C.\n- `pkg-config`: Helper tool to find libraries on the system.\n\n### Build \u0026\u0026 install\n\nClone the repository or download and unpack a release. Cd into the `src`\ndirectory, and run `make \u0026\u0026 sudo make install`. The installed binary will be\nnamed `howl`.\n\n## License\n\nHowl is released under the MIT license (see the LICENSE.md file for the full\ndetails).\n\n## Contribute\n\nAny feedback, be it patches, feature request or bug reports, is most welcome.\n\nIf you want to provide patches, the preferred way of doing so would be as a pull\nrequest via GitHub, or as a pull request from some other Git server.
