Features\n\nOpen and navigate ZIP and TAR archives, folders, and individual files without extracting anything to disk first.\n\n**Built-in file format database** — Crush identifies forensically relevant formats by magic bytes and extension, and shows format name, platform, forensic relevance, and a link to the specification for every selected file, including formats without a dedicated viewer.\n\n**Integrity mode** — optional hashing for auditability: file/ZIP/TAR sources are hashed on open and exports generate a hash manifest (`crush-export-hashes.txt`). Toggle via the bottom-right status badge.\n\nSupported viewers (more planned):\n\n- SQLite / Database Viewer\n- Hex Viewer\n- Text Viewer (with syntax highlighting and encoding detection)\n- JSON Viewer (collapsible tree)\n- XML Viewer (collapsible tree)\n- Plist / BPlist Viewer\n- SEGB v1/v2 Viewer\n- ABX (Android Binary XML) Viewer\n- LevelDB Viewer (Chrome LevelDB / Android app databases)\n- Image Viewer\n- Media Viewer (audio/video)\n- Multi-Log Studio (multi-source log analysis with format auto-detection; Apple Unified Log / `.tracev3` / `.logarchive`, syslog, and more)\n- Protobuf Viewer (schema-less; optional schema decoding)\n- PDF text extraction (displays extracted text)\n- Realm Database Viewer (header, schema/class extraction, top-ref comparison, table/column data decoding)\n\n## Documentation\n\n→ [User Handbook](crush/docs/handbook.md)\n→ [Format Support \u0026 Parser Limitations](crush/docs/format-support.md)\n\n## Blog \u0026 Deep Dives\n\nTechnical write-ups on the crush viewers — forensic background, workflow, and what to look for:\n\n| Viewer | Post |\n|--------|------|\n| SQLite | [What Hides in the WAL — SQLite Forensics with crush](https://bebinary4n6.blogspot.com/2026/05/what-hides-in-wal-sqlite-forensics-with.html) |\n| RealmDB | [Object by Object — RealmDB Forensics with crush](https://bebinary4n6.blogspot.com/2026/05/object-by-object-realmdb-forensics-with.html) |\n| LevelDB | [Reading the CURRENT — LevelDB Forensics with crush](https://bebinary4n6.blogspot.com/2026/05/reading-current-leveldb-forensics-with.html) |\n| SEGB / Biome | [Beyond the C — SEGB and Biome Forensics with crush](https://bebinary4n6.blogspot.com/2026/05/beyond-c-segb-and-biome-forensics-with.html) |\n| Protobuf | [Reading Protobuf Wire Format Without a Map](https://bebinary4n6.blogspot.com/2026/06/reading-wire-protobuf-without-map.html) |\n\n## Screenshots\n\nAndroid ABX (Linux)\n![Android ABX (Linux)](crush/docs/pictures/example_android_lin_abx.png)\n\nAndroid Video (Linux)\n![Android Video (Linux)](crush/docs/pictures/example_android_lin_video.png)\n\nLoading Speed - How fast we can load from zips\n![Loading Speed](crush/docs/pictures/example_ios_lin_ingest_speed.png)\n\niOS SEGB (Windows)\n![iOS SEGB (Windows)](crush/docs/pictures/example_ios_win_segb.png)\n\niOS SQLite Summary (Windows)\n![iOS SQLite Summary (Windows)](crush/docs/pictures/example_ios_win_sqlite_summary.png)\n\nFormat Reference (Linux)\n![Format Reference (Linux)](crush/docs/pictures/example_lin_file_formats.png)\n\nIntegrity Mode (Linux)\n![Integrity Mode (Linux)](crush/docs/pictures/example_dark_forensic_mode_linux.png)\n\n## Install and Run\n\n### From source (recommended for development)\n\n1. Create a virtual environment\n```bash\npython -m venv .venv\nsource .venv/bin/activate\n```\n\n2. Install dependencies\n```bash\npython -m pip install --upgrade pip\npython -m pip install -e .\n```\n\n3. Download the Unified Log parser binaries (required for Apple `.tracev3` / `.logarchive` support)\n```bash\npython scripts/download_unifiedlog_binaries.py\n```\n\n4. Run Crush\n```bash\ncrush\n```\n\n### Alternative run command\n\n```bash\npython -m crush\n```\n\nIf you see missing Qt or media errors, install the system dependencies below.\n\n## System Dependencies\n\nSome Python packages require OS-level libraries on fresh machines.\n\n### Base GUI/Qt runtime (PySide6)\n\nThese are required for the Qt GUI to run correctly on Linux.\n\n- Debian/Ubuntu: `sudo apt-get install libgl1 libegl1 libxcb-xinerama0 libxkbcommon-x11-0`\n- Fedora: `sudo dnf install mesa-libGL mesa-libEGL libxcb libxkbcommon-x11`\n- Arch: `sudo pacman -S mesa libglvnd libxcb libxkbcommon-x11`\n- Windows: no additional packages required; if the app fails to start, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015-2022 (x64)\n- macOS: no additional packages required (bundled with the OS)\n\n### libmagic (for `python-magic`)\n\n`python-magic` depends on `libmagic` being present on the system.\n\n- Debian/Ubuntu: `sudo apt-get install libmagic1`\n- Fedora: `sudo dnf install file-libs`\n- Arch: `sudo pacman -S file`\n- macOS (Homebrew): `brew install libmagic`\n- Windows: no additional packages required\n\n### Qt Multimedia (for audio/video)\n\n`PySide6` uses system multimedia backends.\n\n- Debian/Ubuntu: `sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good`\n- Fedora: `sudo dnf install gstreamer1-plugins-base gstreamer1-plugins-good`\n- Arch: `sudo pacman -S gstreamer gst-plugins-base gst-plugins-good`\n- macOS: typically bundled with Qt; if media playback fails, install `gstreamer`\n- Windows: typically bundled with Qt; no additional packages required\n\n### Audio backend (PulseAudio)\n\nFor Linux audio playback, `libpulse` is commonly required by Qt Multimedia.\n\n- Debian/Ubuntu: `sudo apt-get install libpulse0`\n- Fedora: `sudo dnf install pulseaudio-libs`\n- Arch: `sudo pacman -S libpulse`\n\n## Acknowledgements\n\nThis project builds on the great work of the DFIR community. The following third-party modules by [CCL Solutions Group](https://github.com/cclgroupltd) are bundled:\n\n- [ccl_bplist](https://github.com/cclgroupltd/ccl-bplist) — Binary plist module (BSD 3-Clause)\n- [ccl_segb](https://github.com/cclgroupltd/ccl_segb) — SEGB (Significant Energy Bearer) module (MIT)\n- [ccl_leveldb](https://github.com/cclgroupltd/ccl-leveldb) — LevelDB / Chrome LevelDB module (MIT)\n\nApple Unified Log (`.tracev3` / `.logarchive`) parsing uses the [macos-UnifiedLogs](https://github.com/mandiant/macos-UnifiedLogs) `unifiedlog_iterator` binary by [Mandiant](https://github.com/mandiant) (Apache License 2.0). The binary is bundled automatically in portable builds. When running from source, run `scripts/download_unifiedlog_binaries.py` to download the platform binaries into `crush/bin/unifiedlog_iterator/` (they are git-ignored and never committed).\n\nParts of this software were developed with assistance from [Claude AI / Claude Code](https://claude.ai) by Anthropic.\n\n## Bugs and feature requests\n\nUse [GitHub Issues](https://github.com/kalink0/crush-forensics/issues).
