Development\n\n### Prerequisites\n\n- Node.js 20.19.4 (specified in `engines` field)\n- npm\n\n### Quick Start\n\n1. **Clone and install dependencies**\n\n```bash\ngit clone https://github.com/kitamersion/kita-browser-extension\ncd kita-browser-extension\nnpm install\n```\n\n2. **Environment setup**\n   Create a `.env` file from `env_template`. Set `APPLICATION_ENVIRONMENT` to:\n\n- `dev` - Uses browser local storage (for development)\n- `prod` - Uses production storage (for building extension)\n\n  **For AniList integration in development:**\n  1.  Open `scripts/get-anilist-token.html` in your browser\n  2.  Enter your AniList Client ID (get this from [AniList Developer Settings](https://anilist.co/settings/developer))\n  3.  Click the authorization link and approve the app\n  4.  Copy the redirect URL and paste it in the token extractor\n  5.  Add the extracted token to your `.env` file:\n      ```\n      ANILIST_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_token_here\n      ```\n\n3. **Development workflow**\n\n```bash\n# Start development mode with auto-rebuild (recommended)\nnpm run dev\n\n# Or for Firefox\nnpm run dev:firefox\n\n# Quick one-time build for testing\nnpm run dev:quick\n```\n\n4. **Load extension in browser**\n\n- Open Chrome and go to `chrome://extensions/`\n- Enable \"Developer mode\"\n- Click \"Load unpacked\" and select the `./dist` folder\n- **Development tip**: You only need refresh your page or click the refresh button in Chrome extensions page after changes, no need to re-import!\n\n### Available Scripts\n\n**Development:**\n\n- `npm run dev` - Full development mode with watch (Chrome)\n- `npm run dev:firefox` - Development mode for Firefox\n- `npm run dev:quick` - Quick build without watching\n- `npm run graphql:codegen:watch` - Watch GraphQL schema changes\n\n**Production:**\n\n- `npm run build` - Full production build\n- `npm run build:chrome` - Build Chrome manifest\n- `npm run build:firefox` - Build Firefox manifest\n\n**Development server (for testing components):**\n\n- `npm start` - Webpack dev server\n- `npm run start:live` - With hot reload\n\n**Testing:**\n\n- `npm test` - Run tests\n- `npm run test:watch` - Run tests in watch mode\n\n**Code quality:**\n\n- `npm run lint` - Run linting and formatting\n- `npm run prettier:fix` - Format code\n\n### Development Tips\n\n1. **First time setup:** Run `npm run dev` once to generate the initial build\n2. **Daily workflow:** Just hit refresh on the extension in Chrome after `npm run dev` is running\n3. **GraphQL changes:** The dev script automatically regenerates types\n4. **Manifest changes:** Auto-copied when files in `./ext/` change\n5. **Quick iterations:** Use `npm run dev:quick` for one-off builds\n6. **Debugging:** Source maps are enabled in development mode for easier debugging\n\n### Build Process Explained\n\nThe development build process:\n\n1. Generates GraphQL types from schema\n2. Copies extension files (manifest.json, icons) to `./dist`\n3. Builds source code with Webpack (watch mode)\n4. Watches for changes in `./ext/` folder and auto-copies them\n5.
