This repository will be left up in an archived state\nfor posterity, and to assist existing Fleet users.\n\nPlease refer to the FAQ below for additional information [including\nmigration options](#q-what-should-i-use-instead-of-fleet).\n\n## FAQ\n\n### Q: What was Kolide Fleet?\n\nKolide Fleet was an open-source Osquery Fleet Manager written in Go and Javascript.\n\n### Q: What does retiring entail?\n\nEffective immediately, Kolide will no longer promote, endorse,\nsupport, or update Fleet. Any infrastructure outside of Github\nsupporting downloads or packages will also be retired.\n\nSince we will not be updating Fleet with any security patches or\naccepting bug bounty reports, it is important that you find a\n[suitable alternative right\naway](#q-what-should-i-use-instead-of-fleet).\n\n### Q: Is Kolide retiring Kolide Launcher?\n\nNo. [Kolide Launcher](https://github.com/kolide/launcher) is a major\ncomponent of our SaaS product, and we fervently believe in keeping the\nendpoint agent technology open-source.\n\n### Q: Why is Kolide retiring Fleet?\n\nWe are proud and humbled by all of the organizations using Fleet\ntoday. We think it’s a great solution to monitor server-based\ninfrastructure using Osquery. We recognize many organizations depend\non Fleet so retiring it was not a decision we took lightly.\n\nSince 2019, Kolide has found success building a SaaS endpoint security\nproduct around the philosophy of User Focused Security. This\nphilosophy is about building a foundation of trust between the\nsecurity team and the end-users of a given organization.\n\nWhen Fleet is used to obtain visibility on end-user devices, it is not\nsoftware that enables an honest and accountable relationship between\nthe security team and the end-users who are subject to the data\ncollection Fleet enables.\n\nSpecifically, Fleet allows administrators to vacuum up large\nquantities of end-user data without providing those users with any\nvisibility or tools to understand or control that process. Fleet does\nnot hold security practitioners accountable for the data they collect\nor how it will be ultimately used. In fact, many folks reach out to\nus asking how to use Fleet and Osquery together to collect things like\nweb browser history, device geolocation, and other personal\ninformation from devices. These objectives are antithetical to our\ncompany’s values. At Kolide these values are non-negotiable and we no\nlonger want to enable software under our name and branding that\nenables those use-cases.\n\nWhile we could change Fleet to meet these ideals and be compatible\nwith our philosophy, we would rather invest that same energy and\nresources toward improving our SaaS app.\n\nGiven the facts above, we have decided it is in our best interest to retire\nthe project and thoroughly explain our rationale.\n\n### Q: Why retire Fleet now?\n\nKolide has not substantially contributed to Fleet for over 2 years.\nRecently, an active contributor reached out to let us know they were\nplanning on forking it and asked for our blessing. This recent\nreach-out caused us to re-evaluate if it’s something Kolide wants to\ncontinue to directly invest in or endorse.\n\nAfter going through that exercise, we determined that Fleet was built by a\ndifferent Kolide; one that embodied different values and had different goals.\nDue to the mismatch in ideals and the opportunity to distance ourselves from\nFleet, we have decided now is the best time to retire the project and let the\ncommunity decide on a suitable fork to follow.\n\n### Q: What should I use instead of Fleet?\n\n**Kolide no longer endorses the use of Fleet for monitoring end-user devices.**\n\nIf you are looking to get additional visibility on end-user devices\nand want to do it **honestly**, you should check out [Kolide\nK2](https://kolide.com). It’s a refreshing take on how to use\ntechnologies like Osquery and Slack to achieve the security team’s\ngoals while simultaneously respecting end-users and their privacy.\n\nIf you use Fleet to monitor servers and are looking for a direct\nmigration path https://github.com/fleetdm/fleet appears to be the\nfirst of many promising forks.\n\nWe will update this space with forks that best\nsupport that use case.\n\nAlso, since Fleet is open source under the permissive MIT license, you\nare of course free to fork it and build your own version. Our only ask\nis you do not associate Kolide or our branding as a means of promoting\nor endorsing any derivative of Fleet you create.\n\n\n### Q: Where is the fleet source code\n\nSecurity vulnerabilities have been reported since we formally retired\nFleet. As such, we have deleted the code. Older version can be found\nin the [commit history](https://github.com/kolide/fleet/commits/master)\nand the past [releases](https://github.com/kolide/fleet/releases).\n\n## Kolide SaaS\n\nWant to go directly to insights?\n\nTry our [osquery SaaS\nplatform](https://kolide.com/?utm_source=oss\u0026utm_medium=readme\u0026utm_campaign=fleet)\nproviding insights, alerting, fleet management and user-focused\nsecurity tools.
