Website\n===========\n\nThis is the code for the RSO website, found at https://www.rso-music.com/\n\nThe site shows data from Reddit, YouTube and Google Sheets that it fetches\nperiodically to generate static pages.\n\n\nSetup\n-----\n\nYou need Go installed. Run `go build` to build the binary `rso-projects`.\n\nTo run, you need API keys for Reddit and YouTube.\n\n### Reddit\n\nGo to https://old.reddit.com/prefs/apps/ and create a \"personal use script\".\nCreate a file named `agentfile` with the following contents:\n\n```\nuser_agent: \"graw:rso-projects:0.1 (by /u/\u003cyour reddit name\u003e)\"\nclient_id: \"\u003cput your client id\u003e\"\nclient_secret: \"\u003cput your client secret\u003e\"\nusername: \"\"\npassword: \"\"\n```\n\nNote that username and password stay empty, we only fetch public data.\n\n### YouTube\n\nGo to the Google Cloud Console to create a YouTube API key: https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/api/youtube.googleapis.com/credentials\n\nPut your API key in the `YOUTUBE_API_KEY` environment variable.\n\n\nRunning\n-------\n\nYou need to run the binary from the root of the repository, for example:\n\n```\nYOUTUBE_API_KEY=\u003cyour key\u003e ./rso-projects\n```\n\nIt will fetch data from Reddit and YouTube and will render `template.html` to\n`static/index.html`. All fetched data is also stored in JSON files in `data/`\nfor debugging and for development. After changing the template, run\n`./rso-projects -cached` to render from these data files (fast!) instead of\nre-fetching everyting.\n\nSet up your web server to serve from `static/`.\n\n\nHow does it work?\n-----------------\n\nData fetching happens in `data.go`. We fetch:\n\n- Recent posts with flairs \"Official\", \"Official Project\" and \"Approved\n  Project\" via a Reddit search.\n- The latest three weekly update threads, including comments, also via a\n  Reddit search.\n- All videos from the [\"RSO All Playlist\"](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAl3fvW4KndiZAQtPmFCUFD6nImDC89Gv) on YouTube.\n\nIn `projects.go`, there is code to find information from this data, including:\n- project start (= date of Reddit post)\n- project deadline (by searching the post for certain keywords and a date)\n- instruments that may be submitted for a project, by matching from a\n- pre-defined list of instruments\n  latest update from the weekly update thread, by looking for a comment that\n  contains a link to the original project post\n- the released video (for finished projects), by comparing longest common substrings\n\nAll this information is compiled in `htmlpage.go` and provided to\n`template.html` (via [Go templating][gotmpl]), which results in\n`static/index.html`. For the stats page (implemented in JavaScript), all this\ndata is also written to `static/projects.json`.\n\n[gotmpl]: https://golang.org/pkg/text/template/\n\nThe stats page uses a CSV export of the [all projects sheet][allpr] to\nassociate videos and to show older projects as well.
