an open source over-the-air (OTA) software updater for embedded Linux\ndevices. Mender comprises a client running at the embedded device, as well as\na server that manages deployments across many devices.\n\nThis repository contains a standalone tool that makes it much easier to work\nwith the [Mender server management APIs](https://docs.mender.io/apis/management-apis).\n\nThe goal with `mender-cli` is to simplify integration between the Mender server\nand cloud services like continuous integration (CI)/build automation.\n\nOver time `mender-cli` will be extended to simplify the most common use cases\nfor integrating the Mender server into other backend and cloud systems.\n\n\n## Getting started\n\nTo start using `mender-cli`, we recommend that you begin with the\n[documentation section to set up mender-cli](https://docs.mender.io/server-integration/using-the-apis#set-up-mender-cli).\n\n\n## Downloading the binaries\n\nYou can find the latest `mender-cli` binaries in the [Downloads page on Mender\nDocs](https://docs.mender.io/downloads#mender-cli).\n\n## Configuration file\n\nThe `mender-cli` tool supports having a custom configuration setup. For now it\nsupports the `username`, `password`, and `server` configuration parameters. The\nfile must be in the JSON format, and can be located in one of the following\ndirectories:\n\n* `/etc/mender-cli/.mender-clirc`\n* `$HOME/.mender-clirc`\n* `.` (The directory in which the binary is run from)\n\nExample configuration file:\n\n```json\n{\n    \"username\": \"foo@bar.com\",\n    \"password\": \"baz\",\n    \"server\"  : \"bar.com\"\n}\n```\n\n!!! Note: It is possible to override all configuration file parameters on the command line.\n\n## Autocompletion\n\nAutocompletion can be enabled for the `mender-cli` tool through one of two ways.\n\n1. `sudo make install-autocomplete-scripts`\n\nThis is the simplest option, and will automatically generate and install the\nauto-completion scripts for both `Bash` and `Zsh`, and install them into the\nappropriate directories. That is `Bash` autocompletion goes into the\n`/etc/bash_completion.d/` directory, and `Zsh` scripts (if `Zsh` is installed),\ngets installed into the `/usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions/` directory.\n\n2. Manually\n\n### Enabling Bash auto-complete manually\n\nThe `mender-cli` tool can be enabled to support shell autocompletion, like you\nare used to for your regular tools, like `git`, `cd`, etc. In order to enable\nthis functionality run the `mender-cli` tool with the `--generate-autocomplete`\nflag. Example:\n\n```console\nmender-cli --generate-autocomplete\n```\n\nThis will output the file `autocomplete.sh` in the `autocomplete` directory in\nthe directory the binary is run from, so it is recommended to run this from the\n`mender-cli` source directory, where this directory already exists.\n\nIn order to enable the functionality the current `Bash` shell has to pick up the\ncompletions (i.e., source it). This can be done in one of two ways:\n\n1. Copy the `./autocomplete/autocomplete.sh` file to `/etc/bash_completion.d/`,\n   where a new `Bash` shell will automatically source it on invocation.\n\n2. Keep the file where it is, and have each new login shell source the file as a\n   part of `.bashrc`. This means that `echo \"source\n   /path/to/mender-cli/autocomplete/autocomplete.sh\" \u003e\u003e ~/.bashrc` needs to be\n   present in your `Bash` config.\n\n### Enabling Zsh auto-complete manually\n\nThe `mender-cli` tool supports enabling `Zsh` support, just like [Bash\nauto-completion](#enabling-bash-auto-complete-manually).\n\nIn order to enable `Zsh` auto-completion do:\n\n```console\nmender-cli --generate-autocomplete\n```\n\nto generate the auto-completion script.\n\n```console\necho $FPATH\n```\n\nChoose one of the directories in the `$FPATH`, and then copy the\n`./autocomplete/autocomplete.zsh` script into this directory, and rename it to\n`_mender-cli`, and restart your shell. Now typing:\n\n```console\nmender-cli [Tab]\n```\n\nshould result in:\n\n```console\n$ mender-cli [Tab]\nartifacts  -- Operations on mender artifacts.\nlogin      -- Log in to the Mender server (required before other operation\n```\n\n## Contributing\n\nWe welcome and ask for your contribution.
