Indeed, Jack, once CEO of a website, himself admitted: \"apps \nhave distracted me from the power of the web.\" Ah, but was it (just) apps and \na market surface?\n\nOh, \"graceful degradation\"? \"Progressive enhancement\"? \"Mobile-first\"? \n\"Design-first\"? \"API-first?\" \"TDD\"? \"domain-driven design\" (or should these be \ncapitalized D's)? IoT\"? \"Captioning?\" \"Localization\"? \"BIPS\"? \n\"Smart\" contracts, \"smart\" that? \"[handshake wallets][handshake]\"? \"the \necological impact of hash-cracking\"? Is the browser war still on? \"timbl \ninvented what?!\" \"rms hates javascript!?\" How ever does one decide what to do \nin how things are going in the web of things, or the \"most hostile development \nenvironment imaginable\" (Douglas Crockford, programmer)?\n\nWhat other way would you define a \"dark age\" if not that a majority of our \nsemantic web of belief is inaccessible (even the apps too!), with vendors \nlocking-out widely available talent?\n\n## The State of Play\n\nLet's be frank, [Andy Clarke-style][clarke]: web design was and is [a mistake][mistake]. \nThe very \"stuff happening\" between \"you\" and \"I\", client and creator, is \ngrounded in metaphor: \"all memories are screen memories\"[3], and the screen is \nnothing like paper, I assure you. But you need to transact — and transform \nyour business, not (just) let somebody else mind it. Indeed, \"transformative\" \nis not (just) another [buzzword][buzz]. And all education is violence[1]. \nYou're not paying \"me,\" one who \"leverages\" an open source and/or free software movement, just to hit the \nmarket surface when [90% of the web is inaccessible][inaccessible]. [Mobile website \nspeeds have not increased in 10 years][needforspeed] yet our ISPs have improved \n\"our\" download and latency performances, you ask? As all the major developer \nteams in their Major Company [Developer Developer Developer Developer][dev4]\nShops have their own Way, as any \"tech recruiter\" is only authorized to say? \n(*career of 15 years going strong!, but what do I know?*)\n\n(We see you Comcast, SAP, VMWare, Dun \u0026 Bradstreet, Microsoft selling \npersonally identifiable data to ICE, advertising \"REST APIs\", not \"REST*ful*\"; \ni.e., \"transformative\", and hey, please articulate why [MUST][rfc2119] \nhypermedia control *not* be used in GraphQL again, for \"[conveyor-tube][tube]\" \nmessaging \"data APIs\"?) \n\nA regular tragedy of the commons, if you ask me. And who really asks anything \nabout anything anymore, all the Major Companies giving no feedback due to \ntheir security policies — lacking ODRL? GDPR? Even jazz was \"[conceived to be \nabout something][jazz]\"! They're all doing the \"best for the best customers with the best tools at the best times in the best SDLCs\"? \nBut then, [accessibility *is* security and privacy][privacy]; elsewhere: \nalmost none of it is built (\"buidl'd\"?) \"on\" \"transformative APIs\"[6]; that means no \n[sandwiches][swiber][15] for you! You're aware of who Jeff Bezos is, and how his \n[API Mandate][apimandate] has constrained your business \"validation\" logic's capabilities, hindered \ninterrelations among and between others in the web and its search engine \nresults pages and your peers, obscured and obfuscated the attributes, \nsemantics and meaning-making potential of your business -- to the point of \nseeming to house it in a digital time capsule whereof you set it and \"forget \nit\". Why should \"designers\" be giving humans *static web junk* like debris in \nspace, lacking any possibility of semiotic autopoiesis? Ah, we're all just \nslingin' \"clever\" poetic licenses in this wild, wild web, is it? How would you \nhonestly know, if not but for true belief and the right to ask about \"the \nterror of value\"[2]?\n\nYou're paying me because you want to show good faith *and* good will here on \nearth. We're not going to dance about secularization or its opposite. \n\nYou're not going to lecture me about your cultural religions nor political ableisms as a means to smuggle in \nBusiness Requirements you didn't think of until last minute. You're not going \nto tell me anything I say is \"simply unfair.\" You're not going to pay me (just) to solve \"your\" \"problem\", \nif for no other reason than that you know you need someone other than \nyourself to even articulate your problem. And you know I've been called \nnot nothing but other than \"articulate\". You're not suspicious of \"grifts\" \nor scams, for no other reason than what we know about how the empire of law codes \ncapital for everything we perceive in virtual stores and otherwise[15], from \ncans of soup to NFTs to our personas as products. You're not feeling \nintimidated, as you have no idea what it is like to make a living in \na web that is 90% inaccessible, a web where Roy Fielding's research \nhas been jacked. No, someone else being informed in historical and \npolitical facts of the distribution of ownership is not \"intimidating\" \nyou. You probably don't even have the language to communicate what \nor how you feel, and you know this society show has propped itself \nup on finding innocent victims to cry about, fancifully associating \nfreedom feelings with whatever or whomever it needs to invent to \n\"get the job done\". Well, now we know I am vetted by constituents \nof the W3C. You acknowledge standards and their technologies all \naround you: so now why are you coming just to kick me in the history \nwith a \"time to market\" mantra? We're people of and for good will \nas much as we are from good faiths, many of them. And now you know \nthat \"unconscious price deranges social value\"[3].\n\nIt's not (just) about code. You should be worried if your engineer \nor developer, web or full-stuck, cannot reason about complex things \nnor articulate without code in view, as if good programming is not \nabout design-first, data structures, and relationships, for \"beauty \nis the givenness of data.\"[4]\n\nAnd if you don't care if your engineers can articulate [the philosophy \nof the web][phil][5]? And you expect them to secure your business logic? \n\nDo you really want a website, if \"want is logically prior to need\"? \nOr if trust is logically prior to desire?\n\nAnd certainly I've said a bit here. \"You\" and \"I\" might even think \nthis document's style has broken with the original stylistic constraints \nlaid out by Clarke, in his rejection of legalese. You may not think \nthe neoclassical, [Sisyphean economy's formula][sisyphean][11], `P=R+W+I`, has anything \nto do with your bottom-line — \n\nBecause it's all (just) math, right? Software is eating the world[7], ya say?\n\nLet's not go about [misdocumenting][jazz] as if concern for \"everyday racial coding\"[8] \nand \"pattern discrimination\"[9] are just as much valid concerns, just as \nvaluable, as a game theory no one wishes to admit bit the dust long ago[10]. To say \nthe least, it's not all (just) about game theory, a world as a hare-hunt.\n\nBecause we're playfully serious, when we must be; maybe even reasonable in our \ngoals, and seriously playful when we can, \"you\" and \"I\" should hope.\n\nTell us again, like when we saw the earth floating in space for the first time[13], \nwhat did we take away when [Aaron Swartz][swartz] impressively took a stand for the \nfragility of knowledge, showing us the depth of our work to be done?\n\n```\n[1] Critique of Economic Reason. Brad Tabas.\n[14] Simply put: you should be able to View Source on a webpage (and even in \nnative apps, technically, if they would be a bit more open about all this, \nsince most of them are built using HTTP and other web technologies offered by \nthe W3C, anyway), then *see* the \"layered\" composition of an API response: \ntypically as it should be minimally composed of actions (capabilities), (link \nor \"relating\") relations, attributes or \"properties\" (as Amundsen notes; and \nagain, here, they are modal, contextual, etc., sometimes!), presentational \nmodalities of and for hypermedia control (think accessibility; see above!), and \nsome sense of *whose time it is* — maybe think of OWL-Time prefixing the \nstandard link relations' strings in the \u003clink\u003e tags viewable in the HTML \nsource code; or W3C mementos or W3C timegates, even! There is quite a bit to \nall this, and we haven't even mentioned the demands of cryptosystems, semantic \nhashing for speedy lookups, availability vs consistency, metastability and \n\"meta APIs\"!\n```\n\n[clarke]: https://stuffandnonsense.co.uk/projects/contract-killer/#contract\n[inaccessible]: https://abilitynet.org.uk/news-blogs/inaccessible-websites-keep-disabled-people-out-work-abilitynet-tells-government-taskforce\n[mistake]: http://motherfuckingwebsite.com/\n[buzz]: https://roy.gbiv.com/untangled/2008/rest-apis-must-be-hypertext-driven\n[apimandate]: https://nordicapis.com/the-bezos-api-mandate-amazons-manifesto-for-externalization/\n[phil]: https://www.w3.org/community/philoweb/2014/01/15/syllogism/ \n[handshake]: https://github.com/kyokan/bob-wallet\n[needforspeed]: https://www.nngroup.com/articles/the-need-for-speed/\n[sisyphean]: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/314687329_The_Sisyphean_Economy\n[dev4]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhh_GeBPOhs\n[privacy]: https://www.boia.org/blog/accessibility-is-privacy-and-security\n[swartz]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Swartz\n[rfc2119]: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2119\n[tube]: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0020025504002385\n[jazz]: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/32325-tri-axium-writings-excerpt-vol-1-world-music/\n[swiber]: https://github.com/kevinswiber/siren\n","funding_links":[],"categories":[],"sub_categories":[],"project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fnerdfiles%2Fproposal-planning","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fnerdfiles%2Fproposal-planning","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fnerdfiles%2Fproposal-planning/lists"}
