(v3.23pre 2002/06/30)\n\nCan be used to create mail-servers, mailing lists, sort your incoming mail\ninto separate folders/files (real convenient when subscribing to one or more\nmailing lists or for prioritising your mail), preprocess your mail, start\nany programs upon mail arrival (e.g. to generate different chimes on your\nworkstation for different types of mail) or selectively forward certain\nincoming mail automatically to someone.\n\nProcmail can be used:\n\t- and installed by an unprivileged user (for himself only).\n\t- as a drop in replacement for the local delivery agent /bin/mail\n\t  (with biff/comsat support).\n\t- as a general mailfilter for whole groups of messages (e.g. when\n\t  called from within sendmail.cf rules).\n\nThe accompanying formail program enables you to generate autoreplies, split up\ndigests/mailboxes into the original messages, do some very simple\nheader-munging/extraction, or force mail into mail-format (with leading From\nline).\n\n----------------------\n\nWe made the utmost effort to make procmail as robust as any program can be\n(every conceivable system error is caught *and* handled).\n\nSince procmail is written entirely in C, it poses a very low impact\non your system's resources (under normal conditions, when you don't\nstart other programs/scripts from within it, it is faster and more\nrobust than the average /bin/mail you have on your system now).\n\nProcmail was designed to deliver the mail under the worst conditions\n(file system full, out of swap space, process table full, file table full,\nmissing support files, unavailable executables; it all doesn't matter).\nShould (in the unlikely event) procmail be unable to deliver your mail\nsomewhere, the mail will bounce back to the sender or reenter the mailqueue\n(your choice).\n\nFor a more extensive list of features see the FEATURES file.\n\n----------------------\n\nHowever, as with any program, bugs cannot be completely ruled out.  We\ntested the program extensively, and believe it should be relatively bug\nfree.
