[Limitations - OS compatibility, etc.](#limitations)\n\n## Overview\n\nFacts (and a module) for identifying information about a system.\n\n## Module Description\n\nThis module provides information about a node by breaking apart a structured\nhostname into usable facts. If the hostname is, or could not be\nstructured, the module provides a mechanism for writing an informational file\nthat will be read by facter on the next run.\n\nFor the facts to run on the agents, `pluginsync` must be enabled.\n\n## Usage\n\nThe module will provide 2 facts (`cluster_name` and `node_number`) from a\nstructured hostname that help identify the system (we had hiera in mind when\nwriting this).\n\nThe general hostname structure we use is\n`[application name]-[tier]-[node number]`. The `cluster_name` fact is based on\napplication-name-tier, and the `node_number` fact is simply the node_number.\n\nIf the hostname isn't structured, the module can write out a file, the\ncontents of which will be read in lieu of the hostname to generate the 2 facts.\n\nTo manage the file, the class can be declared as\n\n```puppet\nclass { 'system_role':\n  application =\u003e 'test-application',\n  tier        =\u003e 'prod',\n  node_number =\u003e 0,\n}\n```\n\n## Limitations\n\nThis module was developed and tested on Linux systems.\n\nThe concept used here is very simple, and can likely be translated to work\non other systems incredibly easily.\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fpcfens%2Fpuppet-system_role","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fpcfens%2Fpuppet-system_role","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fpcfens%2Fpuppet-system_role/lists"}
