I won't ask every single question, and neither should you. Life is too short.\n\nThis was, at the beginning, an aside to [this article](https://thevaluable.dev/find-best-software-developer-job/), on my blog. It grew as the time went by.\n\nSome questions don't necessarily reveal what I want to hear, and it's on purpose. To me, it's where things can go eerie quickly.\n\n## Position\n\n* If you hire me, what would be my immediate responsibilities?\n\n## People\n\n### Company Culture\n\n* How would you describe the company culture?\n* How do you know if a developer is productive and valuable for the company?\n* What's the balance between firefighting and project work?\n* Do you think that soft skills (like communication, time management, or being able to adapt) are more important than technical skills?\n* What do you do avoid developer turnover?\n* Do you think diversity matters in your teams?\n* How do you ensure diversity in your team?\n\n### Control \u0026 Micro Management\n\n* Is every developer allowed to deploy in production?\n* How do you understand code ownership?\n* Are there any performance reviews?\n\n### Training \n\n* Do you allocate resources for employee training?\n\n### Feedback\n\n* Do you have any established feedback process (1-to-1) between managers and developers? \n    * Between the developers themselves? \n    * Between the teams?\n\n## Technologies\n\n* What's the tech stack of your codebase?\n* What do you use on the infrastructure level?\n* Why do you use `\u003cinsert-the-technology-they use\u003e`?\n* Can developers choose their development environments (OS, computer, IDE)?\n\n## Business\n\n* Why are you hiring?\n* What is the vision of the company?\n* How will the company look like in 5 years? \n* Do you focus on a percise target demographic?\n* How do you get feedback from you users?\n* What are the biggest challenges your business is facing?\n* Are there domain experts who can explain some aspect of the business to the developers?\n\n## Teams\n\n* How many developer teams do you have?\n* How may developers do you have in each team?\n* Do you have product managers? Product owners?\n* Are the developer teams autonomous?\n* Do you have cross-functional teams?\n* Are developers usually working alone on their projects?\n* How do developers share knowledge in the team?\n\n## Processes\n\n### Agile\n\n* Do you use SCRUM? Can you describe the process?\n* Do you use Kanban? \n* What do you think about pair programming? Is it a common practice in the company?\n* What do you think about code review? Is it a common practice in the company?\n\n### Tests \n\n* Are you writing unit tests / functional tests / integration tests ... ?\n* What do you think about TDD? Is it a common practice in the company?\n\n### Documentation\n\n* What does good documentation mean to you? \n* Are the codebases well documented?\n* Are the features in the applications you're building well documented?\n\n### CI / CD\n\n* Do you have a CI pipeline?\n* Do you do Continuous Deployment (CD)?\n* How often do you deploy in production?\n* What do you prefer: small tickets you directly deploy in production when they're done, or bigger tickets?\n\n### Requirements\n\n* Who is writing the requirements for new features?\n* Do you have kickup meetings with domain experts, managers, and developers, when you want to add a new functionality?\n* Is it possible, for developers, to change the requirements? \n\n## Quality\n\n* Are you aware of your application's MTTR (Mean Time to Restore), the time you need on average to fix problems in production?\n* Do you have a QA team?\n* Does the QA team test manually, or do they run automated tests?\n* Do you have agile ceremonies, like daily stand up?\n\n## Working Place\n\n* Do you allow home office?\n* Do you allow remote work?\n* Do you work in an open office?\n* Are developers isolated or is everybody in the same offices?\n* Can I visit the offices?\n\n## Schedule \n\n* Are the work hours flexible?\n\n## Deadlines\n\n* Who schedules the deadlines? How?\n* Are estimations considered as hard deadlines?\n* Is it possible to change the scope of the tasks if it's clear that the deadlines are too short?\n* Do you think a \"healthy\" amount of pressure on developers is necessary for them to do their best work?\n\n## Legacy Systems and Complexity\n\n* Do you consider part of your codebase as legacy? Why?\n* Do you have some practices or processes to avoid technical debt?\n* Does the management know the cost of complexity in the codebase?\n* How do you reduce the entropy in your codebase?\n\n## Holidays\n\n* How many days of vacation do we have?\n* Is it possible to have unpaid sabbatical?
