prmana?\n\nSSH keys get copied, shared, and never rotated. When someone leaves, finding all their access is archaeology. Corporate MFA stops at the browser — you need it for email but not for root on production.\n\n`prmana` bridges this gap by bringing OIDC (the same protocol behind \"Sign in with Google/Microsoft/Okta\") to Linux PAM, with DPoP token binding to prevent token theft.\n\n### Why teams try it\n\n- **Kill static SSH keys** without forcing a full access platform rollout\n- **Keep direct-to-host SSH** instead of routing everything through a proxy\n- **Reuse your existing IdP** (Keycloak, Okta, Azure AD, Auth0, Google) for Linux login\n- **Get proof-of-possession** with DPoP — not just bearer-token login\n- **Stay Linux-native** with PAM at the host boundary\n- **Start small** on a few hosts before deciding whether you need more\n\n### What makes it different\n\nMost alternatives fall into one of three buckets:\n\n- **Access platforms** that introduce a proxy, gateway, or managed control plane\n- **SSH certificate systems** that add a CA and cert lifecycle layer\n- **Simpler PAM/OIDC modules** that provide SSO but not strong proof-of-possession\n\n`prmana` takes a different path: OIDC-backed login directly at the Linux host, with DPoP-bound authentication for stronger token handling. No gateway. No SSH CA. No static keys.\n\n### What it is not\n\n`prmana` is not a session recording platform, a universal infrastructure access proxy, or a full privileged-access management suite. It is a focused tool for SSH login.\n\n---\n\n## How It Works\n\n```\n User's Machine Linux Server\n ┌─────────────────────┐ ┌─────────────────────┐\n │ prmana-agent │ SSH │ sshd │\n │ ┌───────────────┐ │ ──────────────▶ │ ┌───────────────┐ │\n │ │ OIDC token │ │ │ │ PAM module │ │\n │ │ + DPoP proof │ │ │ │ (pam_prmana) │ │\n │ └───────────────┘ │ │ └───────────────┘ │\n └─────────────────────┘ └─────────────────────┘\n │ │\n ▼ ▼\n ┌─────────────────────┐ ┌─────────────────────┐\n │ Identity Provider │ │ Token validation │\n │ (Keycloak/Okta/ │ │ + DPoP verify │\n │ Azure AD/Auth0) │ │ + JWKS cache │\n └─────────────────────┘ └─────────────────────┘\n```\n\n1. **`prmana-agent`** on the user's machine acquires an OIDC token from your IdP (device flow or auth code + PKCE)\n2. The agent generates a DPoP proof binding the token to an ephemeral key pair\n3. On SSH connection, the server's **PAM module** validates the token signature, issuer, audience, expiration, and DPoP binding\n4. If validation passes and the username maps to a local account (via SSSD), authentication succeeds\n\n### Key Components\n\n| Component | Purpose |\n|-----------|---------|\n| `prmana-core` | Shared OIDC discovery and JWKS primitives |\n| `pam-prmana` | PAM module — token validation, DPoP verification, break-glass |\n| `prmana-agent` | Client-side agent — token acquisition, DPoP proof generation |\n\n### Hardware Key Support\n\nDPoP proofs can be bound to hardware security keys for stronger assurance:\n\n- **Software signer** — ephemeral P-256 key pair (default)\n- **YubiKey** — PKCS#11 via `--features yubikey`\n- **TPM 2.0** — platform TPM via `--features tpm` (Linux)\n\n---\n\n## Quick Start\n\n### Prerequisites\n\n- A Linux server with OpenSSH and PAM\n- An OIDC identity provider (Keycloak, Okta, Azure AD, Auth0, Google)\n- Rust toolchain for building from source\n\n### Build\n\n```bash\ncargo build --workspace\n```\n\n### Install\n\n```bash\n# Install the PAM module\nsudo cp target/release/libpam_prmana.so /lib/security/pam_prmana.so\n\n# Install the agent\ncp target/release/prmana-agent ~/.local/bin/\n\n# Configure\nsudo cp examples/policy.yaml /etc/prmana/policy.yaml\n# Edit policy.yaml with your issuer URL and client ID\n```\n\n### Login\n\n```bash\n# On the client machine\nprmana-agent login\n\n# Then SSH normally\nssh user@server\n```\n\nSee the [installation guide](docs/installation.md) for detailed setup including IdP configuration, SSSD integration, and break-glass access.\n\n---\n\n## Documentation\n\n| Guide | Description |\n|-------|-------------|\n| [Installation](docs/installation.md) | Full setup guide |\n| [PAM Integration](docs/pam-integration.md) | PAM module configuration |\n| [Security Guide](docs/security-guide.md) | Hardening and threat model |\n| [Hardware Key Setup](docs/hardware-key-setup.md) | YubiKey and TPM configuration |\n| [Break-Glass](docs/break-glass-validation.md) | Emergency access procedures |\n| [Keycloak Reference](docs/keycloak-dpop-reference.md) | Keycloak DPoP setup |\n| [Entra ID Setup](docs/entra-setup-guide.md) | Azure Entra ID configuration |\n| [Community Testing](docs/community-testing-guide.md) | Testing on various platforms |\n| [Threat Model](docs/threat-model.md) | STRIDE model and residual risks |\n| [Competitive Threat Surface](docs/competitive-threat-surface.md) | Head-to-head security comparison vs alternatives (fact-checked against primary sources) |\n\n### Architecture Decision Records\n\nDesign decisions are documented in [docs/adr/](docs/adr/).\n\n---\n\n## Contributing\n\nSee [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) for development setup and guidelines.\n\n```bash\n# Run tests\ncargo test --workspace\n\n# Lint\ncargo clippy --workspace -- -D warnings\n\n# Format\ncargo fmt --all\n```\n\n---\n\n## Community\n\nWe'd love your feedback — questions, ideas, bug reports, or just sharing how you're using prmana.\n\n- [GitHub Discussions](https://github.com/prodnull/prmana/discussions) — ask questions, share ideas\n- [Issues](https://github.com/prodnull/prmana/issues) — bug reports and feature requests\n\n---\n\n## Maintained By\n\nBuilt by [Chiradeep Chhaya](https://www.linkedin.com/in/chiradeepchhaya/), cybersecurity architect focused on identity and access management for production infrastructure.\n\nAll [releases are signed](SECURITY.md#binary-verification) with Sigstore (keyless) and GPG. Getting locked out of servers because your IdP is down is a catastrophic failure mode.\n\n---\n\n## The Name\n\n**Pramana** (Sanskrit: प्रमाण, *pramāṇa*) means \"proof\" and \"means of knowledge\" — the classical Indian epistemological framework for how you know something is true. The six pramanas are the valid means by which accurate knowledge is acquired: direct perception, inference, testimony, comparison, postulation, and proof by absence.\n\nFor this project, the connection is literal: DPoP is a pramana — cryptographic proof-of-possession, not just a bearer token asserting identity.\n\n---\n\n## License\n\nApache-2.0.
