What is Claws Mail?\n--------------------------\n\nClaws Mail (previously known as Sylpheed-Claws) is a lightweight and\nhighly configurable email client and news reader based on the GTK+\nGUI toolkit, it runs on the X Window System.\n\nClaws Mail is free software distributed under the GNU GPL.\n\nTo run Claws Mail use 'claws-mail' on the command line.\n\nWhen claws-mail is executed for the first time a configuration\n'Wizard' will appear prompting you for the minimum information\nnecessary to create a new account.\n\n\n2. Plugins\n----------\n\nClaws Mail' capabilities are extended by plugins. It comes with\nthe following plugins included, all of which are built automatically\nif the required libraries are present.\n\nPlugins are installed in $PREFIX/lib/claws-mail/plugins/\nand have a suffix of '.so'\nTo load a plugin go to '/Configuration/Plugins' and click\nthe 'Load Plugin' button.\nSelect the plugin that you want and click 'OK'\n\nAll plugin preferences can be found under\n'/Configuration/Preferences/Plugins/'.\n\n  o ACPI Notifier\n    Notifies of new mail via the mail LED available on some laptops. The \n    LED can be set to blinking or on states when new mail is received. \n    Appropriate kernel modules have to be loaded first for this plugin to \n    work. Laptops supported are from ACER (acerhk and acer_acpi modules), \n    ASUS (asus_laptop and asus_acpi), IBM (ibm_acpi), Lenovo (tm_smapi) \n    and Fujitsu (apanel) manufacturers.\n\n  o Address Keeper\n    Saves mail addresses typed in the 'To', 'Cc' or 'Bcc' fields of \n    outgoing messages to a designated folder in the address book. \n    Addresses are saved only if not already present in the address book.\n\n  o Archiver\n    Archives mail folders using libarchive library. Folders can be archived \n    with or without compression (ZIP, GZIP or BZIP2) and also in several \n    formats (TAR, SHAR, PAX or CPIO).\n    Libarchive is available from http://www.libarchive.org/.\n\n  o Attachment Remover\n    Selectively removes attachments from messages. Messages are permanently \n    modified by using this feature, so be careful!\n\n  o Attachment Warning\n    Warns the user of possibly forgotten attachments when some keywords \n    are found in the outgoing messages. False positives (being warned when \n    no attachment is realy needed) exist, but some configuration options \n    can help to reduce their probability.\n\n  o Bogofilter\n    Enables the scanning of incoming mail received from a POP,\n    IMAP, or LOCAL account using Bogofilter. It can optionally\n    delete mail identified as spam or save it to a designated folder.\n    Bogofilter is a pure Bayesian filter, therefore it has better\n    speed performance than SpamAssassin but might catch less spam.\n    Bogofilter is available from http://bogofilter.sourceforge.net/.\n \n  o BSFilter\n    Checks all messages received from IMAP, POP or local accounts using \n    BSFilter, a bayesian spam filter program, which has to be installed \n    locally. Messages identified as spam can be deleted or saved to a \n    designated folder. \n    Bsfilter is available from http://sourceforge.jp/projects/bsfilter/.\n\n  o Clamd\n    Uses the Clam AntiVirus in daemon mode to scan received messages from \n    IMAP, POP or local accounts. Scanning is done through a socket to the \n    daemon, so it has to be previously configured to allow this. \n    Clam AntiVirus is available from http://www.clamav.net/.\n\n  o Dillo\n    Uses the Dillo browser (http://www.dillo.org) to render HTML mails\n    and HTML parts of multipart messages. Dillo is started with\n    special options to embed its window inside Claws Mail's message\n    view and to render the HTML safely. If required, remote content\n    can be also retrieved.\n\n  o Fancy\n    Renders HTML mails and HTML parts of multipart messages using the\n    GTK+ port of the WebKit library. External content is blocked by\n    default (including images) to avoid remote tracking, but can be\n    enabled either globally or just on the displayed message. The GTK+\n    WebKit is available from http://trac.webkit.org/wiki/WebKitGTK/.\n\n  o Fetchinfo\n    Modifies downloaded messages and inserts special headers containing \n    some download information: UIDL, Claws Mail account name, POP server, \n    user ID and retrieval time. These headers can be used later for more \n    elaborate filtering or processing rules.\n\n  o GData\n    Includes your Gmail account contacts in the list generated for \n    Tab-address completion on compose window, using the GData library.\n    Gdata library is available from https://live.gnome.org/libgdata/.\n\n  o Libravatar\n    Displays sender avatars from https://www.libravatar.org/, from own\n    sender's domain if enabled or even an automatically generated one.\n\n  o MailMbox\n    Handles mailboxes in Mbox format using the libEtPan! library. Mbox \n    files can be added to the folder tree and used like regular mailboxes.\n    LibEtPan! is available from http://www.etpan.org/.\n\n  o Managesieve\n    Manage sieve filters on a server using the ManageSieve protocol.\n\n  o Newmail\n    Writes a header summary to a log file for each mail received after \n    sorting. The file for the summary is ~/Mail/NewLog.\n\n  o Notification\n    Provides various ways of notifying the user of new and unread email. \n    Current methods include: a banner, a popup window, a user command, \n    a message to a LCD daemon, a system tray icon and an indicator icon.\n    Sound notifications are also possible through libcanberra. Each method \n    can be customized in detail through the plugin preferences.\n    Indicator library is available from https://launchpad.net/libindicator/\n    and libcanberra from http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/libcanberra/.\n\n  o Perl\n    Extends the filtering possibilities of Claws Mail. Provides a Perl 5 \n    interface to Claws Mail's filtering mechanism, allowing the use of full \n    Perl power in email filters. A conversion script is provided to \n    translate user rules into perl rules suitable for this plugin. \n    Perl is available from http://www.perl.org/.\n\n  o PDF Viewer\n    Displays Portable Document Format (PDF) and PostScript attachments \n    within the message view using Poppler. PostScript attachments are \n    converted to PDF on the fly by the 'gs' tool, which has to be installed \n    first. The 'gs' tool is available from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/.\n    The Poppler library is available from http://poppler.freedesktop.org/.\n\t\n  o PGP/Core\n    Handles core PGP functions and is required by the PGP/Inline\n    and PGP/MIME plugins.\n    Uses GnuPG/GPGME, ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gpgme/.\n\n  o PGP/inline\n    Handles inline PGP signed and/or encrypted mails. You can\n    decrypt mails, verify signatures or sign and encrypt your\n    own mails. Uses GnuPG/GPGME, ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gpgme/.\n\n  o PGP/MIME\n    Handles PGP/MIME signed and/or encrypted mails. You can\n    decrypt mails, verify signatures or sign and encrypt your\n    own mails. Uses GnuPG/GPGME, ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gpgme/.\n\n  o Python\n    Provides Python scripting access to Claws Mail functions. A testing \n    console is also featured. Scripts can be saved to specific folders \n    for automatic loading on startup or being available as new menu items \n    under the '/Tools/Python scripts' menu. \n    Python is available from http://python.org/.\n\n  o RSSyl\n    Creates mailboxes where newsfeeds in RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 or Atom format \n    can be added. Each newsfeed will create a folder with the appropriate \n    entries, fetched from the web. You can read them, and delete or keep \n    old entries.\n\n  o S/MIME\n    Handles S/MIME signed and/or encrypted mails. You can decrypt mails, \n    verify signatures or sign and encrypt your own mails.\n\n  o SpamAssassin\n    Scans incoming mail received from a POP, IMAP or LOCAL account using \n    SpamAssassin. It can optionally delete mail identified as spam or save \n    it to a designated folder. \n    SpamAssassin is available from http://spamassassin.apache.org/.\n\n  o Spam Report\n    Reports spam messages to online spam harvesting sites. Sites suported \n    are http://www.signal-spam.fr/ and http://www.spamcop.net/. The Debian \n    mailing list spam nomination system is also supported.\n\n  o TNEF Parser\n    Decodes attachments with 'application/ms-tnef' MIME type (also known \n    as \"winmail.dat\" files) in Claws Mail, using the ytnef library. \n    Decoded parts can be saved to files.\n    The ytnef library is available from http://ytnef.sourceforge.net/.\n\n  o VCalendar\n    Displays vCalendar messages. Only the meeting subset of the vCalendar \n    format is currently supported, which includes planning, sendding and \n    receiving invitations and answering them. Public calendar (WebCal) \n    subscriptions, free/busy information export/import and reminding of \n    events is also supported.\n    \n\nAdditonal plugins can be found here:\nhttps://www.claws-mail.org/plugins.php\n\n\n3. Actions\n----------\n  The \"actions\" feature is a convenient way for the user to launch external \n  commands to process a complete message file including headers and body or \n  just one of its parts. It allows also the use of an external command to \n  filter the whole text or just a selected part in the message window or in \n  the compose window. This is a generic tool that allows to do any uncommon \n  actions on the messages, and thus extends the possibilities of Claws Mail. \n  For example, Claws Mail does not include the rot13 cyphering algorithm \n  popular in some newsgroups. It does not support uuencoded messages. As \n  all these features can be handled by external programs, the actions \n  provide a convenient way to use them from the menu bar.\n\n  a. Usage\n  --------\n\n  To create a new action, go to Configuration -\u003e Actions.... The \"Action\n  Creation\" dialog offers to enter the Menu name that will trigger the \n  command. The created menu will be found in the Tools -\u003e Actions submenu. \n  By inserting a slash / in the menu name, you create a submenu.\n\n  The command is entered in the Command line entry. Note that Claws Mail\n  stores every single email in a separate file. This allows to use the \n  following syntax for the command:\n\n    * %f denotes the file name of the selected message. If you selected more\n\t than one, then the command will be launched for each message with \n\t the appropriate file name\n    * %F denotes the list of the file names of the selected message. If only\n\t one message is selected, this amounts to %f, but if more messages \n\t are selected, then the command will be launched only once with the \n\t list of the file names. (You can use both %f and %F in one command: \n\t then the command will be launched for each selected message with \n\t the name of this message and with the list of all selected \n\t messages. I did not find a practical example for this.)\n    * %p denotes the current selected message part of a multipart message. \n\t The part is decoded accordingly. If the message is not a multipart \n\t message, it denotes the message body.\n    * Prepending \u003e: this will allow you to send to the command's standard \n\t input a text that you will enter in a dialog window.\n    * Prepending *: this will allow you to send to the command's standard \n\t input a text that you will enter in a dialog window. But in \n\t contrast to prepending \u003e, the entered text is hidden (useful when \n\t entering passwords).\n    * Appending an ampersand \u0026: this will run the command asynchronously. \n\t That means \"fire and forget\". Claws Mail won't wait for the\n\t command to finish, nor will it catch its output or its error\n\t messages.\n    * Prepending the vertical bar | (pipe-in): this will send the current \n\t displayed text or the current selected text from the message view \n\t or the compose window to the command standard input. The command \n\t will silently fail if more than one message is selected.\n    * Appending the vertical bar | (pipe-out): this will replace the current \n\t displayed text or the current selected text from the message window\n\t or the compose window by the command standard output. The command\n\t will silently fail if more than one message is selected.\n\n  Note: It is not possible to use actions containing %f, %F or %p from the\n  compose window. \n\n  When a command is run, and unless it is run asynchronously, Claws Mail\n  will be insensitive to any interaction and it will wait for the command to \n  finish. If the command takes too long (5 seconds), it will popup a dialog \n  window allowing to stop it. This dialog will also be displayed as soon as\n  the command has some output: error messages or even its standard output \n  when the command is not a \"pipe-out\" command. When multiple commands are \n  being run, they are run in parallel and each command output is separated \n  from the outputs of the others.\n\n  a. Examples\n  -----------\n\n  Here are some examples that are listed in the same syntax as used for \n  storing the actions list. You can copy and past the definition in your \n  ~/.claws-mail/actionsrc file (exit Claws Mail before). The syntax\n  is very simple: one line per action, each action contains the menu name\n  and the command line separated by a colon and a space \": \"\n\n  Purpose:\trot13 cyphering\n  Definition:\tRot13: |tr a-zA-Z n-za-mN-ZA-M|\n  Details:\tThis will apply the rot13 cyphering algorithm to the \n\t\t(selected) text in the message/compose view.\n\n  Purpose:\tDecoding uuencoded messages\n  Definition:\tUUdeview: xdeview %F\u0026\n  Details:\txdeview comes with uudeview. If an encoded file is split in \n\t\tmultiple messages, just select them all and run the command.\n\n  Purpose:\tDisplay uuencoded image\n  Definition:\tDisplay uuencoded: uudec %f\u0026\n  Details:\tDisplays uuencoded files. The uudec[1] script can be found in \n\t\tthe 'tools' directory of the distribution package.\n \n  Purpose:\tAlter messages\n  Definition:\tEdit message: gvim -f %F\n  Details:\tAllows editing of any received message. Can be used to remove \n\t\tunneeded message parts, etc.\n\n  Purpose:\tPretty format\n  Definition:\tPar: |par 72Tbgjqw74bEe B=._A_a 72bg|\n  Details:\tpar is a utility that can pretty format any text. It does a \n\t\tvery good job in indenting quoted messages, and justifying \n\t\ttext. Used when composing a message\n\n  Purpose:\tBrowse\n  Definition:\tPart/Dillo: dillo %p\u0026\n  Details:\tBrowse the selected message part in Dillo.\n\n\n  [1] The uudec script can be found in the 'tools' directory of the \n  distribution package. It needs uudecode and ImageMagick's display. The \n  latter can be replaced by any image viewer that can get input from \n  standard input. The script could also be modified to use temporary files \n  instead of standard input. \n\n\n4. Icon Themes\n--------------\n  Claws has support for different icon sets. Several icon sets can be\n  downloaded from https://www.claws-mail.org/themes.php\n  You will need to create a directory called 'themes' in your config\n  directory, unpack them into this directory, and then use the interface\n  to select them, /Configuration/Preferences/Display/Themes\n\n  This interface can also be used to install new themes.\n  \n\n5. Quick Search with extended search\n------------------------------------\n    Quick Search, with its powerful Extended search function,\n    enables searching through folder's messages.\n\n    Extended Search allows one to define criteria that messages must\n    have in order to match and be displayed in the summary view pane.\n    Search types titled From, Subject and To are self explanatory.\n    Search type extended allows one to use Claws Mail's powerful\n    filtering engine to select messages. Examples:\n    from regexpcase \"foo\"\n    subject regexp \"Bug\" \u0026 to regexp \"claws-mail\"\n\n    Additionally, it is possible to use simpler yet equally\n    powerfull patterns for message selections. Custom toolbar\n-----------------\n\n   /Configuration/Preferences/Customize Toolbars lets you define the\n   toolbar you want. The configuration dialog enables you to set an icon,\n   an appropriate text, and map an action to it. Actions to choose\n   from are predefined. You can also have your \"Claws Mail Actions\"\n   (refer to \"Actions\" above) on your toolbar.\n\n   Example: \n\t* Configuration-\u003eActions \n\t\t- add an entry \"Dillo: dillo %p\u0026\"\n        * Configuration-\u003eCustom toolbar    \n\t\t- select Claws Mail Actions Feature\n\t \t- select \"Dillo: dillo %p\u0026\" from drop down list\n\t\t- choose an icon and click ok\n\n\n    \n7. Partial downloading of POP3 mails\n------------------------------------\n  Messages over the configured size limit, (/[Account preferences]/\n  Receive/Message size limit), will be partially retrieved. These\n  messages will have a Notice View displayed (above the Message View),\n  informing of the partially retrieved state and the total size of the\n  message. The Notice View will also contain two buttons, 'Mark for\n  download' and 'Mark for deletion'. If the user clicks 'Mark for\n  download', the message will be downloaded in full at the next message\n  retrieval, (and the partial one deleted); if the user checks 'Mark for\n  deletion' it will be removed from the server after the normal delay\n  as specified in the POP3 account's 'Receive' preferences.\n  If a user moves a partially retrieved message to the Trash folder \n  it will be deleted on the server at the next retrieval after the \n  Trash folder has been emptied.\n\n\n8. Hidden options\n-----------------\n\n  There's several options which are not widely used and were not\n  added to the configuration interface to avoid excesive bloat.\n\n  The complete and up to date list of hidden options can be found\n  on Hidden preferences section of Claws Mail Manual:\n\n  https://www.claws-mail.org/manual/claws-mail-manual.html#adv_hidden\n\n9. Tools\n--------\n\n  Tools are small scripts which can help integrate Claws Mail with\n  other programs; perform format conversions between different kinds\n  of mailboxes, address books, etc.; be used in Claws Mail Actions for\n  a variety of purposes; or used in other programs to ease their\n  interoperability with Claws Mail.\n\n  You will find all the tools in the 'tools' directory and a detailed\n  description of the available scripts in 'tools/README.'\n\n10.
