Refer to the [Tauri documentation](https://v2.tauri.app/start/prerequisites/) for details on setting up the development environment prerequisites on different platforms.\n\n```bash\nnvm install v22\nnvm use v22\nnpm install -g pnpm\nrustup update\n```\n\n## Getting Started\n\nTo get started with Readest, follow these steps to clone and build the project.\n\n### 1. Clone the Repository\n\n```bash\ngit clone https://github.com/readest/readest.git\ncd readest\n```\n\n### 2. Install Dependencies\n\n```bash\n# might need to rerun this when code is updated\ngit submodule update --init --recursive\npnpm install\n# copy vendors dist libs to public directory\npnpm --filter @readest/readest-app setup-vendors\n```\n\n### 3. Verify Dependencies Installation\n\nTo confirm that all dependencies are correctly installed, run the following command:\n\n```bash\npnpm tauri info\n```\n\nThis command will display information about the installed Tauri dependencies and configuration on your platform. Note that the output may vary depending on the operating system and environment setup. Please review the output specific to your platform for any potential issues.\n\nFor Windows targets, “Build Tools for Visual Studio 2022” (or a higher edition of Visual Studio) and the “Desktop development with C++” workflow must be installed. For Windows ARM64 targets, the “VS 2022 C++ ARM64 build tools” and \"C++ Clang Compiler for Windows\" components must be installed. And make sure `clang` can be found in the path by adding `C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Visual Studio\\2022\\BuildTools\\VC\\Tools\\Llvm\\x64\\bin` for example in the environment variable `Path`.\n\n### 4. Build for Development\n\n```bash\n# Start development for the Tauri app\npnpm tauri dev\n# or start development for the Web app\npnpm dev-web\n# preview with OpenNext build for the Web app\npnpm preview\n```\n\nFor Android:\n\n```bash\n# Initialize the Android environment (run once)\nrm apps/readest-app/src-tauri/gen/android\npnpm tauri android init\ngit checkout apps/readest-app/src-tauri/gen/android\n\npnpm tauri android dev\n# or if you want to dev on a real device\npnpm tauri android dev --host\n```\n\nFor iOS:\n\n```bash\n# Set up the iOS environment (run once)\npnpm tauri ios init\n\npnpm tauri ios dev\n# or if you want to dev on a real device\npnpm tauri ios dev --host\n```\n\n### 5. Build for Production\n\n```bash\npnpm tauri build\npnpm tauri android build\npnpm tauri ios build\n```\n\nPlease refer to our release script if you experience any issues:\nhttps://github.com/readest/readest/blob/main/.github/workflows/release.yml\n\n### 6. Setup dev environment with Nix\n\nIf you have Nix installed, you can leverage flake to enter a development shell\nwith all the necessary dependencies:\n\n```bash\nnix develop ./ops # enter a dev shell for the web app\nnix develop ./ops#ios # enter a dev shell for the ios app\nnix develop ./ops#android # enter a dev shell for the android app\n```\n\n### 7. More information\n\nPlease check the [wiki][link-gh-wiki] of this project for more information on development.\n\n## Troubleshooting\n\n### 1. Readest Won’t Launch on Windows (Missing Edge WebView2 Runtime)\n\n**Symptom**\n\n- When you double-click readest.exe, nothing happens. No window appears, and Task Manager does not show the process.\n- This can affect both the standard installer and the portable version.\n\n**Cause**\n\n- Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is either missing, outdated, or improperly installed on your system. Readest depends on WebView2 to render the interface on Windows.\n\n**How to Fix**\n\n1. Check if WebView2 is installed\n - Open “Add or Remove Programs” (a.k.a. Apps \u0026 features) on Windows. Look for “Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.”\n2. Install or Update WebView2\n - Download the WebView2 Runtime directly from Microsoft: [link](https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2?form=MA13LH).\n - If you prefer an offline installer, download the offline package and run it as an Administrator.\n3. Re-run Readest\n - After installing/updating WebView2, launch readest.exe again.\n - If you still encounter problems, reboot your PC and try again.\n\n**Additional Tips**\n\n- If reinstalling once doesn’t work, uninstall Edge WebView2 completely, then reinstall it with Administrator privileges.\n- Verify your Windows installation has the latest updates from Microsoft.\n\n**Still Stuck?**\n\n- See Issue [readest/readest#358](https://github.com/readest/readest/issues/358) for further details, or head over to our [Discord][link-discord] server and open a support discussion with detailed logs of your environment and the steps you’ve taken.\n\n### 2. AppImage Launches but Only Shows a Taskbar Icon\n\nOn some Arch Linux systems—especially those using Wayland—the Readest AppImage may briefly show an icon in the taskbar and then exit without opening a window.\n\nYou might see logs such as:\n\n```\nCould not create default EGL display: EGL_BAD_PARAMETER. Aborting...\n```\n\nThis behavior is usually caused by compatibility issues between the bundled AppImage libraries and the system’s EGL / Wayland environment.\n\n**Workaround 1: Launch with LD_PRELOAD (recommended)**\n\nYou can preload the system Wayland client library before launching the AppImage:\n\n```\nLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libwayland-client.so /path/to/Readest.AppImage\n```\n\nThis workaround has been confirmed to resolve the issue on affected systems.\n\n**Workaround 2: Use the Flatpak Version**\n\nIf you prefer a more reliable out-of-the-box experience on Arch Linux, consider using the [Flatpak build on Flathub][link-flathub] instead. The Flatpak runtime helps avoid system library mismatches and tends to behave more consistently across different Wayland and X11 setups.\n\n## Contributors\n\nReadest is open-source, and contributions are welcome!
