We explain\nwhat seL4 is (and is not) and explore its defining features. We explain what\nmakes seL4 uniquely qualified as the operating-system kernel of choice for\nsecurity- and safety-critical systems, and generally embedded and\ncyber-physical systems. In particular, we explain seL4's assurance story, its\nsecurity- and safety-relevant features, and its benchmark-setting\nperformance. We also discuss typical usage scenarios, including incremental\ncyber retrofit of legacy systems.\n\n## Contributions\n\nContributions are welcome!\n\nPlease raise a GitHub pull request with fixes, changes, or additions.\n\n### Code of Conduct\n\nThis repository and interactions with it fall under the [seL4 Code of Conduct][2] available from the [seL4 website][3].\n\n### Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO)\n\nThis repository uses the same sign-off process as the Linux kernel. For every\nlarger contribution (more than a few lines of change), please use\n\n git commit -s\n\nto add a sign-off line to your commit message, which will come out as:\n\n Signed-off-by: name \u003cemail\u003e\n\nBy adding this line, you make the declaration that you have the right to make\nthis contribution under the open source license the files use that you changed\nor contributed.\n\nThe full text of the declaration is at \u003chttps://developercertificate.org\u003e.\n\n\n## Building the PDF\n\nThe paper build should work on Linux and MacOs systems.\n\nYou will need the packages `texlive-latex-extra` and `texlive-fonts-extra`\ninstalled. With that, simply\n\n make\n\nshould produce the file `whitepaper.pdf`.\n\nThe file `references.bib` is generated from a larger database not included in\nthis repository, but the paper should build fine without this database. If\n`make` asks you if you want to regenerate the file, it is safe to say no.\n\n\n## Contact\n\nGernot Heiser is the main author of the paper, please contact him for any\nqueries on this paper at \u003cgernot@seL4.systems\u003e.\n\n\n## License\n\nThe paper itself and most of the files in this repository are released under\nopen source licenses, see the SPDX headers in each file and the directory\n`LICENSES/` for details.
