Software Engineering Competency Matrix\n\nThis repository contains an [\"Open Competency Matrix\"][2] for Software\nEngineers. It includes a standard data structure as well as a basic tool for\ntransposing that data structure into friendlier formats like job postings and\ntables for human consumption.\n\nThis is an open-source project and all contents here are licensed appropriately.\nYou are encouraged to add your own organizations skills matrix to this\nrepository. You can do so by making a copy of the existing stride matrix model\nand modifying it to suit your organization.\n\n## Getting Started\n\n```\n$ git clone git@github.com/stride-so/matrix.git\n```\n\n## What is a Competency Matrix?\n\nA skills comptency matrix is a **tool** that is used to provide team members\nwith information on what a roles expectations are. By extension the matrix also\ncommunications what skills and capabilities are required in order to to advance\nto the next stage of their career. While a compentency matrix not a\ncomprehensive list of every single skill, it is a framework that helps you have\nconversations with your managers to get more actionable advice and information. \n \nIf you or your team do not have a competency matrix in place, you should\nencourage them to adopt one.\n\n## How do I read a Competency Matrix?\n\nThis repository contains a `models` directory which contains JSON encoded\nrepresentations of a competency `matrix`.  Each matrix file encodes several\ndimensions of information.\n\n1. The levels and titles used within the matrix.\n2. The title and body of any number of skills. Skills may be technical skills or\nthey may be essential skills.\n3. Skills are grouped into areas called 'themes'\n\nThe JSON representation is a transposition and 'structured' encoding of a table\n[like this one][2]. The linked table is parsed to generate the JSON file whose\nformat and layout is [described in this document][4]. \n\n## FAQ\n\n### Can I add my companies matrix?\n\nYes! Please!\n\n### How do I make my own matrix?\n\nYou can do make your own matrix by copying what already exists and changing it\nto something that suits your organization better. You can copy the [stride open\ncompentency matrix][4] to something you can edit then use that without\nlimitation. You can also copy the JSON representation in the models folder and\nchange your new file.\n\nIf you would like to include your matrix in this repository there is a tool that\nlets you convert the matrix layout of the [example comptency matrix][2] into the\nJSON representation. \n\n1. Copy the Google Sheet\n2. make your edits then export the sheet as an `.xlsx` file. \n3. Then run the tool against that file. \n\nYou will need `go` installed on your machine.\n\n```shell\n$ go install github.com/stride-so/matrix/tools/cmd/stride@latest\n$ stride parse -in filename.xlsx \u003e filename.json\n```\n\n### Why don't the role titles match my organization?\n\nTitles mean a lot to some people, but titles are not the same across all\norganizations. For this reason the titles in the provided model are an attempted\nstandardization across multiple organizations. This was done by collecting, and\nreading through a list of about 20 different competency matrixes, career tracks,\netc from several software organizations. If you have friendly suggestions on\nmore appropriate titles please [open a pull request][3] or feel free to add your\nown matrix.\n\n### What is the difference between Essential and Technical Skills?\n\nEssential skills are sometimes referred to as transferable or 'soft' skills.\nTechnical skills apply to a specific domain. For example, writing documentation,\nbeing a project leader, understanding budgets, leadership, mentoring,\ncommunication, etc are all essential skills. No matter which role you have at\nany company you will likely need to employ some (or all!) of these skills\ndepending on your role. In a software capacity, technical skills includes\ncomposition and comprehension of code as well as understanding testing,\nsecurity, hardware, constraints, trade-offs, etc.\n\n\u003c!--- links ---\u003e\n[2]: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qj2FTqKsuHPqnMyDNUFKi-RiiCU77EWuQwVODS4lS18/edit#gid=1772650517\n[3]: https://github.com/stride-so/matrix/compare\n[4]: ./docs/DESIGN.md","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fstride-so%2Fmatrix","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fstride-so%2Fmatrix","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fstride-so%2Fmatrix/lists"}
