- GELF Library and Writer for Go\n========================================\n\n[GELF] (Graylog Extended Log Format) is an application-level logging\nprotocol that avoids many of the shortcomings of [syslog]. While it\ncan be run over any stream or datagram transport protocol, it has\nspecial support ([chunking]) to allow long messages to be split over\nmultiple datagrams.\n\nHistory and Overview\n------\nThis repo was duplicated from https://github.com/Graylog2/go-gelf/tree/v2 (not forked for originally private repo).\n\nIt has specific customizations for Jobot company needs but is not company confidential and currently public as such and for easier installs.\n\nPrimary customizations:\n\n- A [standardized logging format](gelf.go) so data can be extracted from logged message and input better into Seq\n  - [Additional fields are added](https://github.com/teamjobot/go-gelf/blob/main/message.go#L176) that can be filtered and searched separately from log msg\n- Support for log levels - source package logged everything as Info\n- Support for Go function name\n- Support for log message id\n- Support for https://github.com/op/go-logging (source is go log pkg only)\n  - Excluding it from call stack for log location\n  - Handling file and line number appropriately\n\nThis library helps strike a good middle ground between the two extremes of:\n1. Having to replace a log library and use it everywhere OR\n2. Just sending stdout to a GELF endpoint and not be able to add fields or customize message format\n\nBy only requiring creating a GELF writer and adding as a backend, apps can quickly send logs that have common\nhelpful fields and formatted in a way that makes them easier to view.\n\nVersions\n--------\n\nv1.0.0\n------\n\nThis implementation currently supports UDP and TCP as a transport\nprotocol. TLS is unsupported.\n\nThe library provides an API that applications can use to log messages\ndirectly to a Graylog server and an `io.Writer` that can be used to\nredirect the standard library's log messages (`os.Stdout`) to a\nGraylog server.\n\n[GELF]: http://docs.graylog.org/en/2.2/pages/gelf.html\n[syslog]: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5424\n[chunking]: http://docs.graylog.org/en/2.2/pages/gelf.html#chunked-gelf\n\n\nInstalling\n----------\n\tcd $GOPATH\n    go get github.com/teamjobot/go-gelf\n\nUsage\n-----\n\n```golang\npackage main\n\nimport (\n\t\"github.com/op/go-logging\"\n\t\"github.com/teamjobot/go-gelf\"\n\t\"os\"\n)\n\nfunc main() {\n\tvar graylogAddr string\n\n\tflag.StringVar(\u0026graylogAddr, \"graylog\", \"\", \"graylog server addr\")\n\tflag.Parse()\n\n\tseqBackend := graylogAddr(graylogAddr)\n\tfileBackend := newFileBackend(\"app-name.log\")\n\tstdOutBackend := newStdOutBackend()\n\n\tvar level = logging.INFO\n\tsetLevel(level, seqBackend, fileBackend, outBackend)\n\n\tlogging.SetBackend(seqBackend, fileBackend, outBackend)\n}\n\nfunc newGraylogBackend(address string) logging.LeveledBackend {\n\t// or NewTCPWriter(address)\n\tsettings := gelf.Settings {\n        Address: address,\n\t\tAppName: stringp(\"my-app\"), \n\t\tEnv: stringp(\"uat\"), \n\t\tVersion: \u0026Version}\n\tvar logger, err = gelf.NewUDPWriter(settings)\n\n\tif err != nil {\n\t\tlog.Fatalf(\"Failed to create UDP writer: %s\", err)\n\t}\n\n\tbackend := logging.NewLogBackend(logger, \"\", 0)\n\treturn logging.AddModuleLevel(logging.NewBackendFormatter(backend, gelfFormat()))\n}\n\nfunc gelfFormat() logging.Formatter {\n\treturn logging.MustStringFormatter(gelf.LogFormat)\n}\n\nfunc setLevel(level logging.Level, backends ...logging.LeveledBackend) {\n\tfor _, backend := range backends {\n\t\tbackend.SetLevel(level, \"\")\n\t}\n}\n\n```\nThe above program can be invoked as:\n\n    go run test.go -graylog=localhost:12201\n\nWhen using UDP messages may be dropped or re-ordered. However, Graylog\nserver availability will not impact application performance; there is\na small, fixed overhead per log call regardless of whether the target\nserver is reachable or not.\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fteamjobot%2Fgo-gelf","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fteamjobot%2Fgo-gelf","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fteamjobot%2Fgo-gelf/lists"}
