The purpose of this repo is for you to gain a\ndeeper understanding of what open source projects we're currently\nworking on at The Frontside and where those projects are heading.\n\nOur goal is to be working openly and documenting our direction if it\npertains to open source. This is so the users of our software can have\ninsight into what is next for the project they're relying on. We're\nalways looking for ways to improve how we collaborate with the\ncommunity. If the users want to, they can provide feedback and have\nan impact on our process or projects. This repo is open source, so you can\n[open an issue!](https://github.com/thefrontside/oss-wumbo/issues/new)\n\n## Why is OSS important to The Frontside?\n\nWe take open source pretty seriously at the Frontside because we\nstrongly believe in giving back to the programming community. As a\nconsultancy, we see many of the same problems in client apps crop up\nagain, and again, and again, and this is how most of our open source\nprojects are born.\n\nBy actively identifying shared problems, we are able to develop shared\nsolutions solutions, and by open sourcing these solutions we allow\ntheir consumers to report bugs and contribute back. This creates a\nmuch stronger piece of software which is great for **everyone\ninvolved**. That means you, our clients, and the community at large.\n\nLastly, owning code is very expensive. This is because if\nyou own a project, you have to manage that project and make sure your users\nare happy. We're more than willing to take the responsibility that our\nopen source projects avoids the dreaded\n[bit rot](http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/B/bit-rot.html) so that our\ncommunity can experience the benefits of code ownership without having\nto continually shoulder its costs.\n\n## What is a project champion?\n\nA project champion is a person who is the main manager of an open\nsource repo. We need project champions because unowned projects tend\nto rot. If someone \"owns\" a repo, they're responsible for making sure\nthat repos community is healthy. This person will have the most\ncontext of the project and documents the road map of the project. **This\ndoes not mean they do all the work.**\n\nSome of the responsibilities for being a project champion are:\n\n- Keeping the project up to date\n  - Managing dependencies\n  - Not letting PRs get stale\n  - Not letting issues get stale or unanswered\n- Managing \u0026 replying to issues\n  - Add proper labels\n  - Add proper release milestones\n- Assigning PRs for review\n- Setting release milestones\n- Publishing the road map\n- **Delegating tasks when needed**\n\nBeing a project champion means managing the code is only half of the\nbattle. You're managing a small community that uses your project.\nYou also fill a support role for people who need help using the\nproject. It's very important to foster this community! You can find\nthe list of projects and [their champions here](http://github.com/thefrontside/oss-wumbo/project-champions.md).\n\n## What should a Frontside OS repo include?\n\nOur goal is to provide the best OS software to the community. This\nmeans each one of our addons must fill a gap in the ecosystem, not\nreinvent things. Owning code is expensive after all. For us to declare\nan OS repo to be in good standing condition it must include the\nfollowing:\n\n  - Contributing.md\n    - How to build the source code\n    - How to run the tests\n    - The best way to get your PR accepted\n  - Issue template\n  - PR template\n  - Changelog.md\n  - Code Of Conduct\n  - Fully filled out package.json\n  - Fully filled out \"Description\" \u0026 \"Website\" inputs on GitHub\n  - Organize releases with milestones\n  - Nicely designed, uniformly branded example pages\n  - Cross browser test all the things\n  - Auto publishing `gh-pages` from CI\n  - Organized issues with labels (standardized labels)\n    - Bug\n    - Won't fix\n    - Documentation\n    - Feature\n    - Good for beginners\n    - Investigate\n    - Waiting for response\n    - Dependency update\n  - A filled out README with the following:\n    - badges\n      - released version\n      - version compatibility\n      - build status\n    - Describe what problem does this solve for me?\n    - Show exactly how you would use this in an app\n    - Link to a demonstration in action\n    - Section for those who are *Stuck*\n      - tweet\n      - pairing hours\n      - Contributors are visible, and easy to reach\n","project_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fthefrontside%2Foss-wumbo","html_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/projects/github.com%2Fthefrontside%2Foss-wumbo","lists_url":"https://awesome.ecosyste.ms/api/v1/projects/github.com%2Fthefrontside%2Foss-wumbo/lists"}
