Historical style terms like Renaissance\nor Baroque letterforms cannot be applied beyond Latin/Cyrillic/Greek\nscripts to any greater extent than Kufi or Nashki can be applied beyond\nArabic script; \"italic\" is strictly meaningful only for Latin letters, \nalthough many scripts such as Cyrillic have a history with \"cursive\" and\nmany others with \"oblique\" faces. \n\nHowever, most modern writing systems have typographic formulations for\ncontrasting uniform and modulated character stroke widths, and since the\nadvent of the typewriter, most have developed a typographic style with\nuniform-width characters.\n\nAccordingly, the GNU FreeFont family has one monospaced - FreeMono - and two\nproportional faces (one with uniform stroke - FreeSans - and one with\nmodulated stroke - FreeSerif).\n\nThe point of having characters from different writing systems in one font\nis that mixed text should look good, and so each GNU FreeFont face contains\ncharacters of similar style and weight.\n\nLicensing\n---------\n\nGNU FreeFont is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it\nunder the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the\nFree Software Foundation; either version 3 of the License, or (at your option)\nany later version.\n\nThe fonts are distributed in the hope that they will be useful, but\nWITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY\nor FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the GNU General Public License\nfor more details.\n\nYou should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License along\nwith this program; if not, write to the Free Software Foundation, Inc.,\n51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02110-1301, USA.\n\n* Regarding the use of built font files.\n\nAs a special exception, if you create a document which uses this font, and\nembed this font or unaltered portions of this font into the document, this\nfont does not by itself cause the resulting document to be covered by the\nGNU General Public License. This exception does not however invalidate any\nother reasons why the document might be covered by the GNU General Public\nLicense. If you modify this font, you may extend this exception to your\nversion of the font, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not\nwish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version.\n\n* Clarification of exception, regarding intended use of embedded fonts\n\nThe exception to the GNU General Public License for the GNU FreeFont\nsoftware exempts a user that embeds part or all of the GNU FreeFont software\nin a document, as well as subsequent users and distributors of the document,\nfrom complying with the GNU GPL under some circumstances.\n\nSpecifically, this exemption applies when the embedder has not modified\nthe GNU FreeFont software before embedding it. This is true even though\nportions of the software become part of the document.\n\nTherefore users of fonts released with this exception need not concern\nthemselves with the license terms to:\n\n Create a printable file using the fonts.\n - Publish such a file.\n - Redistribute such a file.\n - Publicly display such a file.\n - Print such a file or display it on the screen.\n\nHowever anyone distributing the font software as software separately from\nthe document, even if the way the font software was obtained was to extract\nit from a document, would have to comply with the GNU GPL.\n\nA modified version of the GNU FreeFont software must comply with the GNU GPL.\nIt may optionally carry the same exception as the GNU FreeFont software\nitself, and we recommend releasing modified versions that way. If it does,\nthen users will likewise be permitted to embed the modified version in\ndocuments and be exempt from the GNU GPL requirements on those documents. \n\nFiles and their suffixes\n------------------------\n\nThe files with .sfd (Spline Font Database) are in FontForge's native format. \nThey may be used to modify the fonts.\n\nGenerated TrueType fonts are the files with the .ttf (TrueType Font) suffix. \nThese are ready to use in GNU/Linux, and on most modern computer operating\nsystems.\n\nOpenType fonts (with suffix .otf) are preferred for use on GNU/Linux, Uni*,\nbut *not* for recent Microsoft Windows systems.\nSee the INSTALL file for more information.\n\nWeb Open Font Format files (with suffix .woff) are for use in Web sites.\nSee the webfont_guidelines.txt for further information.\n\nFurther information\n-------------------\n\nHome page of GNU FreeFont:\n\thttp://www.gnu.org/software/freefont/\n\nMore information is at the main project page of Free UCS scalable fonts:\n\thttp://savannah.gnu.org/projects/freefont/\n\nTo report problems with GNU FreeFont, it is best to obtain a Savannah\naccount and post reports using that account on\n\thttps://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/\n\t\nPublic discussions about GNU FreeFont may be posted to the mailing list\n\tfreefont-bugs@gnu.org\n\n--------------------------------------------------------------------------\nSome files in the package are copyright by GNU Freefont contributors, while\nothers are copyrighted by individuals.
