Welcome to **FinEval**
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in various natural language processing tasks, but their effectiveness in more challenging and domain-specific tasks remains largely unexplored. This article introduces FinEval, a benchmark designed specifically for financial domain knowledge in LLMs.
FinEval, a benchmark for evaluating financial domain knowledge in LLMs, is based on quantitative foundational methods. It consists of 8,351 question types that closely align with real-world application scenarios, including multiple-choice questions, subjective open-ended questions and objective short-answer questions, reasoning planning, and retrieval-based QA. These questions cover topics such as Financial Academic Knowledge, Financial Industry Knowledge, Financial Security Knowledge and Financial Agent. To ensure a comprehensive assessment of model performance, FinEval combines objective and subjective evaluation criteria such as Accuracy, Rouge-L, and expert evaluation guidelines, utilizing zero-shot, five-shot, zero-shot CoT and five-shot CoT methods for evaluation. By evaluating state-of-the-art LLMs on FinEval, the results show that Claude 3.5-Sonnet achieves the highest weighted average score of 72.9 across all financial domain categories under zero-shot setting, indicating significant growth potential of LLMs in financial domain knowledge. Our work provides a more comprehensive benchmark for evaluating financial knowledge, incorporating simulated exam data and open-ended questions, covering a wide range of evaluation scopes for large language models.

It consists of 4,661 questions covering 34 different academic subjects. FinEval aims to provide a comprehensive benchmark for assessing knowledge in financial academia. It utilizes simulated exam data and covers a wide range of evaluation scopes for large language models.

Unlike the multiple-choice questions in Finance Academic Knowledge, the answers to objective short-answer questions in Finance Industry Knowledge consist of two or three words or phrases. The large model needs to select the corresponding words as answers based on the question and the answer set provided in the prompt. Therefore, objective questions can better reflect the large model's ability to follow instructions and comprehend in various financial application scenarios. Subjective open-ended questions are constructed through the generation of GPT-4 combined with manual screening, requiring the large model to provide long-text responses. Thus, subjective open-ended questions can better simulate real-world interactive scenarios in business.
The two tables show that GPT-4o outperforms other models in objective tasks with an average score of 78.1, excelling in categories like FSA and NEE. Closed-source models like Gemini-1.5-flash also perform well, closely trailing GPT-4o. For subjective tasks, Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct leads with a score of 39.3, followed by Claude 3.5-sonnet at 38.8. While closed-source models dominate, open-source models show strong potential, narrowing the performance gap.

XuanYuan3-70B-Chat also performs well, surpassing some general models with an average score neraly 60. While general models exhibit stronger capabilities overall, financial-specific models like DISC-FinLLM and FinGPTv3.1 show promising potential, though they still trail behind the top performers. Larger models generally demonstrate stronger performance across financial tasks.
## Usage
Currently, we have only open-sourced the initial version of FinEval, which includes all the data related to academic knowledge in the field of finance. Subsequently, we have developed three additional parts: financial industry knowledge, financial security knowledge, and financial agents. However, these three parts of data are not currently open-source. If you need to evaluate them, please contact us to obtain authorization. All authorized institutions or individuals will be mentioned in the FinEval documentation.
The following instructions apply to the initial version of FinEval. Authorized individuals or institutions participating in the latest FinEval evaluation can refer to the instructions in the email's accompanying documentation for evaluation purposes.
### Installation
Below are the steps for quick installation. For detailed instructions, please refer to the [Installation Guide](docs/en/get_started/install.md).

```### Dataset Preparation
Download the dataset using Hugging Face datasets. Run the command to **manually download** and decompress, run the following command in the Fineval/code project directory, and rename it to data, and prepare the dataset to the FinEval/code/data directory.

## How to Submit
The location for saving the assessment results is: `output_path=$PROJ_HOME/output_dir/${exp_name}/$exp_date`. Within this folder, the `submission.json` file is generated automatically. Users only need to submit this file.
