# Searchable Car Database

This is a searchable car database with 40,000+ entries from 1987-2021 (updated 9/14/2020). Includes data items like make, model, year, transmission type, fuel economy data, etc. There are two different formats you can download the dataset in, JSON and CSV. There is also a link to a react app that utilizes the data along with [PouchDb](https://pouchdb.com/) to create a browser based database with indexing.

__Note:__ The dataset that is used to populate the database for the search webapp takes awhile to load into browser memory and create indexes on

All data is from [fueleconomy.gov](https://fueleconomy.gov) and you may download this dataset from their [website](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/download.shtml) too.

## Getting Started

`parser.py` is used to transform the data from CSV to JSON format. Use `parser.py --help` to see a list of required inputs

```sh
pip install pipenv
pipenv shell
pipenv install
python parser.py [args]
```

The react app and accompanying database is under `vehicle-search/`

### Installing

To get the react app up and running, follow the README found under `vehicle-search/`

## Built With

* [PouchDb](https://pouchdb.com/) - The database that houses the 40,000+ entries in browser
