# Overview

The birth: September 2007.

The scope: [Pidgin](https://pidgin.im) (multi-protocol messenger).

The innovation: use the original emoticons/smileys of their respective messenger/protocol - Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, etc.

The reasoning: if emoticons show emotions, then different drawings show different emotions, no matter how many similarities they share.

The technical common-sense: emoticons have grown to be proprietary to the protocol. So it is common-sense that when you are using a certain protocol to communicate, you use its emoticons too.

The e-collaboration principle: WYSIWIS (What-you-see-is-what-I-see).

The hibernation: February 2010.

The changelog: [pidgin-original-changelog.txt](pidgin-original-changelog.txt)
