# MAC Changer in Linux
Using macchanger in Kali Linux is a way to change or spoof the MAC address of your network interface. MAC address is a unique identifier that is assigned to each network device, such as a wireless card or an ethernet card. Changing the MAC address can help you to avoid network tracking, bypass MAC filtering, or impersonate another device.
To use macchanger in Kali Linux, you need to follow these steps:
- First, you need to install macchanger if it is not already installed. You can do this by running the following command in a terminal:
```bash
sudo apt install macchanger
```- Next, you need to find out the name of your network interface that you want to change the MAC address of. You can use the `ip link` command to list all the network interfaces and their current MAC addresses. For example:
```bash
ip link
```- You will see something like this:
```bash
1: lo: mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00

```- In this example, the network interfaces are `lo`, `eth0`, and `wlan0`. The MAC addresses are the hexadecimal numbers after `link/ether`. You can choose any interface that you want to change the MAC address of, but make sure it is not in use or connected to any network.
- Then, you need to turn off the network interface using the `ip link` command with the `set` and `down` options. For example, if you want to change the MAC address of `wlan0`, you can run:
```bash
sudo ip link set wlan0 down
```- After that, you can use the `macchanger` command with different options to change the MAC address. For example, you can use the `-r` option to set a random MAC address, the `-m` option to set a specific MAC address, or the `-a` option to set a random MAC address of the same vendor as the original one. For example, to set a random MAC address for `wlan0`, you can run:
```bash
sudo macchanger -r wlan0
```- You will see something like this:
```bash
Current MAC: 08:00:27:9b:7f:5d (PCS Systemtechnik GmbH)
Permanent MAC: 08:00:27:9b:7f:5d (PCS Systemtechnik GmbH)
New MAC: 00:1e:8c:2a:4a:0f (Asustek Computer)
```- This shows the current, permanent, and new MAC addresses of the network interface. The permanent MAC address is the one that is assigned by the manufacturer and cannot be changed. The current MAC address is the one that is in use and can be changed. The new MAC address is the one that is randomly generated and assigned by macchanger.
- Finally, you need to turn on the network interface using the `ip link` command with the `set` and `up` options. For example, to turn on `wlan0`, you can run:
```bash
sudo ip link set wlan0 up
```- You can verify that the MAC address has been changed by running the `ip link` command again or the `macchanger` command with the `-s` option. For example, to check the MAC address of `wlan0`, you can run:
```bash
macchanger -s wlan0
```- You will see something like this:
```bash
Current MAC: 00:1e:8c:2a:4a:0f (Asustek Computer)
Permanent MAC: 08:00:27:9b:7f:5d (PCS Systemtechnik GmbH)
```- This shows that the current MAC address is different from the permanent MAC address, which means that the MAC address has been successfully changed.
- You can change the MAC address back to the original one by using the `-p` option with macchanger. For example, to reset the MAC address of `wlan0`, you can run:
```bash
sudo macchanger -p wlan0
```- You will see something like this:
```bash
Current MAC: 00:1e:8c:2a:4a:0f (Asustek Computer)
Permanent MAC: 08:00:27:9b:7f:5d (PCS Systemtechnik GmbH)
New MAC: 08:00:27:9b:7f:5d (PCS Systemtechnik GmbH)
```- This shows that the current MAC address is the same as the permanent MAC address, which means that the MAC address has been restored to the original one.
