# Election 2017: People turn to Google ahead of election

In May 2017 Dan Wainwright [reported on which election-related searches were most popular in different parts of the country](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39938599). We approached Google for the data on search patterns.
## Get the data
* CSV: ["Search interest in 'register to vote' by UK location over the last 7 days. All values indexed to 100, where 100 is the max value](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BBC-Data-Unit/election-google/master/BBC-%20Google%20Trends%20request%20-%20register%20to%20vote.csv)
* CSV: ["Search interest in 'who should I vote for' by UK location over the last 7 days. All values indexed to 100, where 100 is the max value](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BBC-Data-Unit/election-google/master/BBC-%20Google%20Trends%20request%20-%20who%20should%20I%20vote%20for.csv)
* [Most searched party leader in each constituency 17 Oct 2016-17 April 2017](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BBC-Data-Unit/election17-google/master/most%20searched%20party%20leader%20in%20each%20constituency%2017%20Oct%202016-17%20April%202017.csv). *Note: Jonathan Bartley, Leanne Wood, Robin Swann/Mike Nesbitt, Gerry Adams and Colum Eastwood were also included in the analysis but didn't come top in any constituency*.
* Google also had data on [Google Trends for BBC England: Top searched political issue by constituency, Oct 2016-Apr 2017](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SfdGkCc1QeSaTyjb7lBUYbokfGO3MueSLC_VQRYEDNM/edit#gid=0), which is [mapped here](https://googledataorg.carto.com/u/googledata/viz/fed4d4ae-2a90-11e7-8624-42010a148070/embed_map). These are *'searches that have been determined by Google's algorithm as falling into the "politics" category.'*
