# Goofy, a desktop app for Facebook Messenger

At its core, Goofy is a simple app that shows a web view of messenger.com, but adding additional functionality you would expect from a native desktop app.

## Features

**Native Notifications**
Receive macOS notifications when new messages arrive while the app is running. Click a notification to jump directly to that conversation. Note: Notifications only work when the Messenger app is open.

**Badge Counter**
See your unread message count displayed on the Messenger app icon in your Dock, just like a native app. The badge updates while the app is running.

## Installation

Just download the latest version from the [releases page](https://github.com/danielbuechele/goofy/releases/latest), unzip it and move it to your Applications folder.

## Questions

### How do I report bugs?
Please use the [Issues section](https://github.com/danielbuechele/goofy/issues) on the GitHub repository to report any bugs or request features.

### Is Goofy an Electron app?
No, Goofy is built using macOS's native WebView component via Swift and SwiftUI. This results in a much smaller app size and lower memory usage compared to Electron-based apps.

### Can Goofy access my Facebook data?
Goofy works by injecting a small JavaScript snippet into messenger.com to enable notifications and badge counting. The source code is open and available for review on GitHub, so you can verify that no data is being collected or transmitted elsewhere.

### I don't like the icon. Can I change it?
Yes! [macosicons.com](https://macosicons.com/#/messenger) has a great selection of alternative Messenger icons. You can replace the app icon by right-clicking on the Goofy app in Finder, selecting "Get Info", and dragging your preferred icon image onto the existing icon in the top-left.
