## Purpose Statement

In January of this year (barely more than 6 months ago!) OpenAI [launched a custom GPT store](https://openai.com/index/introducing-the-gpt-store/) allowing users to overlay their own configuration parameters and knowledge on top of GPT-4o.

Theoretically, anybody can share a custom GPT with the entirety of ChatGPT's userbase.

In reality, however, only a miniscule percentage of projects (it appears those with commercial relationships to OpenAI) make it to the GPT Store homepage, which is currently housed at [chatgpt.com/gpts](https://www.chatgpt.com/gpts). The others can be retrieved through keyword searches. But many languish in obscrutiy.

How big is the discrepancy between the GPTs spotlighted on the GPT Store homepage and the very long tail of virtually unknown models?

At the time of writing this (18-08-24), OpenAI lists about **84** custom GPTs in its marketplace spread over 7 main categories (each housing a 'top 12' listing).

But how many GPTs are actually out there?

Custom GPTs have a URL pattern matching `chatgpt.com/g/*`.

Running a search for `site:chatgpt.com/g/*` in Google, today, suggests that there are 243,000 results for the URL pattern:

For argument's sake, let's assume, without any attempts at validation, that this number is accurate and representative of the total number of custom GPTs that have been created on ChatGPT since January. This would equal about **30,000** custom GPTs being created per month or roughly 1,000 per day across ChatGPT's global userbase (the number is not disclosed.)

This would mean that the GPT Store listing represents just **0.035%** of total custom GPTs out there.

So what are the invisible **99.9%** of custom GPT users doing?

After programmatic scraping attempts failed, I decided to feed my curiosity the old-fashioned way by trawling, manually, through Google listings. Some fo the GPTs stumbled upon are listed in this repo.

*Note: small list of GPTs presented reflects my own interests!*
