# Luabinaries
This repository houses the most recent stable versions of the Lua language and creates static binaries ready to download and run.
We aim to create Lua interpreters that are optimized, compact and can run on most Lua supported platforms.
## Supported Platforms
Each platform provides both the Lua interpreter and the Lua bytecode compiler (luac).

## Building
**On Linux:**
Make sure you installed the dependencies needed for building:
```
sudo apt-get install -y make musl musl-tools gcc-mingw-w64
```
The [Makefile](https://github.com/dyne/luabinaries/blob/main/Makefile) does everything needed using the original Lua source-code releases archived in this repository.

**On macOS:**

**Build Targets:**
- `make linux-x64` - Build Linux x64 binaries
- `make linux-arm64` - Build Linux ARM64 binaries (cross-compiled)
- `make windows` - Build Windows x64 binaries
- `make macos-x64` - Build macOS Intel binaries
- `make macos-arm64` - Build macOS Apple Silicon binaries
- `make all` - Build all platforms and architectures
Binaries are built to architecture-specific directories:
- `build/linux-x64/` - Linux x64
- `build/linux-arm64/` - Linux ARM64
- `build/win64/` - Windows x64
- `build/macos-x64/` - macOS Intel
- `build/macos-arm64/` - macOS Apple Silicon
The versions of the released binaries are listed below, the respective sources are available at https://lua.org/ftp:

To build static binaries ready to run everywhere, we use [Musl](https://musl.libc.org/).
The released binaries are compressed to ~50% of their original size using [upx-ucl](https://upx.github.io/).
## CI/CD
GitHub Actions automatically builds binaries using a matrix strategy:
**Linux Builds** (Ubuntu runners):
- **linux-x64**: Static binaries built with musl
- **linux-arm64**: Cross-compiled with aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc
**Windows Builds** (Ubuntu runners):
- **windows-x64**: Cross-compiled with MinGW
**macOS Builds** (Native runners):
- **macos-x64**: Built on macOS 13 (Intel) runners
- **macos-arm64**: Built on macOS 14 (Apple Silicon) runners
All binaries are compressed with UPX and packaged with SHA256 checksums. Releases are automatically created and tagged with the git commit hash.
