# Career Compass

A copy-paste prompt that turns ChatGPT or Claude into a thoughtful career advisor. No signup, no hosting, no fee.

Designed for people who are:
- re-entering work after a gap
- recently out of a job and unsure what's next
- changing direction and not sure where to point

Works in English or Italian (or whatever language you write in). Intended for adults (18+).

## How to use

1. **Open** [ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com) or [Claude](https://claude.ai). Any free plan works.
2. **Copy the prompt** from [prompt.md](./prompt.md) — click the file, then the copy icon at the top right.
3. **Paste it** into a new conversation.
4. **Start talking** — in your own language. The advisor will ask one question at a time.

That's it.

## What you get

- Structured, non-judgmental conversation about where you actually are in your search
- One or two concrete things you can do this week — not a generic 30-step plan
- A **Session Summary** at the end that you save and paste at the start of your next conversation, so you can pick up where you left off

## Use in your language

- **English**: paste the prompt, write in English
- **Italian**: paste the prompt, write in Italian (il consulente risponderà in italiano)
- **Other languages**: paste the prompt, write in the language you want the conversation in

## Privacy

This is a plain text prompt. Pasting it into ChatGPT or Claude keeps your conversation inside your account with that provider — nothing goes to me, there is no backend, no tracking. [Read the privacy note.](./docs/privacy.md)

## For the curious

- [How it works](./docs/how-it-works.md) — what's actually inside the prompt
- [Example session](./docs/example-session.md) — a redacted real session, so you can see what the conversation feels like

## Tips

- The advisor works best when you're honest — about what you don't know, what you're scared of, and what you've already tried
- It will not rewrite your CV for you. It will tell you specific changes to make, and you make them. This is intentional — AI-rewritten CVs fail in interviews
- It will not generate 50 cover letters. It will help you apply to 5 roles well, which works better statistically
- Web search needs to be enabled in your AI tool (it usually is by default) for the fullest experience, but the core works without it
