# Pagerank Algorithm
In this project, I create a simple search engine for the Lawfare blog (https://www.lawfareblog.com/). I later updated this project by including a word2vec library ```gensim``` to improve the search engine where webpages containing related words to the searched key term are also returned. For the examples below I used ```'glove-wiki-gigaword-300'``` model in ```gensim```.
# Step 1: The Power Method
I implimented ```WebGraph.power_method``` function found in ```pagerank.py``` to compute the pagerank vector.Initially, I run the power method on a smaller graph ```small.csv.gz``` that was in the paper *Deeper Inside Pagerank*. Below was my output:
```
python3 pagerank.py --data=./small.csv.gz
INFO:root:rank=0 pagerank=2.1634e+00 url=4
INFO:root:rank=1 pagerank=1.6664e+00 url=6
INFO:root:rank=2 pagerank=1.2402e+00 url=5
INFO:root:rank=3 pagerank=4.5712e-01 url=2
INFO:root:rank=4 pagerank=3.5620e-01 url=3
INFO:root:rank=5 pagerank=3.2078e-01 url=1
````After my Power method was working correctly, I moved on to the Lawfare blog and started using the power method to return urls matching the entered query sorted according to their pagerank.
```--search_query``` == **corona**
```
python3.8 pagerank.py --data=./lawfareblog.csv.gz --search_query='corona'

You can see that the power method returned a good number of links that are pages instead of articles that I am more interested in. Hence, I used ```--filter-ratio``` to remove urls that have more links than the specified fraction.

```
It's clear that increasing alpha from .85 to .99999 changed the pagerank and it would be up to the one who is writing the algorithm to decide which pagerank makes more sense than the other.# Step 2: The personalization vector
I started by implementing ```WebGraph.make_personalization_vector``` function. This function enables ```--personalization_vector_query``` argument which makes changes to the personalization vector.
Earlier when we used ```--search_query``` we got
```
python3.8 pagerank.py --data=./lawfareblog.csv.gz --search_query='corona'

```
but after using ```--personalization_vector_query``` we get
```
python3.8 pagerank.py --data=./lawfareblog.csv.gz --filter_ratio=0.2 --personalization_vector_query='corona'--search_query='corona'

In the latter example, a webpage is important only if other coronavirus webpages think it's important while the first example treats a webpage as important when any other webpage thinks that it's important.Lastly, let's look at webpages that are related to ```corona``` or ```iran``` but that do not directly mention those two words. These webpages are relevant to the topics but because our ```--search_query``` had to include corona or iran we did not get them in our pagerank.
