# `What is` [`Trojan`](https://twitter.com/imvickykumar123/status/1727223882665672735)?

A Trojan is a type of malware.

Trojans, or Trojan horses, are malware that disguise themselves as legitimate programs or software.

They use social engineering to trick users into installing them.

Once installed, Trojans can perform actions like:

- Exporting files
- Modifying data
- Deleting files
- Stealing information
- Sending premium SMS texts.

Trojans can also act as a delivery vehicle for other threats.

For example, a Trojan can overwrite files on a machine and then send itself to the victim's contact list.

To avoid Trojans, you can:

- Surf the web carefully
- Avoid opening email attachments without thinking
- Only obtain programs from secure sources
- Keep your operating system up-to-date
- Use an always-on virus scanner

Trojans get their name from the hollow wooden horse that the Greeks hid inside of during the Trojan War.
