README

Working version of [Akka 2.0 ZeroMQ sample code](http://doc.akka.io/docs/akka/2.0/scala/zeromq.html),
implemented as three programs: a publisher and two subscribers.
I added throughput display (messages/second and bytes/second), and debug-level log statements so progress when running could be apparent.

Before the program can run, ZeroMQ and its [Java bindings](http://www.zeromq.org/bindings:java) need to be built and installed.
The Java bindings consist of `zmq.jar` PLUS the libraries that get built at the same time.
Be sure you have built the Java bindings on your machine before specifying `zmq.jar` as a dependency to your project.

## Ubuntu
On Ubuntu, it is easy to build both packages from source, if you follow the proper recipe (below).
You should build the [Java bindings repository](https://launchpad.net/~tuomjarv/+archive/jzmq) from source because the
package archive has not been updated in over a year, so it is not up to date.

FYI, here is how to add the old ZeroMQ repository.
I don't think you should use it because you should build the Java bindings anyway, and the versions of the two packages should match.

````
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/zeromq
sudo aptitude install libzmq-dev
````

### Building from source
First build ZeroMQ.
`autogen.sh` is optional; it speeds up the process, but because of incompatibility introduced with Ubuntu 12.04, don't run `autogen.sh`.

````
sudo apt-get install libtool autoconf automake uuid-dev e2fsprogs
git clone git://github.com/zeromq/libzmq.git
cd libzmq
./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install && echo ":: ALL OK ::"
sudo cp src/.libs/libzmq.so /usr/local/lib
sudo ldconfig -v
ls -al /usr/local/lib/libzmq.*
````

Output should show all of the following files:

````
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6227178 2012-06-13 10:12 /usr/local/lib/libzmq.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 943 2012-06-13 10:12 /usr/local/lib/libzmq.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2012-06-13 10:12 /usr/local/lib/libzmq.so -> libzmq.so.3.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2012-06-13 10:12 /usr/local/lib/libzmq.so.3 -> libzmq.so.3.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2509876 2012-06-13 10:12 /usr/local/lib/libzmq.so.3.0.0
````

Move up a directory:

````
cd ..
````

Now build `zmq.jar`, which will contain the Java bindings, as well as other necessary support libraries.
You need to follow this procedure at least once on your computer so the necessary libraries are installed into /usr/local/lib.
Once you've done that, you can use `lib/zmq.jar`, also created by this procedure, in your other projects.

````
# Verify that JAVA_HOME environment variable is correctly set
echo $JAVA_HOME/bin/java
# Clone the github repository for the ZeroMQ Java bindings and build the project
git clone https://github.com/zeromq/jzmq.git
cd jzmq
./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install && echo ":: ALL OK ::"
ls -al /usr/local/lib/*jzmq* /usr/local/share/java/*zmq*
````

Output should look something like this; yes, you need all these files:

````
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 451282 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/lib/libjzmq.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 992 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/lib/libjzmq.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/lib/libjzmq.so -> libjzmq.so.0.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/lib/libjzmq.so.0 -> libjzmq.so.0.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 206959 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/lib/libjzmq.so.0.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21687 2012-04-10 09:29 /usr/local/share/java/zmq.jar
````

I put this into `.profile`, to use in scripts that kick off Java programs, so the Java bindings are found:

````
export JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib
````

## Mac
On Mac it is easy to build ZeroMQ from source:

````
brew install zeromq pkg-config
sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/aclocal/pkg.m4 /usr/share/aclocal/pkg.m4
````

Now build `zmq.jar`, which will contain the Java bindings, as well as other necessary support libraries.
You need to follow this procedure at least once on your computer so the necessary libraries are installed into `/usr/local/lib`.
Once you've done that, you can use `lib/zmq.jar`, also created by this procedure, in your other projects.

Install the Java Developer Package from Apple's ADC site: http://connect.apple.com/,
then navigate to __Downloads / Java__. Apple's docs say:
_The Java Developer package puts an additional copy of the Java SE 6 bundle in `/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/`.
This copy is installable without disturbing the existing system JDK._
FYI, I downloaded __Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8 Developer Package__, dated April 19, 2012.

Set `JAVA_HOME` to point to the new JDK; it is a good idea to put this in `.profile`.
Yes, you need to provide the enclosing `$()`.

````
export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home)
````

This next part is exactly the same as for building the Linux libraries; the resulting libraries are even installed into the same directories.

````
# Clone the github repository for the ZeroMQ Java bindings and build the project
git clone git://github.com/zeromq/jzmq.git
cd jzmq
./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install && echo ":: ALL OK ::"
sudo ls -alF /usr/local/lib/*jzmq* /usr/local/share/java/*zmq*
````

I put this into `.profile`, to use in scripts that kick off Java programs, so the Java bindings are found:

````
export JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib
````

## Windows
Building ZeroMQ and the Java bindings on Windows 7 64 bit requires the non-free version of Visual C++.
Here are instructions for building [ZeroMQ](http://www.zeromq.org/docs:windows-installations)
and [Java bindings](http://www.zeromq.org/bindings:java).

Alternatively, there are two prebuilt packages to download, but I could not get them to work.
I admit that I did not try very hard.

# Running the Akka ZeroMQ Demo
You will need to add an OS-specific definion to VM Options in your Run/Debug configuration.
For Linux and Mac, the magic incantation is: -Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib

If you prefer to launch from sbt, modify your sbt script so as to add a parameter called $JAVA_OPTS.
Here is my sbt script, which will work on any OS that supports bash:

````
#!/bin/bash
java -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled -XX:MaxPermSize=1536m -Xmx512M -Xss2M $JAVA_OPTS -jar `dirname $0`/sbt-launch.jar "$@"
````

To run each of the programs, first set java.library.path; this is an OS-specific setting.
The proper setting for Linux is -Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib.

Launch the programs in three console sessions. For Linux, do the following:

````
export JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib
sbt 'run-main com.micronautics.zeromq.benchmark.HealthPublisher'
````

````
export JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib
sbt 'run-main com.micronautics.zeromq.benchmark.HeapSubscriber'
````

````
export JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib
sbt 'run-main com.micronautics.zeromq.benchmark.LogSubscriber'
````

You could also hard-code the setting for java.library.path into sbt, which would mean that your sbt script would be OS-specific.
Here is a script with the proper setting for Linux:

````
#!/bin/bash
java -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled -XX:MaxPermSize=1536m -Xmx512M -Xss2M -Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib -jar `dirname $0`/sbt-launch.jar "$@"
````

HeapSubscriber won't generate output unless there is a problem, or the log level is increased to debug.
[src/main/resources/application.conf-](https://github.com/mslinn/zeromq-demo/blob/master/src/main/resources/application.conf-) has been provided to make this easy.
Simply rename that file and start the apps that you want to run with debug logging enabled, as follows:

If you want run the programs quietly, modify application.conf to contain loglevel = "ERROR".
You should do this when running a benchmark test.

The throughput computation is written so it does not average long term.
Instead, it reports the instantaneous throughput since the last report.
You should see results of changing loads right away, without lag.

WARNING: If you are testing on an AWS micro instance, be aware that they have only one CPU, plus a peculiar burst characteristic that will screw up measurements big time.
Instead, test with a medium or large instance.
